For a realistic UK planning baseline, PDSA puts a cat’s basic ongoing care at a minimum of £79 a month and initial setup at about £366, before you pay to acquire the cat. That is a floor, not a typical maximum: Cats Protection says ownership commonly exceeds £1,000 a year, while MoneyHelper’s broader estimate is about £1,500 a year. The sources use different methods, so treat them as planning reference points rather than figures to add together.
What the headline figures actually mean
Three respected UK organisations publish useful but non-identical estimates:

| Source | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| PDSA | At least £79 per month for ongoing care; approximately £366 for initial setup, excluding the cat’s acquisition cost | A minimum budget intended to meet a cat’s five welfare needs. It is not a ceiling and can rise with illness, special diets, uncovered treatment or a longer life. |
| Cats Protection | More than £1,000 a year is typical; insurance is approximately £25–£50 a month | An itemised guide showing how food, litter, routine healthcare, insurance and local prices affect the total. |
| MoneyHelper | About £1,500 a year (14 January 2025) | A broader average estimate rather than PDSA’s minimum baseline. |
These numbers cannot be reconciled into one exact national price. They describe different baskets of spending, and none is a live quote for a particular practice, insurer or household. Use the lowest figure only as a starting point, then replace guide prices with local quotes and your cat’s likely needs.
Initial setup: what you need before the cat arrives
PDSA’s setup estimate covers a bed; food and water bowls; a carrier; microchipping; initial vaccinations; neutering; a scratching post or cat tower; two litter trays; litter and scoops; toys; and a grooming brush or comb. Its total excludes the purchase or adoption fee. Buying these essentials before collection prevents the common mistake of treating the acquisition price as the whole startup cost.

Indicative equipment prices
| Item | Cats Protection guide range | Budget notes |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier | £25–£40 | Required for safe transport and vet visits. |
| Microchip | £20–£30 | Ask whether it is already included in an adoption package. |
| Scratching post | £30–£40 | A scratching surface is part of an appropriate home setup. |
| Toys | £40–£60 | Rotate toys rather than assuming every toy must be bought at once. |
| Litter tray | £10–£25 each | PDSA’s basket includes two trays for one cat. |
| Bowls | £10–£20 | Food and water bowls are listed separately from the carrier and bed. |
| Grooming brush | £10–£20 | Coat type determines how often it is used. |
| Cat flap | £40–£60, excluding installation | Optional and dependent on your home and outdoor-access decision. |
| Bed | £20–£40 | A secure sleeping place matters; the cat may still choose another safe spot. |
These are guide ranges accessed in October 2026, not guaranteed shop prices. Equipment may need replacement over time, especially litter trays, scratching surfaces, beds and toys. A cat that stays indoors may need more enrichment, while outdoor access can introduce other costs such as a cat flap and replacement identification details.

The fee alone does not tell you which option is cheaper. Compare what veterinary work and health information are included, then price anything missing.

| Route | Indicative acquisition cost | Potential additional costs |
|---|---|---|
| Adult adoption | About £80–£120 | Check whether neutering, microchipping, vaccinations, health assessment and insurance are included by that centre. |
| Kitten adoption | About £100–£120 | Confirm which vaccinations and future neutering arrangements remain your responsibility. |
| Non-pedigree purchase | About £80–£300 | You may need to pay separately for vaccinations, neutering, microchipping and the first vet consultation. |
| Pedigree purchase | About £800–£2,000 | Breed-related health risks, documentation and breeder standards can change your longer-term budget. |
Cats Protection says its stated adoption fee includes neutering, microchipping, vaccinations, an initial health check and four weeks of free insurance. Treat that as the guide’s arrangement, not a universal promise: ask the specific rehoming centre for a written list of inclusions, dates and any conditions. GOV.UK recommends considering a rescue animal from a reputable UK rehoming organisation and checking sellers carefully. If you buy, inspect the environment, meet the mother where appropriate, verify records and do not let a low headline price replace health checks.
Veterinary charges that may sit outside an acquisition fee
- Male neutering: £50–£100.
- Female neutering: £100–£300.
- Microchipping: £20–£30.
- First vet visit: £45–£60.
Cats Protection presents these as indicative guide figures. Your practice may charge more or less, and an adoption centre may already have paid some or all of them.

Monthly running costs
Food, litter, parasite control and insurance are the recurring categories most households can forecast. The following Cats Protection ranges show where a monthly budget can move; prescription diets, larger portions and premium policies can exceed them.
| Category | Indicative monthly range | What changes the bill |
|---|---|---|
| Food | £20–£50 | Diet type, calorie needs, brand, age and medical requirements. |
| Litter | £20–£30 | Tray count, litter type, depth, waste habits and how often trays are emptied. |
| Worming and flea treatment | £10–£20 | Product, treatment schedule, weight and veterinary advice. |
| Insurance | £25–£50 | Age, breed, location, cover level, excesses and pre-existing-condition exclusions. |
| Optional vet health club | £20–£40 | May bundle routine treatments and vaccines; do not count the same treatments again as separate expenses. |
PDSA’s £79 minimum monthly figure already allows for annual checks and booster vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, insurance, complete food, toys and litter. Adding every line from the Cats Protection table to that minimum would double-count some care. Instead, use PDSA as a floor and adjust individual categories when your actual food, litter, insurance or clinic plan differs.

Annual and occasional costs
Some bills arrive once or twice a year rather than monthly. Set aside a monthly amount so a renewal or appointment does not become a surprise.
Recommended Free Tools
| Expense | Indicative cost | Timing and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Routine vet check | £50–£80 | Annual guide range; local practice prices vary. |
| Vaccinations | £70–£90 | Annual guide range, depending on location and the vaccine schedule advised. |
| Pet sitting | £150–£300 | About one week; depends on location and arrangement. |
Equipment replacement, dental work, medication, illness and travel care are additional possibilities. The sources do not establish one national emergency-treatment price, so obtain an estimate from nearby practices and ask what out-of-hours arrangements apply. Insurance can reduce eligible treatment costs, but exclusions, waiting periods, limits and excesses determine what you actually pay.

How much does a cat cost over its lifetime?
PDSA estimates minimum lifetime care at £11,400–£13,600. It derives that range by combining setup and monthly ongoing costs with an average life expectancy of 11.7–14 years. This is a minimum-care projection, not a promise that every cat will fit inside the range. A longer life, chronic condition, specialist food, repeated treatment, policy exclusions or replacement equipment can push the total higher.
The practical implication is to judge affordability over years, not just the adoption weekend. A household that can cover the first carrier and bowls but cannot absorb recurring insurance, food and litter has not yet reached a safe budget.
Building a personal UK cat budget
- Choose the acquisition route. Write down the fee and request an itemised list of included vaccinations, neutering, microchipping, health checks and insurance.
- Price the one-off basket. Check local prices for the carrier, trays, litter, bowls, bed, scratching equipment, grooming tools and toys. Include installation if you need a cat flap.
- Set a monthly floor. Start with PDSA’s minimum baseline, then replace its assumed food, litter and insurance amounts with your own quotes.
- Add annual sinking funds. Divide expected vaccination, health-check and holiday-care bills across the months so the cash is available when due.
- Read insurance exclusions before comparing premiums. A cheaper policy may have lower limits, higher excesses or exclusions for pre-existing and breed-related conditions.
- Ask two local veterinary practices for prices. Request routine consultation, vaccination, neutering, microchipping and out-of-hours information; the published guides cannot provide a universal emergency figure.
- Stress-test the plan. Consider a special diet, ongoing medication, replacement equipment, a move, a period without insurance or a longer-than-average lifespan.
Two or more cats
Multiple cats need more than a larger food bill. PDSA advises providing at least one of each listed resource per cat, plus one extra. That affects litter trays, resting places, feeding and water stations, scratching resources and enrichment. Confirm that your home has enough separated resources before adopting a second cat; otherwise stress-related behaviour and additional veterinary costs can undermine the apparent savings of sharing one household.

- Compare the total value of an adoption package, not just its fee, because included veterinary work can materially change the first-year total.
- Measure food portions and buy only the quantity you can store safely; changing diet for medical reasons should follow veterinary advice.
- Keep parasite prevention and vaccination records so you do not pay for duplicate treatments or miss scheduled care.
- Compare insurance policy limits and exclusions annually, not only the monthly premium.
- Replace worn scratching and litter equipment before it becomes unsafe, while avoiding unnecessary upgrades.
- Plan holiday care early; Cats Protection’s one-week sitting range varies by location and provider.
PDSA summarises the boundary of a minimum budget clearly: “The costs above are the basic minimum required to meet a cat’s 5 Welfare Needs and you could spend much more throughout a cat’s lifetime, especially if they have expensive tastes or need ongoing vet care that isn’t covered by your pet insurance.” Treat that warning as a planning rule: the responsible budget is the one that still works when your cat’s needs change.
