Rightvet’s 2026 dataset of published practice prices puts the median at £130, with 5th–95th percentile prices of £78–£329 across 605 practices. Tests, medicines, treatment and hospitalisation can add to the bill. If your pet may be having an emergency, call the emergency provider and follow its instructions; cost discussions should not delay first aid or pain relief.
What does an out-of-hours emergency vet consultation cost?
Rightvet reports a £130 median published OOH consultation fee for 2026. Its dataset covers 605 UK practices with fixed prices published online and gives a 5th–95th percentile range of £78–£329. These are consultation prices, not complete emergency-visit bills. Rightvet notes that only a minority of practices publish an OOH consultation price online, so this sample may not represent the national price distribution. Rightvet’s price data.
For context, Rightvet’s 2026 median published routine consultation fee is £59, £71 below its OOH median. The Competition and Markets Authority reported an average consultation item value of £52 in a 2024 insurance-provider dataset; that figure is not identified as an OOH fee. These figures come from different datasets and should not be treated as interchangeable or as a forecast of your bill.
Why can the total bill be higher?
The consultation is only the initial charge. Depending on your pet’s condition, the provider may recommend diagnostic tests, medication, treatment, procedures or inpatient care. No source establishes one reliable national total for a complete OOH emergency episode.

Practices set their own fees; the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) does not set veterinary prices. Charges and arrangements can vary with the provider, location, facilities and hours. Your usual practice may provide its own emergency service or refer you to a separate clinic, so confirm who is responsible for your practice’s OOH care and ask that provider for its current consultation fee and what it includes. RCVS guidance on fees and pricing.
What to ask about costs and estimates
Ask what the initial consultation covers and, when practical, request an itemised estimate before further work begins. The RCVS says: “For all non-emergency treatments, your vet should provide a written estimate before starting work.” In an emergency, costs should be discussed as soon as practically possible; if the likely final cost becomes substantially higher than the estimate, the practice should seek your consent. Useful questions include what the vet recommends next, what each option is likely to cost, which charges are additional, and when the team will check with you before proceeding beyond the estimate. An emergency may require care to start before a full written estimate is practical.
How to prepare for an out-of-hours visit
- Save the right contact details. Ask your regular practice which provider handles its OOH service, how to contact it and where it is. Keep the number and address accessible. Every UK veterinary practice must ensure access to 24-hour emergency first aid and pain relief, but the provider and arrangements vary. RCVS guidance on emergency and out-of-hours care.
- Plan how you will get there. Owners are usually responsible for taking their animal to the emergency provider. Smaller animals generally need to travel to a practice or clinic; home visits are usually more practical for larger animals and may be available for smaller pets only in exceptional circumstances.
- Keep key details handy. Have your pet’s microchip and insurance information available. If you are away from home, the emergency service may need details of your pet’s history. Take recent records if readily available, but do not delay urgent care to find them.
- Call ahead if time allows. Confirm where to go, the current consultation fee, what it covers and whether payment is expected at the time of treatment. Do not delay urgent care to compare prices.
- Check insurance and payment arrangements. Review your policy’s vet-fee limits, excess, exclusions, pre-existing-condition rules and other applicable restrictions; contact the insurer to verify cover for the proposed treatment. Ask whether the practice can submit a direct claim. Arrangements vary, and a veterinary surgeon can invoice the insurer only when authorised by the policyholder. Ask the practice what payment options it actually offers: some may provide plans or financing, but they are not guaranteed, and practices are not obliged to offer a payment plan. RCVS fees and pricing guidance.
Does an emergency vet have to be paid upfront?
There is no single UK payment-upfront rule established by the available guidance. Ask the emergency provider about its payment arrangements when you call, if time allows. Insurance cover and direct-claim options depend on your policy and the practice’s arrangements; neither should be assumed to cover every emergency or remove the need to discuss payment.
