That time should include more than leash walking: combine movement with play, training, or another activity that gives this energetic working breed something to do. The range is guidance, not a universal prescription; age, health, fitness, and the individual dog all matter.
Why does a Catahoula need more than a quick walk?
Catahoulas were developed as multipurpose working dogs. The American Kennel Club describes the breed as agile and enduring, and its breed-care guidance says a Catahoula needs space to expend energy and a job to do. A short walk may provide movement and time outdoors, but a plan built around walks alone can leave out the play, learning, and purposeful activity these sources recommend.

That does not mean every Catahoula must run for hours or participate in a sport. It means that daily exercise is best treated as a mix of physical activity and engagement, adjusted to the dog’s condition. A training session, a game of fetch, or a suitable dog sport can give the dog a task as well as an outlet for energy.
How much exercise does a Catahoula Leopard Dog need?
For a healthy adult that is not working, PetMD recommends at least one or two hours of exercise every day and explicitly says the exercise should not be limited to walking. The recommendation appears in Teresa Kho-Pelfrey, DVM’s Catahoula Leopard Dog Health and Care, published March 13, 2023. It is a care recommendation, not the result of a controlled study, and it does not establish an exact daily requirement for every dog.

Use the range as a starting guide for planning a varied day, not as a target to force on a dog regardless of circumstances. The sources do not establish a precise universal number of minutes for all Catahoulas. A dog’s age, health, energy, and individual condition affect what is suitable, so the right amount and intensity may differ from one dog to another.
The qualification “not working” matters. The one-to-two-hour figure is specifically given for a Catahoula without a working outlet; the cited guidance does not provide a separate numerical quota for dogs doing regular work. A working dog’s activity still needs to be appropriate for its condition, and any major change in workload is best discussed with a veterinarian.
Which activities can make up the daily total?
Options named by the AKC and PetMD include several walks, backyard play, retrieving a ball or flying disc, running, hiking, swimming, obedience, agility, rally, and other dog sports. You do not have to use every activity; choose a practical combination that fits your dog’s age, ability, and setting.

| Activity | What it contributes | Planning consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Walks | Steady movement and an outdoor outing; the AKC suggests several walks a day. | Useful as part of the routine, but PetMD says not to rely on walking alone. |
| Fetch and backyard play | Active play and retrieving; the AKC mentions balls and flying discs. | A yard offers room to play, but the cited sources do not say yard access by itself meets a dog’s needs. |
| Running, hiking, or swimming | More active ways to move, all listed as breed-relevant options by PetMD. | Match the activity and its intensity to the dog’s fitness, health, and ability. |
| Obedience, agility, rally, or other dog sports | Movement or practice paired with a task; these give the dog an outlet beyond a routine walk. | Choose an option appropriate to the dog rather than assuming a sport is necessary. |
| Short training or problem-solving sessions | Mental engagement alongside physical activity. | Keep sessions manageable and use them to add variety rather than to replace all movement. |
These activities are choices, not a ranking of what is best. An easy walk differs from running, hiking, or energetic fetch in physical intensity; training and sports add a task that a movement-only outing may not provide. A useful plan considers both dimensions instead of assuming that the hardest physical activity is always the right one.
How can you organize a practical day?
Think in components rather than trying to complete the entire daily activity in one outing. For example, a day might include walks, a period of supervised play or fetch, and a short training or scent-and-problem-solving session. Running, hiking, swimming, or a dog sport can be substituted when appropriate. This is an illustrative way to combine the activities named by the sources, not a tested schedule or veterinary prescription.

- Plan movement. Include walks and, where appropriate for the dog, another active option such as retrieving, running, hiking, or swimming.
- Add a task. Use brief obedience practice, agility, rally, or another suitable training activity to provide engagement as well as movement.
- Vary the mix. Rotate among appropriate activities rather than expecting one form of exercise to cover every need each day.
- Adjust to the dog. Consider age, health, and condition when choosing how demanding an activity should be, and ask a veterinarian for individualized guidance when those factors raise questions.
The example does not assign a fixed duration to each component because the cited sources do not provide one. The one-to-two-hour adult recommendation should not be divided into invented quotas for walks, play, or training.
How do the activity choices compare?
When deciding how to exercise a Catahoula, compare options on four practical axes. First is physical intensity and duration: an easy walk is not equivalent to a run, hike, or energetic game of fetch. Second is mental engagement: obedience, agility, rally, scent work, and other training give the dog a task that movement alone may not provide. Third is age and physical ability: a puppy may need brief, repeated sessions, while a senior or dog with a health concern may need gentler activity. Fourth is setting and supervision: a fenced area can support play, but an off-leash activity is not automatically safe in every location.

This comparison helps you build variety without treating one activity as universally superior. A Catahoula might receive steady movement on walks, bursts of activity through retrieving, and focused engagement through training. On another day, an appropriate hike or swim could replace one of those elements. The right combination depends on the individual dog and the conditions in which the activity occurs.
Does a fenced yard count as enough exercise?
A yard can provide space for supervised play, and the AKC lists backyard play among suitable outlets. But the sources do not say that simply having yard access fulfills a Catahoula’s exercise needs. The AKC also describes several walks a day and other outdoor activities, while PetMD emphasizes exercise, training, and active engagement.
Use the yard as a setting for an activity, not as a substitute for planning one. If you play fetch there, for example, it is the play that creates the activity; access to the space alone does not tell you how much the dog has moved or engaged. Supervision also matters, particularly when retrieving toys or when the area is not securely fenced.

Do you need special equipment or classes?
No equipment is identified as mandatory. A fetch ball or floating fetch toy is a modest optional aid because retrieving and floating toys are among the listed activities, but fetch equipment does not replace a varied routine and fetch alone should not be presented as sufficient for every day.
Obedience, agility, and rally classes are also reasonable options because those activities are specifically named for Catahoulas. Availability, pricing, and suitability differ by location and dog, so choose a class only after considering the dog’s age, physical ability, and veterinary advice. The activity itself matters more than buying a particular product or enrolling in a particular program.
How should exercise change for a puppy?
Do not turn the adult one-to-two-hour recommendation into a puppy quota. The AKC’s general exercise guidance recommends several short walks or play sessions through the day for puppies, rather than one long outing. It also advises checking with a veterinarian or breeder about what is suitable for the individual puppy.
Keep activity fun and avoid pushing a growing dog into burnout. Catahoulas may appear adult-like early, but the AKC says they are not fully mature until two years old. That maturity guidance is a reason to be thoughtful about a young dog’s plan, not a separate exercise-duration rule. If you are unsure whether a particular activity or amount is appropriate, seek individualized advice rather than relying on the adult range.
What about senior dogs or Catahoulas with health concerns?
Exercise may need to be adapted for a dog with a medical condition, discomfort, or age-related limitations. The AKC advises seeking veterinary guidance for dogs with health conditions and for seniors; it gives changing a senior dog’s run to a walk as an example of an adjustment. The aim is not to apply the adult starting range regardless of ability, but to settle on appropriate activity with professional advice.

PetMD notes that exercise habits can affect hip dysplasia, but the cited material does not supply a universal exercise plan for a dog with that condition. If your dog has a diagnosis or appears uncomfortable during activity, ask your veterinarian what kinds of movement and intensity are suitable. Do not treat the breed-wide adult recommendation as a treatment plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you tell whether your plan needs adjusting?
The cited sources do not provide a numeric test, a precise schedule, or a universal checklist for deciding when a Catahoula has had enough exercise. They do establish that needs vary with age, health, and individual condition, and that veterinary guidance is appropriate when health or senior limitations are involved. Use those factors to review the plan rather than treating the one-to-two-hour range as a pass-or-fail measurement.
- If the dog is a puppy, replace an adult-style long outing with multiple short sessions and ask a veterinarian or breeder about appropriate activity.
- If the dog is older or has a health condition, ask a veterinarian how to adapt the activity and intensity.
- If the routine consists only of walks, consider adding a suitable play or training activity from the options above.
- If you are considering off-leash play, assess the setting and supervision. The AKC’s mention of a preferably fenced backyard is not a claim that off-leash activity is safe in every location.
What is established—and what is not?
The strongest breed-specific number in the cited sources is PetMD’s one-to-two-hour daily exercise recommendation for a Catahoula that is not working. The AKC’s breed page calls for ample activity and attention but does not prescribe a universal number of minutes. The AKC’s separate guidance supplies general age and health considerations, including short sessions for puppies and adjustments for seniors.
No published statistic or study establishing a precise universal exercise requirement is identified in these sources. Accordingly, the adult range is most useful as a practical starting point, while a dog’s life stage, health, and actual ability guide how to apply it. For an individualized plan, especially for a puppy, senior, or dog with a medical concern, consult a veterinarian.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is one hour of exercise enough for a Catahoula Leopard Dog?
For a healthy adult that is not working, PetMD gives at least one to two hours daily as a starting recommendation. One hour may be the lower end, but the appropriate amount depends on age, health, fitness, and the individual dog, and the time should include more than walking.

How do you exercise a Catahoula Leopard Dog?
Combine several walks with supervised play or fetch, and add a task such as obedience, agility, rally, scent work, or another suitable dog sport. Running, hiking, and swimming are also listed options. Rotate activities to provide both movement and engagement.
Is walking alone enough for a Catahoula?
PetMD specifically says the recommended exercise should not be limited to walking. Walks can form part of the routine, but play, training, retrieving, or another appropriate activity can add the purposeful outlet the breed’s working background calls for.
How much exercise does a Catahoula puppy need?
Do not apply the adult one-to-two-hour figure as a puppy quota. The AKC recommends several short walks or play sessions throughout the day and suggests asking a veterinarian or breeder about an individual puppy’s needs.
Can a senior Catahoula keep running?
Possibly, but activity may need to be gentler or changed. The AKC gives changing a senior dog’s run to a walk as an example and advises veterinary guidance for seniors and dogs with health conditions.
Is a backyard enough exercise for a Catahoula?
A yard provides space for supervised play, but yard access alone is not identified as sufficient. Use it for an activity such as fetch and continue to plan walks, training, or other suitable engagement.
The Bottom Line
Plan on roughly one to two hours of varied daily exercise for a healthy adult Catahoula Leopard Dog that is not working, using walks plus play, training, retrieving, hiking, running, swimming, or suitable dog sports. Treat that figure as a starting point—not a rigid quota—and shorten, adapt, or seek veterinary guidance for puppies, seniors, and dogs with health concerns.
