There is no single daily can count that suits every Labrador. Royal Canin’s adult Labrador Retriever wet-food guide varies the portion by the dog’s weight and activity level, and its detailed wet-only chart is published for Canada. For example, a 30 kg (66 lb) dog is listed at 3 3/4 to 5 cans per day, depending on activity. Use the current directions on the can sold in your country; treat the chart below as a starting guide, not an individual prescription.

Which food and feeding chart does this guidance cover?

This is guidance for Royal Canin Labrador Retriever Adult Loaf in Sauce, a canned food for adult dogs—not a general recommendation for every wet food or every Labrador. Royal Canin’s U.S. product listing identifies the food for Labrador Retrievers over 15 months old and shows a pack of 12 cans, each 3 oz. Do not apply the adult chart to a puppy, or assume that the package, formula, or feeding directions are identical in every country.

The detailed wet-only and mixed-feeding quantities below come from Royal Canin Canada’s product page. The U.S. product page confirms the product and package size, but the wet-feeding chart cited here is Canadian. Check the label on your local can and current local product guidance before using these amounts. Regional packaging and instructions can differ, so a Canadian table should not silently be treated as a U.S. package direction.

Royal Canin Canada lists 299 kcal of metabolizable energy (ME) per can on an as-fed, calculated basis, and says the food is formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance. The calorie figure describes this product; it is not a daily calorie target for all Labradors. A dog’s appropriate intake depends on more than the calories printed on one can, including weight, activity, environment, body condition, other food and health status.

How many cans per day does the wet-only chart list?

Find your dog’s current weight, then use the activity column that best matches the categories on Royal Canin’s current local chart. Each cell gives the listed daily amount in cans and grams. These are manufacturer guide amounts, not a custom ration for an individual dog.

Dog weight Low activity Medium activity High activity
22 kg (49 lb) 3 cans (1,145 g) 3 1/2 cans (1,326 g) 4 cans (1,506 g)
26 kg (57 lb) 3 1/4 cans (1,298 g) 4 cans (1,502 g) 4 1/2 cans (1,707 g)
30 kg (66 lb) 3 3/4 cans (1,445 g) 4 1/4 cans (1,673 g) 5 cans (1,901 g)
34 kg (75 lb) 4 cans (1,587 g) 4 3/4 cans (1,837 g) 5 1/2 cans (2,088 g)
38 kg (84 lb) 4 1/2 cans (1,725 g) 5 1/4 cans (1,997 g) 6 cans (2,269 g)

For example, a 30 kg (66 lb) adult Labrador is listed at 3 3/4 cans daily if classed as low activity, 4 1/4 cans at medium activity, or 5 cans at high activity. At 38 kg, the listed range is 4 1/2 cans at low activity to 6 cans at high activity. At 22 kg, it is 3 to 4 cans. Those comparisons show why neither weight alone nor a remembered portion is enough.

The gram values are the corresponding daily food weights, not extra food to add to the can count. Fractions such as 3 1/4 or 4 3/4 cans describe the total for a day. If you divide the ration into meals, divide that daily total rather than feeding the full amount at every meal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rows are charted weights, not a complete amount for every possible weight. If your dog falls between rows, do not treat an unlisted value as an exact instruction; consult the current label or veterinarian for an appropriate amount. Likewise, do not assume the amount should be adjusted in a fixed ratio for a dog whose weight is outside the listed range.

How should you interpret the activity categories?

The table uses Royal Canin’s low-, medium- and high-activity categories. The manufacturer’s descriptions on the current package or product page should determine which column applies. Do not invent your own definition from a single walk, and do not automatically choose the high column simply because a Labrador is energetic. Activity and environment can alter optimal quantities, so the category should reflect the dog’s usual circumstances.

If you are uncertain which column fits, record the dog’s current weight, routine activity and environment and ask your veterinarian. Choosing a column to force weight gain or loss can obscure the real issue; body condition and health should guide an adjustment rather than a guess.

How to use the chart for your dog

  1. Confirm the life stage and product. Make sure the can is the adult Labrador Retriever Loaf in Sauce formula, and that the dog meets the adult age stated on the U.S. listing: over 15 months. A puppy or a different formula needs its own feeding guidance.
  2. Use the dog’s current weight. Choose the closest applicable weight row in the current local guide. The chart is organized by body weight, so a remembered or estimated weight can lead to selecting the wrong row.
  3. Select the listed activity category. Use the manufacturer’s descriptions on the package or product page. The amounts for the same weight can differ substantially across categories.
  4. Check whether the plan is wet-only or mixed. The wet-only table is for feeding the listed daily amount of canned food. If you also feed the matching dry food, use the separate mixed-feeding guidance instead of adding a full dry ration to the wet-only amount.
  5. Measure the full daily amount. The chart provides grams as well as cans. Royal Canin’s U.S. dry-food guide says grams are the most accurate measurement; use a kitchen scale for the dry portion when following a mixed plan, and consult the local package for the appropriate directions for the wet portion.
  6. Recheck the plan when circumstances change. A change in weight, activity, environment, treats, other food or health status can make the original starting amount unsuitable. Recheck the local label and seek veterinary input rather than making a large, unmeasured change.

Royal Canin’s U.S. dry-food guide also says optimal quantities vary with activity and environment, recommends dividing the daily ration into two to four equal portions, and advises consulting a veterinarian about health questions. That portioning advice is from the matching dry-food guide; follow the wet product’s current label for any product-specific instructions. For a wet-only plan, the important point is still to measure the complete daily amount and divide it consistently if you feed more than once.

What changes when you mix wet and dry food?

A mixed plan is not the wet-only amount plus a full dry-food amount. The manufacturer’s mixed-feeding chart pairs one can with a reduced quantity of the matching Labrador Retriever Adult dry food. For a 30 kg (66 lb) dog, Royal Canin Canada lists:

Activity category Wet food per day Matching dry food per day
Low 1 can 3 6/8 cups (244 g)
Medium 1 can 4 4/8 cups (297 g)
High 1 can 5 2/8 cups (349 g)

Those are the chart’s quantities for that weight and activity category, not a universal mixed ratio for every Labrador. For a different weight, use the corresponding row in the current mixed-feeding table. Do not take the 30 kg example and scale it yourself as though the source established a formula for all dogs.

The mixed table’s one-can example also demonstrates the basic principle: replacing part of the dry ration with wet food requires a reduction in dry food. It does not mean every dog should receive exactly one can, nor does it authorize adding one can to a dry-only plan. Use the row for the dog’s weight and activity and verify that both products are the matching formulas.

Why the chart may not be the right individual amount

A manufacturer’s guide is a practical starting point, but it cannot account for every dog’s needs. Royal Canin’s U.S. dry-food guidance explicitly notes that optimal amounts vary with activity and environment. The dog’s age, ideal body condition, current weight, other foods, and health status can also matter when deciding on an individual plan.

  • Body condition or weight concerns: Ask your veterinarian to help set or adjust the ration rather than choosing a different activity column simply to alter the amount.
  • Health questions: Seek veterinary advice, as Royal Canin’s U.S. guidance recommends for health concerns. A product chart is not a substitute for individualized veterinary advice.
  • Uncertainty about the local product: Read the can and local product page, particularly if the package size or wording differs from the Canadian chart shown here.
  • Difficulty measuring: Use the gram values where available and weigh the portion rather than relying on a visual estimate. For a mixed plan, weighing the dry portion is more accurate than measuring by approximate cups.
  • Multiple foods: Tell the veterinarian about every food, topper, treat or other edible item. The chart is for the named food plan, not an automatic allowance for unlisted extras.

Common feeding mistakes to avoid

  • Using a dry-only amount for wet food. The matching dry food has its own dry-only guide; it is not the wet-only chart.
  • Combining two full rations. A wet-only amount and a dry-only amount are separate plans. For mixed feeding, select the mixed chart’s paired quantities.
  • Assuming the Canadian amounts are a U.S. package instruction. The detailed wet chart cited here is Canadian; verify the label and guidance for the product sold locally.
  • Applying adult guidance to a puppy. The U.S. listing identifies this adult food for dogs over 15 months old; use age-appropriate guidance for younger dogs.
  • Treating a chart entry as a veterinary prescription. The amounts are manufacturer guidance and do not establish an ideal portion for an individual dog with specific body-condition or health needs.
  • Scaling a row by guesswork. A dog between listed weights or outside the table should not be assigned a homemade linear adjustment without checking the current guidance.
  • Measuring by eye. Cans and fractional portions can be easy to over- or under-estimate. Use the listed gram amount where possible and keep the daily total consistent.
  • Ignoring a changed routine. A new activity level or environment can change the appropriate amount; reassess rather than continuing an outdated ration indefinitely.
