If a forest fire or heavy smoke threatens your home near orangutan habitat, follow local evacuation instructions first. Shelter indoors only while authorities say it is safe to stay. If you see an orangutan, keep your distance and report it to Indonesia’s BKSDA or local forestry officers; do not try to rescue, feed, capture, or treat the animal yourself.
What should you do first when a fire is near?
Use current instructions from local authorities to decide whether to leave, where to go, and when it is safe to return. General advice about closing windows or staying indoors applies only if officials have not told you to evacuate. Do not delay leaving because the smoke seems manageable or because a fire is not yet visible from your home.

The sources cited here concern Indonesia, particularly Kalimantan, with the broader fire context also including Sumatra. They do not establish a live fire status, evacuation route, local emergency number, or safe destination for any individual reader. Check current local government alerts and instructions from local emergency and health services. Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry posts national fire-control information at Pengendalian Karhutla Kemenhut; use local authorities for immediate directions in your area.
If authorities order an evacuation
- Leave when instructed and use the route or destination designated by local officials.
- Follow official advice about road conditions and whether a route is safe; do not enter a fire area to reach a home, workplace, or animal.
- Wait for an official return instruction before going back. A fire’s visible edge does not tell you whether an area is safe.
If authorities say it is safe to stay
Reduce smoke entering your home and limit time outdoors. Keep doors and windows shut, reduce outside-air intake where you can, and use a suitable air cleaner or filter if one is available. Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, especially when smoke is heavy. These are smoke-exposure measures, not protection from flames or a reason to remain in a place officials have told you to leave. CDC/NIOSH says that, unless evacuation becomes necessary, staying indoors is the best way to protect yourself during wildfire-smoke episodes; the agency’s advice is available at How to Protect Workers and the Public from Wildfire Smoke. The World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe’s wildfire health advice also recommends limiting exposure and using a well-fitting mask when going outside is necessary.

- 3M ADVANCED ELECTROSTATIC MEDIA enhances the capture of airborne particles and allows for easy breathing
- 3M COOL FLOW VALVE helps release warm, exhaled breath from inside the respirator
- UP TO 50% EASIER BREATHING Compared to 3M 8200
How can you reduce smoke exposure?
Smoke can travel beyond the immediate fire zone, so distance from visible flames alone does not tell you whether the air is clear. Follow local health advice and adjust your activity to current conditions. If you are sheltering indoors and it is safe to do so, keep openings closed and reduce the amount of outside air entering the home where possible. Run a suitable air cleaner or filter if you have one, and avoid optional trips outdoors until conditions improve or authorities advise otherwise.
If you must go outdoors
Use a properly fitted respirator intended to reduce particle exposure. CDC/NIOSH identifies NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirators in its U.S. guidance; WHO advises a well-fitting FFP2 or N95 mask. These are not interchangeable claims about local approval or availability in Indonesia: check applicable local product requirements and whether the respirator fits you properly. A loose-fitting mask may not provide the intended particle reduction.
Rank #2
- NIOSH-APPROVED: Organic Vapor/P100 combination cartridge helps reduce expose to certain organic vapors and provides at least 99.97% filtration efficiency against solids, liquid aerosols, and oil-based particulate
- OIL-PROOF FILTERS: Included P100 particulate filters are oil-proof (Use according to manufacturer’s time use restrictions when oil aerosols are present)
- USE FOR: Relief from certain non-harmful particles and annoying odors
- KIT INCLUDES: One facepiece and one pair of replaceable organic vapor/P100 combination cartridges (#60921)
- 3M BAYONET CONNECTION: Makes it compatible with a wide range of 3M cartridges and filters
A respirator does not protect you from an advancing fire, make a fire zone safe to enter, or replace evacuation instructions. Do not use one as a reason to continue outdoor work or travel when local authorities advise against it. CDC/NIOSH’s certification references are U.S.-specific, so do not assume that U.S. approval or a U.S. alert service applies locally.

Follow guidance from local health services, particularly if you or someone with you has a health condition that may be affected by smoke. If a person develops concerning symptoms or needs medical help, contact local health services or emergency responders rather than trying to assess fire safety yourself. The general advice in international public-health guidance cannot determine whether a particular home, road, or person is safe in a specific Indonesian fire event.

What should you do if you see an orangutan near your home?
Keep back, do not disturb or feed the animal, and report the sighting to BKSDA or local forestry officers. Do not approach it for a closer look, attempt to guide it away from danger, or try to capture, transport, or provide veterinary care. A wild orangutan may be stressed or injured, and an untrained intervention can put both the animal and people at risk.
- Move away without approaching or crowding the animal. Keep other people from gathering close to it.
- Do not offer food, touch it, or attempt to move it. Do not enter a fire-affected area to reach it.
- Contact BKSDA or local forestry officers and report what you observed. Use the current contact route provided by local authorities; no single location-specific number is established here.
- Give officials the location and what you saw, such as whether the orangutan appeared weak or injured and whether fire or smoke was nearby. Share only information you can observe safely, without getting closer to collect it.
- Follow officials’ instructions and leave the area if emergency authorities direct you to evacuate.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry has specifically asked residents to avoid handling wildlife themselves and to report sightings. In a 30 August 2026 report about an orangutan found weak in a fire-affected area in Ketapang, Murlan Dameria Pane, Head of BKSDA West Kalimantan, said fire can affect not only land cover but also wildlife nearby, and emphasized the importance of monitoring animal movement and public reports. The ministry’s account is at Kemenhut Evakuasi Orangutan dalam Kondisi Lemah dari Lokasi Terdampak Kebakaran di Ketapang.

Why can wildlife be at risk even beyond the flames?
Fire impacts are not limited to the ground directly reached by flames. Smoke can extend beyond a fire zone, while damage to habitat can affect food availability and habitat quality. Changes in water conditions can also matter: receding rivers may become less effective barriers around sites where orangutans are monitored or cared for. These are reasons to report an animal sighting rather than assume it is safe because the fire is not immediately beside it.
In a September 2026 update, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation reported that about 49.5 hectares of the Mawas conservation area had been affected by fire. The same update said 11 orangutans were safely evacuated from pre-release islands after river levels fell and the rivers became less effective as barriers. These are conditions reported by the organization at that time, not a live status update or evidence that a particular site remains safe now. Drying peatland and receding rivers are additional conservation concerns identified in the regional fire context. They do not tell a resident what is happening at a specific location; current local authorities and conservation officers are the appropriate sources for that information.

Two reported burned-area estimates illustrate why the reporting source and period need to stay attached to each number. They are not directly interchangeable: one is Indonesian government data for January through July, while the other is an independent estimate through the end of August.
| Reported figure | Source and period | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| More than 202,000 hectares burned | Indonesian government data, January–July 2026, as reported by the Associated Press | A government-data figure for the stated period; it is not the same measure or period as the estimate alongside it. |
| Nearly 896,000 hectares burned | Independent Nusantara Atlas estimate, through the end of August 2026, as reported by the Associated Press | An independent estimate with a later end date; do not combine it with or present it as interchangeable with the government figure. |
The Associated Press published these separately attributed estimates on 10 October 2026 in its report on fires threatening Indonesia’s orangutans and rescuers finding injured animals: Wildfires threaten Indonesia’s orangutans as rescuers find injured animals. Neither estimate gives the current fire conditions at your home.

Preparation should make it easier to act on local instructions, not substitute for them. Identify how you will receive official alerts and which local government or emergency service provides evacuation and return guidance. Know how you will contact local health services and the BKSDA or forestry office responsible for your area. Because the sources do not establish one emergency number or route that applies across orangutan habitat, verify the contacts locally rather than relying on a number or service from another country.
Quick Recap
- Decide how household members will receive and share local alerts if they are apart.
- Know the official source for evacuation routes, safe destinations, and return instructions in your area.
- If you keep a suitable air cleaner or filter, know how to use it; do not assume an unspecified device is appropriate for every home.
- Keep the contact route for local BKSDA or forestry officers available so an orangutan sighting can be reported without approaching the animal.
- When conditions change, check current official information rather than treating an older conservation-site update as a live safety assessment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting to evacuate while trying indoor smoke measures: sheltering steps apply only while it is safe to stay and officials have not ordered evacuation.
- Assuming no visible flames means no smoke risk: smoke may travel outside the fire zone.
- Treating a respirator as fire protection: it may reduce particle exposure when properly fitted, but it does not make an advancing fire or fire area safe.
- Approaching an orangutan to help: report the animal to BKSDA or forestry officials instead of feeding, handling, or attempting a rescue.
- Using an old update as a current all-clear: fire conditions and water barriers can change, and dated reports do not establish present safety.
