A healthy cat needs roughly 44–66 mL of total water per kilogram of body weight each day as a general estimate. VCA Animal Hospitals offers a simpler household baseline: about 4 ounces per 5 pounds of body weight—around 8 ounces for a 10-pound cat. Neither figure is a bowl-drinking quota: water in food counts, and needs vary. Keep fresh water available at all times.
How much water does a cat need per day?
The Merck Veterinary Manual gives a general estimate of 44–66 mL per kilogram of body weight per day for most mammals in a thermoneutral environment. This is a broad reference range, not an individualized prescription for every cat. VCA Animal Hospitals gives a cat-specific rule of thumb of 4 ounces per 5 pounds of body weight daily.

For a 10-pound (about 4.5 kg) cat, the Merck range works out to roughly 200–300 mL (6.8–10.1 US fluid ounces) of total water per day. That is a conversion of Merck’s general estimate, not a separate cat-specific recommendation. VCA’s rule of thumb comes to about 8 ounces for the same weight. These are useful ballparks, not exact targets to enforce.
Does a cat need to drink that much from the bowl?
No. The estimates refer to total water needs, and moisture in food contributes. A cat eating wet food may drink less from its bowl than a cat eating dry food while still taking in water through meals.

Moisture content varies by food. Merck reports canned foods at 60% to more than 87% moisture and dry foods at 3%–11%. Cornell Feline Health Center describes wet cat food as typically about 70%–80% water. Because of that difference, bowl intake alone does not show how much water a cat gets overall.
What changes a cat’s water needs?
There is no single amount that fits every cat. Merck identifies diet, environment, activity level, and health status as factors; VCA also names ambient temperature and body weight. These variables affect how much water a cat needs and how much it gets from food.

Use a daily estimate as context rather than a strict bowl quota. Do not restrict access to water to make a cat match a calculation.
How can you encourage a cat to take in more water?
- Keep fresh, clean water available. Merck recommends providing multiple water sources.
- Try different bowl locations. VCA suggests offering bowls in several places and cleaning them daily.
- Consider a fountain if your cat likes moving water. Some cats prefer it, but a fountain is optional and is not guaranteed to increase every cat’s intake.
- Offer moisture through food. Wet food contributes water. You can also try gradually adding a small amount of water to food; if your cat refuses moistened food, VCA advises offering its regular food rather than letting it go without food.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian if your cat begins drinking and urinating noticeably more than usual. A change in both can signal a health problem, but thirst alone cannot identify the cause.

For example, Cornell explains that chronic kidney disease can reduce a cat’s ability to concentrate urine, which may lead to increased urination and drinking. A veterinarian can assess the change and determine what may be causing it.
