Nero was eight weeks old when he arrived at the ASPCA Kitten Nursery with a pronounced side-to-side head movement. A chance glimpse through an ASPCA Mobile Adoptions Vehicle led Ray Li back for a closer meeting, an adoption, and a new name: Bubble.
The ASPCA account, published September 19, 2018, follows one kitten from stray intake and uncertain medical concerns to a home with Li and an older cat named Wawa. It is a story about a specific animal and household, not a promise that every kitten with similar symptoms will have the same outcome.

How Nero’s story began
A resident who had found Nero as a stray relinquished him to Brooklyn Animal Care Centers of NYC. On July 11, the organization transported him to the ASPCA Kitten Nursery, where staff cared for the eight-week-old kitten and evaluated his health.

Nero stood out immediately. The nursery team described him as affectionate and confident, but his physical presentation raised questions that could not be answered at once. While he was awake, his head moved from side to side in a pronounced, nearly continuous bobble.

What the ASPCA veterinarians observed
A persistent head movement with no settled cause
“When Nero first came to us, he had a significant, almost non-stop, side-to-side head movement,” explained Dr. Ralph Tran, a veterinarian in the ASPCA’s Kitten Nursery. The account says the team was unsure whether the movement came from an untreated inner-ear infection, possible brain damage, or trauma.
Those possibilities were reported as clinical considerations, not a confirmed diagnosis. The story does not identify a definitive cause, provide a long-term prognosis, or establish that Nero’s condition represented a particular disorder. It records what the veterinary team was considering at that time.

Dr. Tran prescribed long-term antibiotics because an infection was possible. The nursery also treated Nero for an upper respiratory infection and conjunctivitis. The ASPCA story reports that his condition improved, but the bobbling did not disappear completely.

That distinction matters. Improvement meant the kitten was doing better after care; it did not resolve the underlying uncertainty or show that antibiotics would be appropriate for another cat. The 2018 account contains no later medical record for Nero and no independent assessment of his health today.
The chance encounter that changed his prospects
A glance through a mobile adoption vehicle
Ray Li first saw Nero through the window of an ASPCA Mobile Adoptions Vehicle in Manhattan. The meeting lasted only an instant. “Our eyes met for less than one second,” Li explained.
That brief look was enough for Li to remember the kitten. He told his friend Kiki Zhang, an Animal Care Centers of NYC volunteer, that he had fallen in love with Nero. Zhang’s connection to animal welfare helped turn an impulse into a return visit: Li went back to meet the kitten rather than relying on a fleeting impression through the vehicle window.

The second meeting gave Li an opportunity to see Nero more closely and to learn about the kitten’s needs. The account does not describe a formal test, a comparison with other cats, or a guaranteed medical outcome. It describes one person choosing to continue with a particular kitten after learning that the head movement had improved but remained.

Li adopted Nero and renamed him Bubble. The new name reflected the kitten’s distinctive bobbling motion, but Li’s comments also show that he did not reduce the animal to that symptom.
Why Li chose Bubble despite the lingering symptom
“I don’t think of him as disabled,” Li said of Nero, now called Bubble. He also explained his approach in a short sentence: “I just let Bubble be Bubble.”
Those remarks describe Li’s personal view of his new companion. They should not be read as a veterinary conclusion about the movement, a statement that the symptom had no practical effect, or advice for every adopter facing an animal with an unexplained sign. The story gives no information about Bubble’s future medical needs, mobility, or quality of life beyond the period it covers.
What it does show is the role of an adopter’s expectations. Li was willing to proceed without a complete answer about the bobbling. His decision was based on the kitten he met—described by the ASPCA as confident and affectionate—as well as his willingness to accept that Bubble might remain unusual.

Bubble’s first adjustment at home
A separate space while the cats became familiar
Li already lived with Wawa, an eight-year-old Abyssinian mix. Rather than placing the new kitten directly into the household’s shared space, he set Bubble up in his own crate while Bubble and Wawa adjusted to one another’s presence.
The ASPCA account presents the crate as the arrangement used in this home during the initial adjustment. It does not identify a crate brand, model, size, or safety feature, and it does not present a step-by-step introduction protocol. Readers should therefore treat this detail as part of Bubble’s story, not as a universal guarantee or a substitute for individualized guidance when cats are distressed or medically vulnerable.
The relationship that followed
According to the story, Bubble and Wawa later became fast friends. They often played together and napped together. That was the observed result in Li’s household after the cats had time to adjust.
The outcome is encouraging, but it remains a single household account. The ASPCA story supplies no study of cat introductions, no success rate, and no evidence that another pair of cats—or another kitten with head movement—would respond in the same way. Wawa’s age and individual temperament, Bubble’s behavior, and Li’s management all belonged to this particular situation.

The people around Nero before adoption
Nero’s path to Li’s home included more than one point of contact. The resident who surrendered the stray kitten enabled him to enter the shelter system rather than remain without care. Brooklyn Animal Care Centers of NYC transported him to the ASPCA Kitten Nursery. Veterinary staff treated his infections and monitored the unresolved head movement. Volunteers and adoption staff kept presenting him to potential adopters.
Eileen Hanavan, Senior Manager of the ASPCA’s Offsite Adoption and Foster Programs, described the impression he made on the people caring for him: “He captured the hearts of our staff and volunteers with his confident and affectionate nature, and we’re thrilled that Ray sees him for who he is—a special kitten with a big personality.”
That statement explains why Nero remained memorable to the people who met him. It does not add a medical diagnosis or predict how other kittens in shelters will fare. It is an attributed description of Nero’s temperament in the ASPCA program.

What this adoption story can—and cannot—establish
What is documented
- Nero entered the ASPCA Kitten Nursery after transport from Brooklyn Animal Care Centers of NYC.
- His head movement was substantial and persistent while he was awake, and its cause was uncertain in the account.
- He received treatment for possible infection, an upper respiratory infection, and conjunctivitis.
- Ray Li adopted him after seeing him at a mobile adoption vehicle and returning to meet him.
- Li renamed him Bubble and used a separate crate while Bubble and Wawa adjusted.
- The ASPCA reported that the two cats later played and slept together.
What is not established
- The story does not confirm whether an inner-ear infection, trauma, brain injury, or another condition caused the bobbling.
- It does not provide a definitive prognosis, later medical records, or Bubble’s current circumstances.
- It does not compare adoption agencies, treatments, crates, or introduction methods.
- It supplies no population statistics about kittens with head movement, adoption outcomes, or cat-to-cat introductions.
Keeping those boundaries visible protects the meaning of the story. Bubble’s adoption is a documented, hopeful outcome for one kitten, not evidence that an unexplained neurological sign is harmless or that every introduction will end in friendship.
Why the story still resonates
Nero’s adoption did not depend on a perfect medical explanation. It began with a moment of recognition, continued when Li returned to meet him, and became possible because Li accepted the kitten as an individual rather than waiting for every uncertainty to vanish.
The ending is equally specific: Bubble and Wawa eventually shared play and naps in Li’s home. The ASPCA’s account leaves readers with a portrait of adaptation on both sides—the kitten settling into a new environment, the resident cat making room, and an adopter allowing the new companion’s personality to remain visible.
For readers encountering the story years after its publication, the most accurate conclusion is also the simplest one: Nero found a home because a chance meeting led to a return visit, a willing adopter, and time for two cats to adjust. The medical questions surrounding his bobbling were not solved in the article, but they did not erase his chance to be chosen.
