Never cut a mat with scissors: matted fur can sit against the skin, hiding it from view. Tight, large, painful, or skin-irritating mats—and any mat your cat will not tolerate—need help from a veterinarian or an experienced cat groomer.
Check the mat before you try to remove it
Look at the tangle without pulling or pinching it. If it is small and loose, the surrounding skin looks normal, and your cat is calm, gentle combing may be reasonable. If the mat is tight, large, widespread, painful, or close against the skin, do not try to work it out at home. VCA advises that small or minor tangles may be gently combed, but warns against tugging or forcing the fur (VCA Animal Hospitals: Grooming and Coat Care for Your Cat).
How to comb out a small, loose tangle
- Wait for a calm moment. Try only if your cat is relaxed and accepts gentle handling. A long-toothed metal comb is one tool VCA identifies for medium- and long-haired coats.
- Work gently. Comb the loose tangle without pulling or forcing the fur. Stop if it does not begin to loosen easily.
- Stop at any sign of discomfort. If your cat flinches, struggles, cries, or resists, end the attempt. Do not restrain a struggling cat and continue; mats can be sensitive, and removal may be distressing.
Do not bathe the cat before trying to address a tangle: VCA warns that tangles can become impossible to remove after bathing (VCA Animal Hospitals).
Why scissors are not safe
Do not cut a mat out with scissors, even if you cannot see the skin. Fur can mat tightly against the body, making the skin difficult to distinguish from the tangle and easy to cut. VCA’s guidance is explicit: “Only use clippers to remove mats — never scissors” (VCA Animal Hospitals). That warning is not a recommendation to clip a difficult mat yourself; home clipping requires skill, and professional help is safer when the mat is tight or extensive. Cats Protection also advises against using scissors on matted fur (Cats Protection: Tips for grooming long-haired cats).

When to call a veterinarian or groomer
Arrange professional help if a mat is tight against the skin, large, severe, widespread, or will not loosen with gentle combing. Choose a veterinarian if the skin looks irritated, your cat seems painful, or the cat may need an examination. A veterinarian can assess the skin and decide whether sedation is appropriate for difficult removal. An experienced cat groomer may be suitable for a difficult coat mat when there is no apparent skin problem; VCA recommends professional help for severe tangles and notes that extensive removal can be distressing (VCA Animal Hospitals; VCA Animal Hospitals: How To Groom A Long-Haired Cat).
Preventing tail mats and noticing a health change
Inspect your cat’s coat regularly and groom in a way the cat tolerates. Long-haired cats may need daily brushing, according to VCA; the right routine depends on the individual coat and cat. If matting is new or keeps returning, or your cat has become less able to groom, discuss it with a veterinarian. Arthritis, obesity, and other health issues can make grooming difficult (VCA Animal Hospitals).
