For a complete emptying and wash, follow the schedule on the specific product’s package; there is no single replacement interval for all lightweight formulas. As a general hygiene benchmark, the Merck Veterinary Manual advises cleaning the entire box at least weekly.
Daily scooping is different from changing all the litter
Remove solid waste and urine clumps daily, then add fresh litter as needed to maintain the depth specified on the package. Daily scooping applies to lightweight litter too: Petco gives that advice for the category, and Merck recommends it for litter boxes generally.

A full change means discarding the remaining litter and washing the tray. The recommended timing for that job varies by product and source, so do not assume the word “lightweight” sets the schedule.

The available guidance differs in scope and authority. Merck’s general care guidance is to clean the entire box at least weekly. Retailer and manufacturer schedules for particular litter categories or formulas allow longer intervals:

These recommendations should not be averaged into a single interval. Use the package directions for your formula, and clean sooner if the litter or tray becomes dirty or unpleasant to use. Merck notes that a cat may reject a dirty box and soil elsewhere.
Adjust for the litter type and number of cats
Clumping litter allows you to remove urine clumps while keeping the remaining litter in use, whereas non-clumping products may need full replacement sooner. The different schedules Cat’s Pride gives for its clumping and non-clumping litter illustrate why the exact product matters.

Use also affects the schedule. Merck says more cats require more frequent cleaning and replacement; Petco likewise says multi-cat households may need to refresh lightweight litter more often. If several cats share one box, judge its condition and usability rather than relying on a one-cat interval.
Follow the package for litter depth and disposal
Depth and handling instructions are product-specific. Cat’s Pride recommends maintaining a three-inch level for its scoopable clumping litter. A Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agency label transcript for a different clumping litter specifies at least two inches, advises washing hands after contact with used litter, and says not to flush the product or waste into a toilet or septic system. Do not treat either depth or disposal instruction as universal; check your own package and follow its directions.

When a change in box use needs attention
If your cat begins avoiding the box or eliminating outside it, cleaning the tray may help if it is dirty, but the behavior can also signal illness or another problem. Merck advises that out-of-box soiling may warrant veterinary attention. A litter-change schedule is not a diagnosis; contact your veterinarian if the change persists or you are concerned.
