If you display pumpkins, consider whether animals can reach them and avoid paint or treatments that could harm animals that eat them.
Choose solid decorations, not fibers or netting
Stretchy synthetic spiderwebs, fine mesh, fishing line, tinsel, and similar materials can trap wildlife. Birds and other animals may become entangled, and pulling at the material can make an entanglement worse. Choose solid, large decorations instead, such as statuary or other sturdy pieces that do not leave fine strands in the yard.

If you want a web effect, place it inside a window. Indoor graphics or silhouettes create a similar look without putting web fibers outdoors. Alison Hermance, communications director at WildCare, explains: “Spider web is designed by nature, and by the spider, to entangle and entrap.” Audubon describes wildlife rehabilitators treating birds caught in decorative webbing.
Keep loops and hanging strands out of wildlife routes
Closed loops and loose hanging strands can catch animals. Avoid decorations with loops, and secure string lights and other hanging decor so they cannot dangle into places animals may pass. Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center also advises keeping decorations away from trees, animal trails, and flowering plants.

Use less outdoor light, and aim it carefully
Bright outdoor displays can add unnecessary light to habitat. Calgary Wildlife recommends steady, low-intensity lighting aimed toward the house, then switching it off after trick-or-treating. The National Wildlife Federation advises turning outdoor lights off at bedtime or using timers. WWF’s 2025 guide recommends lighting only areas that need it and identifies warm LED or motion-sensor lights as options.
For a display, use the least light needed to make it visible, point lights toward the house rather than across the yard, and set a timer or curfew. A flameless light inside a pumpkin does not need to mean leaving other outdoor lights on all night.

Place pumpkins thoughtfully and leave them untreated
Outdoor pumpkins can attract animals that may eat them, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A carved pumpkin without paint or chemical treatment is a better choice where wildlife may reach it. Painted pumpkins may be toxic if eaten, so keep them indoors and away from animals; follow product directions for any treatment. Harmony Wildlife specifically advises against treating pumpkins with bleach.
Before setting a pumpkin outside, consider whether it is accessible to wildlife and whether its location could draw animals toward a walkway or other busy area. If you cannot keep a painted pumpkin away from animals, display it indoors instead.

Make the display flame-safe and keep exits clear
Texas Department of Insurance recommends glowsticks or electric candles instead of open-flame candles in pumpkins. Battery-operated LED tea lights are one flameless option. Keep exits unobstructed, and if your display uses power, use outdoor-rated cords that are in good condition.
The National Park Service reports NFPA figures of 1,000 Halloween-decoration fires annually, with an average of 6 civilian deaths, 53 civilian injuries, and $16 million in direct property damage each year. The NPS page does not specify the data year, so these figures should not be read as a current-year estimate.

A quick check before you switch on the display
- Replace stretchy webbing, fine netting, fishing line, and tinsel with solid decorations or indoor window graphics.
- Remove closed loops and secure loose strings; keep decorations away from trees, trails, and flowering plants.
- Use only enough outdoor light to show the display, aim it at the house, and switch it off after the event or set a timer.
- Keep painted or treated pumpkins where wildlife cannot reach them; do not use bleach on pumpkins.
- Choose flameless pumpkin lighting, use sound outdoor-rated cords, and leave exits clear.
