For many adult aquarium fish, start with one small feeding a day. Some fish do well with food daily or every other day, but the right schedule depends on species, age, diet, and tank setup. Feed modest portions, watch what the fish eat, and avoid leaving excess food to decay.

How often should adult fish be fed?

Once a day is a reasonable starting point for many adult pet fish. The University of Florida IFAS Extension says one daily feeding is sufficient for most pet animals, while Connecticut’s home-aquarium guidance recommends feeding most fish daily or at least every other day. These are general starting points, not a schedule for every species.

Follow species-specific care guidance if your fish has unusual dietary needs, and adjust for its age and the conditions of the aquarium. The National Research Council notes that feeding practices vary across aquatic animals and care systems; its guidance is not a home-aquarium schedule. National Research Council, Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals discusses that broader variation.

How much food should you give?

Offer a modest portion and observe whether the fish eat it. Reduce the amount if food is left behind rather than adding more on a fixed timetable. There is no single portion size or number of minutes that applies to every fish and tank.

Uneaten food can foul aquarium water. Connecticut DEEP warns that overfeeding can harm fish outcomes, and UF/IFAS identifies it as a common cause of degraded water quality. Cloudy water or accumulating food can be a reason to review feeding and tank care, but neither observation alone identifies the cause of a water-quality or health problem.

Do fry and young fish need more frequent feedings?

Often, yes: growing fish may need smaller meals more frequently than adults. UF/IFAS distinguishes young stock from most pet fish, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s classroom aquarium guide describes feeding developing fry small pinches as they grow, progressing to morning and afternoon feedings in that setting. Those instructions are for developing fish in a classroom and salmon-rearing context, not a universal schedule for adult community-tank fish. USFWS Aquarium Care and Maintenance Guide (2022)

How should species and diet affect the schedule?

Species, age or size, diet, and the aquarium’s life-support setup all affect feeding needs. Choose food suited to the fish, including an appropriate type and particle size, and consult an authoritative species-care source when the schedule or diet is uncertain. The CDC likewise advises learning what food different fish need: CDC: Fish.

What if you’ll be away?

Do not assume every fish can safely go a particular number of days without food. The general sources do not establish a universal fasting duration. For a planned absence, arrange a reliable caretaker or use species-specific guidance to decide whether feeding is needed.

An automatic feeder is optional, not a requirement for every home aquarium. If you use one, test it in advance and check that it dispenses the intended portion. FDA guidance about feeder maintenance and calibration concerns aquatic-animal feeding trials, not a consumer endorsement: FDA, CVM GFI #53.

When should you get fish-specific advice?

Seek an authoritative care source for the particular species when its dietary needs are unusual or a general adult schedule does not fit. If a fish stops eating or appears ill, consult an aquatic veterinarian. General feeding guidance is not a veterinary assessment.
