A round-looking betta is not necessarily overweight: a swollen abdomen can also signal illness, and appearance alone cannot tell you the cause. Check your fish’s outline from above and look for changes in appetite, swimming, buoyancy, breathing, or behavior. If its belly is clearly enlarged or other symptoms appear, contact a veterinarian who sees fish.
How to check your betta’s body shape
Observe your betta from directly above while it is swimming normally. Fish veterinarian Dr. Jessie Sanders describes a healthy outline as streamlined: a narrow middle can suggest the fish is too thin, while sides that bulge beyond the shoulders can suggest excess body condition. This is a screening clue, not a diagnosis.

If you have older photos, compare them with the fish’s current outline. A gradual change is different from a belly that has become enlarged quickly, but neither comparison can identify the cause. No validated numeric body-condition threshold for betta obesity is established in the sources cited here.

An enlarged abdomen can have explanations other than excess body condition. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine advises seeking veterinary guidance for an enlarged belly and for changes in buoyancy, appetite, or behavior. There is no reliable home check that distinguishes fat from constipation, fluid accumulation, a mass, or another health problem.

Pay attention to the whole fish, not just its shape. Lethargic swimming, appetite loss lasting more than a day, rapid breathing, and lumps or masses are among the signs PetMD says warrant a call to a veterinarian. Labored breathing or difficulty rising to the water surface also deserves prompt attention. Do not wait for raised scales—or any one particular warning sign—before seeking help.
What to note before contacting a veterinarian
Write down when you first noticed the enlargement and whether it is changing. Note what and how much the fish eats, and any change in swimming, buoyancy, appetite, breathing, energy, or behavior. The University of Illinois veterinary guidance describes reviewing the fish’s environment, food sources, and water quality as part of a husbandry assessment, so include relevant details about its setup and recent changes.

Contact a veterinarian experienced with fish, and confirm that the clinic sees fish before making an appointment. Dr. Krista Keller, a veterinarian and board-certified specialist in zoological medicine, recommends veterinary advice for abnormal behavior, buoyancy or appetite changes, skin lesions, or an enlarged belly. For routine care, the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine recommends balanced pelleted or flaked food daily, in an amount the betta can eat within three to five minutes, with no leftovers. Overfeeding can contribute to obesity and other health problems. This is general care guidance, not a treatment plan for an individual fish or a way to diagnose a swollen belly.

If excess body condition seems likely and your betta otherwise appears well, Dr. Sanders suggests reducing each feeding by one pellet and reassessing after two weeks. Pellet sizes and individual needs differ, so do not treat that adjustment as a universal ration. Avoid aggressive dieting, fasting, or medication based only on a photograph or online checklist; unexplained swelling calls for veterinary advice.
