At the ASPCA Recovery & Rehabilitation Center in Pawling, New York, playgroups are one part of broader care for dogs recovering from cruelty and neglect. The ASPCA says they help dogs exercise, build social skills and gain confidence; some dogs may benefit from the company of more outgoing canine companions. The organization has not published playgroup-specific outcome measurements or detailed matching and supervision protocols.
What playgroups are meant to do
The ASPCA describes regular playgroups as a way for dogs to exercise, develop social skills and gain confidence. It also notes that more outgoing canine companions can sometimes help other dogs engage. These are the organization’s stated aims, not published measurements of the effects of playgroups on individual dogs.

How the Pawling center differs from another ASPCA rehabilitation center
The Pawling Recovery & Rehabilitation Center serves dogs recovering from cruelty and neglect and provides integrated medical and behavioral rehabilitation. It is distinct from the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center in Weaverville, North Carolina, which focuses on severely fearful, undersocialized dogs. Their programs, facilities and outcomes should not be treated as interchangeable.
