Make the first puzzle feeder easy, familiar, and optional. Choose a design with visible food and roomy openings, offer it in a quiet spot when your cat is ready to eat, and leave the usual bowl available if a change in routine could unsettle them. Let your cat’s comfort—not a fixed schedule—determine when to make the puzzle harder.
Choose an easy puzzle that suits your cat and their food
For a first attempt, pick a puzzle where your cat can see and smell the food and reach it with little effort. A clear design with several large openings is one practical starting point. Fill it generously so the first reward is easy to obtain; the goal is to help your cat discover how it works, not to make them solve a difficult task before eating.

Match the style to your cat and the food. The Ontario SPCA suggests stationary puzzles for wet food, while kibble can be used in stationary or mobile designs. It suggests trying mobile puzzles for active cats or cats that tend to investigate toys with their noses, and stationary puzzles for quieter cats. These are starting points rather than guarantees: your cat’s response is the best guide. The SPCA’s guide was sponsored by Royal Canin.
Make the first introduction low-pressure
Offer the puzzle when your cat is likely to be hungry, rather than just after a meal, and put it somewhere calm where they can investigate without interruption. Ontario SPCA’s guidance is direct: “Introduce the puzzle in a quiet area where they will not be disturbed.”
Start with your cat’s familiar food if possible. A few pieces of kibble on the floor beside or around the puzzle can help draw attention to it. If your cat needs extra encouragement, try a suitable favorite treat or food as an initial incentive, then transition toward their regular food once they are using the puzzle. For a rolling puzzle, gently moving it at first may help maintain interest. Let your cat approach and leave freely; do not force interaction.

Keep the usual bowl available if your cat needs it
There is no single bowl-transition rule for every cat. Some cats may be reluctant to work for food after always eating from a bowl, while others may find a changed feeding routine stressful. A veterinary review notes that a food container can act as a safety signal for some cats. If that seems true for yours, place the puzzle beside the usual bowl and let them choose.
Tufts Petfoodology recommends splitting the cat’s total daily food between the puzzle and the normal bowl until the cat figures out the feeder. This offers a gradual option without making access to a meal depend on solving the puzzle. Do not withhold food to compel your cat to use it.

Make the puzzle harder only after your cat succeeds comfortably
Once your cat is using the starter setup easily, you can introduce a modest challenge. Options suggested by the Ontario SPCA include switching to a less transparent puzzle, using one with smaller or fewer openings, or trying a less familiar shape such as a cube.
There is no source-backed universal number of days to wait between stages. Move at your cat’s pace: if they continue to find food without distress, you can try a slightly harder version; if they hesitate or struggle, make access easier again.

Troubleshoot by making food easier to find
- Your cat ignores the puzzle: Move it to a quiet area, make the food more visible and reachable, or try a different style. A suitable favorite food or treat may encourage a first investigation.
- Your cat seems frustrated: Return to an easier setup or offer the puzzle alongside the familiar bowl. Changing access to food can be frustrating, so meals should not become a test.
- Other cats may take the food: Provide enough puzzles for individual use if needed. If cats have diets they cannot share, put the puzzle in a restricted area that only the intended cat can access.
- A dog can reach the puzzle: Place the cat’s puzzle where the dog cannot get to it, or provide the dog with a separate puzzle.
What to expect from the evidence
Puzzle feeders provide a way to make food-finding part of a cat’s routine, but the veterinary review describes their effects as a relatively new area of study and calls for more research comparing enrichment approaches. The available guidance supports a gradual, cat-led introduction; it does not establish that puzzle feeders improve health or welfare for every cat.
