The University of California reports that six years later those treated plots had 40,000 plants, while nearby untreated ground remained mostly barren. The result points to how burrowing animals can help disturbed soil recover—but it describes particular plots, not a landscape-wide planting or proof that gophers alone caused every plant to grow.
What did the scientists do?
The May 18, 1980 eruption buried or damaged large areas with ash, pumice and volcanic debris. A 2024 paper describes severe impacts on forest habitat and soil microbial communities, as well as the destruction of 350 km² of coniferous forest and montane habitat. On the Pumice Plain, the surface was especially hostile to new growth.

In 1982, researchers tested whether pocket gophers might help by enclosing one animal for 24 hours in a one-square-meter area around a lupine. This was a small, contained plot experiment—not a release of gophers across the mountain. The University of California’s 2024 account describes the pumice slabs as having only about a dozen plants before the experiment.

How did gophers help plants grow?
Gophers dig through soil as they burrow. The researchers’ hypothesis was that this activity could bring older soil up to the surface and mix it with nutrient-poor volcanic material. As UC Riverside microbiologist Michael Allen put it, “They’re often considered pests, but we thought they would take old soil, move it to the surface, and that would be where recovery would occur.”

Burrowing may also move seeds and soil microbes. Among those microbes are mycorrhizal fungi, which associate with plant roots and can exchange nutrients and other resources with plants. The later study found greater richness of certain root-associated mycorrhizal fungi in historical gopher plots. That finding makes microbial dispersal a plausible part of the story, alongside soil mixing; it does not isolate the effect of each mechanism.
What does the 40,000-plant figure mean?
UC reports that gopher plots had 40,000 plants six years after the experiment, while nearby untreated land remained mostly barren. This is a reported outcome for the treated plots. The accessible report does not give a species-by-species breakdown of the plants, so the figure should not be read as a count of any particular plant species or as a mountain-wide total.

The contrast is striking, but it is not evidence that gophers alone explain all recovery at Mount St. Helens. The experiment involved small plots, and the proposed effects—soil movement, seed movement and microbial dispersal—were not tested as separate causes of the plant count.

What did the 2024 microbial study add?
The paper “Microbial community structure in recovering forests of Mount St. Helens,” published in Frontiers in Microbiomes on November 4, 2024, examined soil samples collected in 2014. Researchers used molecular sequencing to study bacterial, fungal and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities at the Pumice Plain and Bear Meadow. Their comparisons included historical lupine plots with and without gopher activity, as well as clearcut and old-growth forest sites—distinct land-use histories, not interchangeable versions of the gopher experiment.

The researchers found that microbial community composition varied across land-use histories and between long-term lupine plots with and without historical gopher activity. They also found greater richness of some root-associated mycorrhizal fungi in the historical gopher plots. These results help explain how soil organisms may be involved in recovery, but the authors state that their methods did not characterize the full course of ecological succession. The 2014 sampling was decades after the brief 1982 intervention; it did not produce the 40,000-plant count or reconstruct the complete path from barren pumice to vegetation.

The Mount St. Helens example shows why recovery after a severe disturbance is not only a matter of plants arriving. Soil structure and the organisms living in it can matter too. In this case, a brief disturbance by a burrowing animal may have helped move soil and biological material into a place where plants could establish. The plot results and later microbial findings support that as a plausible explanation, while leaving open how much each process contributed.
