How Prairie Dogs Create Bird Habitat Across the Grasslands

Prairie dogs do not deliberately help birds, but their burrows, grazing and alarm calls reshape grasslands in ways that some bird species use for nesting, feeding or predator awareness.

Prairie dogs help birds by changing the grassland around them. Their grazing keeps patches short and open, and their digging reshapes soil, moisture and vegetation. Those changes can expose seeds and insects, create nesting or shelter opportunities, and make some birds easier to detect predators in. Prairie dogs are not deliberately feeding or protecting birds; they are ecosystem engineers whose colonies become a distinct kind of neighborhood.

The benefits are species- and place-specific. A burrowing owl may depend on an available underground shelter, while a mountain plover or horned lark may respond mainly to the open ground above it. A long-billed curlew may even react to information carried in prairie dog alarm calls. None of these examples means every bird does better in every prairie dog colony.

What changes when prairie dogs occupy a grassland?

Prairie dogs alter habitat in two connected ways: they graze repeatedly and they excavate extensive burrow systems. National Park Service ecology material describes effects on vegetation, soil and moisture conditions. Instead of a uniform stand of tall grass, a colony can contain closely cropped areas, bare or sparsely vegetated patches, mounds and underground passages.

That patchwork changes what birds can see, where they can move and how they find food. Short vegetation may reveal seeds and insects that are hidden in taller growth. Exposed soil can provide places for some open-country birds to walk, forage or nest. Burrow entrances and the surrounding mounds add physical structure that is absent from otherwise continuous prairie.

The result is not simply “more habitat.” It is different habitat. A species that requires dense cover may avoid the most heavily grazed center of a town, while a species adapted to open ground may find the same area useful. Habitat quality depends on the bird, the colony’s activity, surrounding vegetation and local conditions.

Two separate ways prairie dogs can help birds

Burrows provide physical shelter and nest sites

Prairie dog burrows are ready-made underground spaces. Some birds use existing burrows for nesting, refuge or protection from weather and predators. Burrowing owls are the clearest example because their name reflects a close association with mammal-dug cavities. The colony can supply the below-ground spaces an owl needs without the bird having to excavate them itself.

Burrows also create a cooler, more protected microenvironment than the exposed surface. Whether a particular bird uses one depends on its behavior and on details such as entrance condition, depth, nearby vegetation and whether another animal already occupies it. The presence of burrows alone does not guarantee that a colony will support a breeding pair.

Short, open vegetation changes feeding and nesting conditions

Grazing creates the second pathway, which is independent of direct burrow use. Prairie dogs maintain low vegetation and open sight lines. National Park Service material reports that meadowlarks, grasshopper sparrows and other birds occur in greater numbers in black-tailed prairie dog towns than in surrounding rangeland, where open spaces can make seeds and insects more accessible.

For a bird that searches from the ground, a short sward can reduce the amount of vegetation hiding prey. For a bird that nests in open country, sparse cover may provide the visual conditions it needs. These are ecological effects of the landscape, not a cooperative exchange in which prairie dogs intentionally provision birds.

What birds are associated with prairie dog towns?

Bird communities differ from one colony and region to another. The examples below show the kinds of relationships documented in the supplied studies; they are not a complete list of birds that may occur in a town.

Bird or group How the colony may matter Evidence and setting
Burrowing owl Uses mammal-dug burrows for nesting or shelter; may also respond to open, short vegetation. Studies in black-tailed prairie dog colonies in northeastern Wyoming and in eastern Colorado.
Mountain plover Associated with open colony ground and sparse vegetation; colony sites can provide nesting habitat. Great Plains bird-community study.
Horned lark May use the open, sparsely vegetated conditions around colony sites. Great Plains bird-community study and National Park Service material.
Killdeer Associated with open colony habitat that supports ground foraging or nesting. Great Plains bird-community study.
McCown’s longspur Associated with the open structure of colony sites. Great Plains bird-community study.
Meadowlarks and grasshopper sparrows May find seeds and insects more accessible in open spaces. National Park Service comparison of black-tailed prairie dog towns with surrounding rangeland.
Long-billed curlew May obtain information from prairie dog alarm calls in a particular predator-simulation experiment. Study described by the Associated Press on June 12, 2025; this is an information pathway, not proof of universal behavior.

A Great Plains study found greater densities on colony sites for burrowing owls, mountain plovers, killdeer, horned larks and McCown’s longspurs than off colony sites. “Greater density” describes the sampled communities and does not mean that every individual bird prefers a colony or that all bird species increase there.

Do prairie dogs make habitat for burrowing owls?

They can, especially where suitable burrows and open vegetation occur together. Burrowing owls are a useful case because their relationship with prairie dogs has both a direct and an indirect component: the owls can use burrows, and the surrounding colony can provide the open structure in which they hunt and watch for danger.

What the Wyoming burrow study measured

Lantz, Conway and Anderson’s 2007 multiscale study in black-tailed prairie dog colonies in northeastern Wyoming compared 105 nest burrows with 85 unoccupied burrows. Their selected model classified 76% of cases correctly. That percentage refers to the performance of that study’s model in its sampled setting; it is not a universal test of whether any prairie dog burrow is suitable for an owl.

The comparison also illustrates why “a colony has burrows” is an incomplete description. Owls select among available sites, and the qualities of an individual entrance and its surroundings can matter as much as the colony’s overall footprint.

What the eastern Colorado study found in 2026

Albright, Conrey and Kendall examined 175 survey plots across two sample years in eastern Colorado. They evaluated prairie dog colony size, prairie dog activity and vegetation in relation to western burrowing owl occupancy and reproductive success.

The reported association was with prairie dog activity, not colony size. In other words, the study did not support the shortcut that a larger town is automatically better owl habitat. Activity can reflect the current way prairie dogs are using and modifying the site, whereas area alone says little about present vegetation structure, burrow availability or conditions at the plot level.

This result is geographically specific to eastern Colorado and to the western burrowing owls and measures examined. It should not be turned into a rule for every prairie dog species, colony or owl population.

Why colony size is not the same as habitat quality

Colony boundaries are a coarse measure. Two towns with similar areas can differ in how recently they were occupied, how intensively they are grazed, how many usable burrows they contain and how much tall vegetation remains around their edges. A small active patch may provide better conditions for one bird than a larger, lightly used or heavily overgrown patch.

The 2026 eastern Colorado findings make this distinction explicit for western burrowing owls: occupancy and reproductive success were associated with activity but not colony size. That does not mean size is irrelevant in every context. It means area by itself did not explain the owl outcomes in that study.

For field interpretation, treat size as a map feature, not a score. Ask what the prairie dogs are doing now, what the vegetation looks like, and whether the bird’s requirements involve burrows, open ground or both.

Can birds find more food in a prairie dog town?

Prairie dog grazing can make food easier to see or reach without increasing the total amount of food. Short vegetation exposes seeds and may reveal insects moving across the soil surface. Open ground also lets a bird scan a larger area while walking or standing.

That mechanism helps explain why National Park Service material reports more meadowlarks, grasshopper sparrows and other birds in black-tailed prairie dog towns than in surrounding rangeland. It also helps explain the greater colony-site densities reported for several Great Plains species.

Food access remains conditional. Rainfall, season, plant growth, insect abundance and the surrounding rangeland all influence what a bird can actually find. A colony can offer visibility without offering enough food at every time of year, and a bird may move between colony and non-colony habitat during the same day.

Can birds understand prairie dog alarm calls?

Alarm calls add a less obvious connection: information. A report by the Associated Press dated June 12, 2025, described research in which long-billed curlews crouched sooner when prairie dog alarm calls played as a simulated badger approached. The birds’ response suggests that a curlew can treat another species’ warning as relevant information about a nearby predator.

Conservation biologist Holly Jones, a co-author of the research described in that report, said: “But now we are realizing they are also shaping the ecosystems by producing and spreading information.”

The experimental details matter. The response was observed during an approaching simulated badger and in a particular study of long-billed curlews. It does not establish that all birds recognize prairie dog calls, that every call carries the same meaning, or that a colony makes birds safer in general. It does show that prairie dog effects can extend beyond vegetation and burrows into the soundscape other animals use to make decisions.

Why the relationship varies among birds and places

Different species need different structures

An owl seeking an underground nest has a different requirement from a lark feeding on exposed insects. A bird that needs concealment may avoid the most open patch, while a bird that relies on long sight lines may select it. The same prairie dog action can therefore help one species and offer little value to another.

Prairie dog species and regions differ

The strongest examples here concern black-tailed prairie dog colonies, Great Plains communities and eastern Colorado. Findings from those settings should not automatically be applied to every prairie dog species or every grassland. Climate, soil, grazing history, predator communities and land use can change how a colony functions.

Colony edges can be as important as centers

Birds often use a mixture of conditions rather than a single uniform surface. The transition between closely grazed ground and taller surrounding grass can provide both visibility and nearby cover. A map showing only the colony boundary cannot reveal that fine-scale arrangement.

How to judge whether a prairie dog colony is useful to birds

When interpreting a colony as bird habitat, look for the mechanism rather than assuming a benefit from the prairie dogs’ presence alone:

  • Burrow pathway: Are there available entrances and structures that a burrow-using bird could occupy?
  • Vegetation pathway: Is the ground short and open enough to expose seeds, insects or walking routes?
  • Bird requirement: Does the species being considered need a burrow, open sight lines, sparse nesting cover or a combination?
  • Activity: Is there evidence of current prairie dog use, rather than only a historical colony outline?
  • Landscape context: What habitat surrounds the colony, and can birds move between the open patch and taller cover?
  • Evidence limits: Is the conclusion based on a named study’s species and region, or is it being generalized beyond those conditions?

This approach prevents a common mistake: treating “prairie dog town” as a single habitat type with one predictable bird response.

The ecological bottom line

Prairie dogs help shape bird habitat by engineering the ground beneath and above them. Burrows can supply shelter or nesting opportunities; grazing can maintain short, open vegetation where seeds and insects are easier to find; and alarm calls can sometimes provide information about predators. Studies have documented stronger associations for particular birds, including burrowing owls, mountain plovers, horned larks, killdeer, McCown’s longspurs, meadowlarks and grasshopper sparrows, but the pattern is not universal.

The most accurate answer to “How do prairie dogs help birds?” is therefore conditional: they create a changing set of physical and informational opportunities, and individual bird species use those opportunities differently. Activity, vegetation and local setting matter at least as much as the size of the colony on a map.
