Radioactive isotopes are not a shield that stops poachers from killing rhinos. The Rhisotope Project’s idea is to place a measured quantity of a radioisotope in a rhino’s horn so radiation detectors may identify it if traffickers move it through monitored borders. Project leaders say the added risk of detection could deter illegal trade, but reports of the project’s 2025 launch do not establish that it has reduced poaching or intercepted trafficked horns.
How the radioactive-horn approach is meant to work
The Rhisotope Project, led by South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), proposes embedding a measured quantity of a radioisotope into a rhino horn. Its proponents say the treated horn can trigger radiation-detection equipment at borders, alerting authorities to a possible shipment of illegal wildlife products. Wits described the broader goal as reducing demand for rhino horn (Wits, 2021).

The intended chain is indirect: a horn becomes detectable, traffickers face a greater chance of discovery, and that risk might make the trade less attractive. This is a detection-and-deterrence proposal, not a physical barrier against a poaching attack. A detector response or operational launch does not, by itself, show that enforcement action followed or that poaching declined.
Public accounts do not identify the isotope species, dose, half-life or detector threshold in enough technical detail to state them reliably. Those specifics should not be guessed.

Research and collaboration
Wits reported in June 2021 that Professor James Larkin, director of its Radiation and Health Physics Unit, was leading the project. The collaboration it named included the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Colorado State University, ROSATOM, South Africa’s Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa), researchers, rhino owners and veterinarian William Fowlds. Wits said more than 9,600 rhinos were killed in poaching attacks from 2010 through 2019; that is a historical total, not a current annual rate (Wits, 7 June 2021).
In July 2024, Texas A&M described work with Wits, Colorado State University and other partners. Doctoral student Jordan Hillis modeled potential doses using a detailed computational model of a rhino head; the university said the results were then being prepared for publication (Texas A&M, 29 July 2024).

Reported operational launch in 2025
A Wits release carried by EurekAlert said the project had reached operational status after six years of research and testing, with a launch at the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere (Wits via EurekAlert, 31 July 2025). The Associated Press reported that five rhinos were injected at the July launch and about 20 had been treated in trials during the preceding year. Those figures describe the launch and prior trials as reported in 2025; they do not establish the scale of later deployment (Associated Press, 31 July 2025).
What is known about animal safety
Texas A&M’s 2024 account discussed dose modeling and researchers’ work to make the method safe for the animal. The 2025 Wits release and Associated Press report describe pilot monitoring, including blood tests and veterinary inspections, as finding no harm at the levels used. These are reported project and trial findings, not an independent, comprehensive conclusion about long-term effects in every treated animal.

- Inspired by the legendary Gjallarhorn, one of the Norse gods’ most prized possessions
- Hand-carved and polished from authentic cow horn with a solid brass mouthpiece
- Produces a powerful, resonant sound when blown or amplifies your voice when spoken into
- Large 18–23 inch design makes it a striking and functional historical replica
- Ideal for Viking reenactments, LARP, décor, or as a collectible Norse artifact replica
The available accounts do not provide enough peer-reviewed methods and longitudinal measurements to independently assess long-term safety. The distinction matters: reported observations from pilot monitoring are relevant evidence, but they do not settle every question about repeated or extended exposure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Has the project reduced rhino poaching?
The sources available through the July 2025 launch reports do not show independently measured reductions in poaching, intercepted trafficked horns, prosecutions, or changes in consumer demand attributable to the Rhisotope Project. They report research, testing, a launch and claimed detectability—not a verified conservation outcome. Whether the proposal delivers deterrence will depend on real-world detection and enforcement, and on whether traffickers change their behavior.

For context, the Associated Press cited an IUCN estimate of about 27,000 rhinos globally and estimated South Africa’s population at about 16,000; it also reported about 500 rhinos killed annually in South Africa. These are contextual estimates reported in 2025, not measurements of the project’s effect (Associated Press, 31 July 2025).

Because the method is intended to identify a horn in transit, its proposed benefit depends on detection equipment, border monitoring and an effective response by authorities. It does not directly protect a rhino from an attack in the field. Its advocates present detection risk as a way to make trafficking less appealing, but that deterrent effect remains unproven in the cited reports.
The project is one specialized intervention rather than a comparison of competing isotope products or a substitute for other conservation measures. The sources describe its intended mechanism and reported trials; they do not provide a head-to-head assessment of broader anti-poaching strategies.
