Recognition in a short experiment is not a measure of whether a cat will remember someone months or years later.
What scientists know about cats recognizing people
In a 2013 experiment, researchers played recordings of three strangers calling a cat’s name, followed by the owner’s voice. Of the 20 cats studied, 15 showed a rebound in response when they heard the owner after becoming less responsive to the strangers. The clearest responses were orienting movements of the ears and head, rather than vocal or tail responses. This supports the idea that cats can distinguish their owner’s voice; it does not reveal how long that recognition lasts after separation. Saito and Shinozuka, 2013.

Can a cat tell where an absent owner is?
A 2021 experiment explored whether cats expect a familiar person to be where a voice seems to come from. Cats heard their owner call from one location, then heard the voice appear to come from a different location. They showed the strongest surprise in this mismatched condition. The authors interpreted the result as evidence that cats mentally represent an out-of-sight owner in relation to the owner’s voice. It was a test of spatial expectation during a short playback sequence, not a test of how many days, months, or years a cat remembers someone. Takagi and colleagues, 2021.

Recognizing a familiar voice, expecting a person to be in a particular place, and retaining a memory across a long separation are related but distinct questions. Experiments can show that cats respond differently to familiar and unfamiliar cues in the moment. They cannot, by themselves, establish a maximum retention period.

A 2019 voice-and-face experiment found that cat-café cats looked longer when a face did not match the voice they had heard. House cats did not show a similar tendency. That difference suggests experience may matter for matching human faces and voices, and cautions against assuming every cat uses those cues in the same way. The experiment did not measure recognition after prolonged separation. Takagi and colleagues, 2019.
What reunion behavior can—and cannot—tell you
In a study of 14 privately owned cats, researchers compared behavior after 30 minutes alone with behavior after four hours alone. Cats purred and stretched more at reunion after the longer absence. The authors interpreted this as increased social contact after separation. Those observations describe behavior after absences of minutes or hours; they do not show whether a cat remembers a former owner, or prove what a particular cat feels when someone returns. Vitale Shreve and colleagues, 2017.

What owner surveys say about pet memories
A 2019 survey asked 375 cat and dog owners about their pets’ event memories. One in five respondents said their pet had never remembered an event. Because the results were retrospective owner reports combining cats and dogs, they are not a controlled test of feline memory and cannot estimate how long cats remember a specific person. “Pet memoirs,” 2019.
Does attachment research settle the question?
No. Attachment and recognition are different topics: how a cat responds in an attachment test does not determine whether it can recognize a familiar person or how long it retains that recognition. A 2015 study reported limited evidence for secure attachment under its procedure, but that finding does not establish a memory duration. “Domestic Cats Do Not Show Signs of Secure Attachment to Their Owners,” 2015.

So, can cats forget their owners?
The evidence supports a careful answer: cats can distinguish familiar people using cues such as voice, and experiments suggest they can represent an owner who is out of sight. But the studies described here do not determine whether, or after how long, a cat forgets a former owner following a prolonged separation. There is no validated number of months or years to give. A cat’s reaction at reunion also cannot reliably settle the question: behavior varies, and recognition may not be obvious in the moment.
A review of cat cognition describes memory, voice recognition, responses to human cues, and attachment as areas of study, while noting that the evidence base remains incomplete. Delgado and colleagues, 2015.
