Best Friends Animal Clinic treated his wounds, he recovered over the following weeks with an excellent prognosis, and he was later adopted by Keith Saenger.
The Best Friends Animal Society account, published January 2, 2019, ends with Shorty settling into a home with another adopted dog, Simon. It does not establish Shorty’s present-day health, residence or status, so the outcome below is the one documented at that time.

The attack left Shorty needing care his family could not provide
Shorty’s story began with a serious attack by a much larger dog. The injuries were extensive enough that his local veterinarian recommended surgery. His family brought him for professional care, but the cost was beyond what they could manage. They also worried that keeping him in the same situation could expose him to another injury.

Why the decision mattered
The account does not give Shorty’s age, the exact injuries, the name of the other dog or the amount of the veterinary bill. It does establish two practical barriers: he needed extensive care, and his family could not pay for it while also worrying about his safety. Those facts explain why a rescue organization became part of his treatment plan.
Best Friends took over the medical emergency
Shorty’s veterinarian contacted Best Friends Animal Society. The organization transferred him to the Best Friends Animal Clinic at the Sanctuary, where veterinary staff flushed his wounds and surgically repaired the damage.
Flushing the wounds and repairing them surgically are the specific interventions described in the account. It does not identify the body areas involved, the surgical technique, the number of procedures or the long-term rehabilitation plan. Those details should not be inferred from the story.
The first days were difficult
Shorty’s initial recovery was painful and demanding. The feature says that his first few days were difficult and that he needed pain medication. That description records a challenging early period, not a prediction that every injured dog will follow the same course.

Dr. Nova Reaves, a Best Friends veterinarian, emphasized Shorty’s behavior during treatment: “Through all of his medical treatment, he never growled, tried to bite or even cried out.” The observation is a direct account of this dog’s conduct in the clinic. It should not be turned into a general claim about how dogs respond to severe injuries or surgery.
Recovery continued for several weeks
After the difficult beginning, Shorty began recovering well. The account says he completed treatment after a few weeks and had an excellent prognosis. In context, that prognosis describes the veterinary team’s assessment at the end of the treatment reported in 2019. It is not a guarantee of permanent health, and it does not provide a current medical update.
From the clinic to Dogtown
Once treatment was complete, Shorty moved to Dogtown, the Best Friends setting where he could continue life outside the clinic while waiting for adoption. The feature does not list a separate rehabilitation protocol, a training schedule or a date for the move. Its sequence is clear: emergency veterinary care came first, recovery followed, and Dogtown became the next stage before a permanent home.

Keith Saenger adopted Shorty
Shorty was adopted by Keith Saenger after completing treatment. Saenger described him simply: “Shorty is the sweetest dog.” He also said, “Everyone who meets him falls in love with him. He loves to snuggle and to sleep completely underneath the blankets.”
These comments portray Shorty’s personality in his adoptive home, especially his affection and preference for close contact. They are the adopter’s observations, not a standardized behavioral evaluation. The story does not state how long the adoption process took, whether Shorty had other adoption offers or what arrangements were made for his future veterinary care.
Meeting Simon
Saenger already had another dog, Simon, who had also been adopted from Best Friends. Shorty was nervous around Simon for the first few days. The account describes a gradual change: the dogs became best friends, and Shorty was reluctant to go outside unless Simon went first.

That detail shows both caution and companionship. Shorty did not instantly behave as though nothing had happened; he needed time to feel comfortable with a new dog and a new routine. Simon’s presence appeared to give him confidence, at least in the behavior Saenger reported. The account does not explain whether the dogs shared food, sleeping areas or specific training, so those details remain unknown.

What the story shows about rescue and recovery
Medical access can determine what happens next
Shorty’s family had already sought veterinary help, but the required surgery exceeded their resources. The rescue connection changed what care was possible in this individual case. Best Friends supplied access to a clinic capable of treating the wounds, and the treatment created the opportunity for recovery and adoption.
The account does not claim that every rescue can fund every surgery or that every severely injured dog will have the same prognosis. It documents one dog whose transfer to Best Friends led to treatment and a reported recovery.
Safety was part of the surrender decision
The family’s concern about another attack is as important as the financial problem. They were not only facing a bill; they believed Shorty might remain vulnerable if he stayed where the first injury occurred. The rescue plan addressed both needs by moving him into medical care and then seeking a different home.

Behavioral adjustment continued after healing
Shorty’s physical treatment ended after a few weeks, but his adjustment did not happen instantly. His nervousness around Simon during the first days in the new home suggests that recovery included learning to trust a new companion and environment. His reluctance to go outside without Simon indicates how strongly he relied on that companionship at the time Saenger described it.

What is known—and what remains unresolved

- Best Friends Animal Clinic flushed his wounds and surgically repaired the damage.
- He needed pain medication during a difficult first few days.
- He completed treatment after a few weeks with an excellent prognosis reported by the feature.
- He moved to Dogtown and was adopted by Keith Saenger.

Not established by the account
- Shorty’s current health, age, location or living arrangement.
- Whether he has needed additional surgery or continuing medication.
- The exact nature and severity of every injury.
- The cost of treatment or the financial arrangements behind it.
- Any population-wide rate of dog attacks, rescue intake, surgery or adoption success.
The feature is a single-dog narrative, not a study. It provides no named statistic that can support a broader estimate about how often dogs are injured, how much similar surgery costs or how frequently rescue placements succeed.
Why the publication date matters
Best Friends Animal Society published the feature on January 2, 2019. The adoption and home-life details are therefore historical statements about the period covered by that report. They should not be presented as confirmation of what happened to Shorty later.
Without a newer authoritative update, the responsible conclusion is limited: Shorty received successful treatment as described, was adopted by Saenger and was reported to be thriving with Simon at that time. His present-day circumstances are unresolved.
The lasting meaning of Shorty’s account
Shorty’s path involved four linked decisions: his family sought veterinary help, a rescue organization accepted responsibility for care, clinicians repaired injuries that his family could not afford to treat, and an adopter gave him a secure home. Each step depended on the one before it. Without the surrender, the transfer might not have occurred; without surgery, adoption would have been impossible; without time to adjust, the homecoming would not have been complete.
The most specific portrait comes from the people who saw him at each stage. Dr. Reaves remembered a dog who remained gentle through treatment. Saenger remembered a dog who was nervous at first, then affectionate and deeply attached to Simon. Those observations do not erase the trauma Shorty experienced, but they show the recovery that the 2019 report was able to document.
