After surgery relieved the pressure and pain caused by severe glaucoma, Woody began to show a more playful, confident side. His story, reported by Best Friends Animal Society, is about one dog learning familiar routines and trusting people—not evidence that his sight returned or that the same treatment is right for every dog.

Why Woody’s vision loss raised concern

Woody arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary from a Los Angeles shelter shy and reserved. His unusually round, glossy eyes and tendency to bump into things prompted concern about his vision. Best Friends veterinarians diagnosed severe glaucoma, a condition involving increased pressure in the eye that can cause vision loss and pain.

The feature reports that Woody had surgery at the Best Friends clinic to relieve pressure and pain. Caregiver Anna Morin described the effect this way: “Removing his eyes didn’t take away anything except the pain.” The account concerns Woody’s specific medical history; it does not establish that eye-removal surgery is appropriate for every dog with glaucoma.

What changed after surgery

Morin said Woody’s change was apparent soon after the operation. He began to play, romp with other dogs, and explore a dog park. He also became more comfortable accepting treats and being petted, and he joined volunteers for walks.

The story describes a dog becoming more at ease as pain was relieved and he had time and care. It does not say that Woody regained sight. Morin’s affectionate observation, “Sometimes we joke he must be able to see,” refers to how confidently he moved around, not a medical claim about restored vision.

How Woody learned familiar routines

In foster caregiver Morin’s apartment, Woody learned to manage three flights of stairs. He also became familiar with car rides and walks. At a dog park, he worked out how to navigate a narrow ramp into a pool.

The feature also recounts Woody playing as if he were discovering a squeaky toy for the first time. It names no toy or special design and makes no safety recommendation. The emphasis is on Woody’s growing curiosity and confidence in familiar activities.
