For most cats, there is no evidence-based blacklist of ten ordinary ingredients to avoid. The clearest specific warning is propylene glycol: U.S. regulators say it has not been shown safe for use in cat food and prohibit its use absent an applicable authorization. Other commonly criticized ingredients—such as grains, meat by-products, or additives with unfamiliar names—should not be treated as automatically harmful. Judge a food by its safety, nutritional adequacy, and fit for your cat.
Which cat food ingredient should you avoid?
Propylene glycol
Propylene glycol is the clearest cat-specific concern identified by the FDA and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). FDA regulations state that it has not been shown safe for use in cat food, and FDA’s import alert says cat food containing it is prohibited absent an applicable authorization. AAFCO also describes it as unsafe for cats and prohibited in cat food. See the FDA’s Import Alert 72-06 and AAFCO’s ingredient explanations.

If you see propylene glycol on a cat-food label, do not use the product until you have checked with your veterinarian or the relevant regulator. This warning concerns propylene glycol in cat food; it is not a reason to assume that every ingredient with a chemical-sounding name is unsafe.
Why a list of ten “bad” ingredients can mislead
Many lists lump together ingredients that are legally prohibited for a particular use, ingredients that can be hazardous if contaminated, and ingredients that are merely controversial. Those are not equivalent risks. FDA says food ingredients must be safe for their intended use and serve an appropriate function; it also notes that many ingredients, including meat and grains, are considered safe. The agency’s pet food guidance is a better basis for judging ingredients than a blanket blacklist.

Cats are obligate carnivores, but that fact does not mean every plant-derived ingredient is harmful. A cat’s diet needs to meet its nutritional requirements; the presence or absence of a particular ingredient does not by itself establish that a food is balanced or suitable. Cornell’s feeding guidance discusses cats’ nutritional needs and the importance of veterinary advice.
Ingredients often criticized—but not automatically unsafe
Grains and corn
Grains, including corn, are not inherently toxic to cats. FDA says many grains are considered safe as ingredients. A separate issue is aflatoxin, a toxin that can contaminate affected food. FDA has described aflatoxin poisoning in pets, including possible serious illness; that is a contamination hazard, not evidence that every grain-containing food is unsafe. See the agency’s aflatoxin guidance.

Meat by-products
The words “meat by-products” alone do not prove that a food is dangerous or nutritionally poor. AAFCO explains that ingredient names have defined meanings; the label term should be considered alongside the food’s complete ingredient list and nutritional adequacy statement, not used as a stand-alone quality verdict.
BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, colors, carrageenan, and other additives
These names and categories are sometimes singled out in ingredient lists, but the sources cited here do not establish that every use or exposure is harmful to cats. A name that sounds synthetic is not proof of danger, just as “natural” is not proof of safety. FDA says the same safety standard applies to ingredients regardless of whether they are natural or artificial. Its overview of food ingredient types explains that distinction.

How to assess a cat food label
Read ingredient order for what it tells you
FDA requires ingredients to be listed by common or usual name in descending order of predominance by weight, subject to some regulatory exceptions that allow collective names. The order tells you relative weight in the food; it is not a direct ranking of nutritional quality. An ingredient high on the list does not, by itself, determine whether the diet is appropriate. See FDA’s labeling guidance.
Find the nutritional adequacy statement
Look for a statement that the food is “complete and balanced” for a stated life stage. FDA explains that this means the food is intended to provide balanced nutrition when fed as the sole diet. Treats and supplements are generally not intended to serve as a cat’s sole food. Check that the stated life stage matches your cat, and seek veterinary guidance for a cat with a health condition or special dietary needs. See FDA’s explanation of “complete and balanced” pet food.

When to ask a veterinarian
Talk with your veterinarian before making a major diet change, or if you suspect a food is causing a health problem. Individual needs vary, and a symptom or suspected reaction cannot be reliably diagnosed from an ingredient list alone. FDA likewise advises consulting a veterinarian about individual food and health questions.
