Nightjars do respond to the Moon, but not as if every event in life were set by a rigid lunar timer. In the species and places studied, moonlight changes how long birds forage, whether they build or conserve energy, and when some migration and breeding events occur. The cycle is an important recurring influence that works alongside moth and other prey availability, wind, weather, and seasonal demands.
The best evidence comes from three different birds: European nightjars tracked between Europe and southern Africa, red-necked nightjars studied in Spain, and eastern whip-poor-wills in Ontario. Their results overlap in showing lunar effects, yet they measured different life stages and cannot be treated as one universal rule for every nightjar.

What the “29-day clock” really means
The lunar cycle used in the nightjar studies is approximately 29.54 days. That is the analytical period used by the authors of a 2019 study, not a biological stopwatch that resets every 29 days for every bird. Moonlight changes predictably through new moon, waxing phases, full moon, and waning phases, giving a nocturnal predator a repeating pattern of brighter and darker nights.
Nightjars are mainly nocturnal or crepuscular insect-eating birds. Their flight activity is tied to opportunities to find prey, but the amount of usable light is only one part of that opportunity. A bird may also have to respond to prey abundance, cloud, rain, temperature, wind, migration costs, breeding demands, and the need to protect or restore energy reserves.

“Whole life” is therefore best understood as a useful metaphor for a recurring environmental influence. Current evidence does not show that lunar phase independently dictates every nightjar activity, annual event, or physiological process.
How moonlight changes a nightjar’s nightly routine
Brighter nights can extend aerial activity
In a 2019 study of European nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus), researchers combined GPS, geolocation, and multisensor data from 39 birds. The instruments recorded flight and movement patterns during the birds’ annual movements between northern European breeding areas and southern African wintering grounds.
On the most moonlit nights, the measured daily duration of activity presumed to be foraging was almost 2.5 times longer than on dark nights without moonlight. More light may make it easier for a nightjar to detect, pursue, or orient toward flying insects, allowing a longer period of active searching.

The tags recorded movement that researchers interpreted as presumed foraging; they could not prove that every recorded local flight was a feeding attempt.
Dark periods can create an energy shortfall
A 2026 study of red-necked nightjars (Caprimulgus ruficollis) in Doñana, southern Spain, used long-term field data and tracking to examine the connection between lunar conditions, daily activity, energy reserves, and annual timing. Its results link moonless periods with energy deficits and with synchronized energy-conservation responses.

In practical terms, a sequence of dark nights can reduce the time or success available for feeding. A bird then has to spend less, save more, or alter the timing of costly activities. The study associates those energy effects with migration and reproduction, while reporting no corresponding lunar association for molt.
The Doñana result is about red-necked nightjars in that study system. It should not be converted into a claim that every nightjar loses the same amount of energy during every new moon.
What the tracking studies found about migration
European nightjar flights peaked 11 days after full moon
In the European-nightjar study, tracked migratory flights reached a population-level peak 11 days after the full moon. This timing falls in the waning part of the lunar cycle, when nights are becoming darker after the brightest phase.
The pattern does not mean that each bird departs on day 11. Individuals varied, and the authors discuss wind and other events as influences on departure. A bird may wait for favorable winds, delay because of local conditions, or leave at a different point in the cycle while still contributing to the population pattern.
The study also could not connect departure dates precisely to each bird’s feeding success or daily fuelling rate in relation to moon phase. The lunar association is therefore evidence of timing, not proof that the Moon alone triggers migration.

Why a departure peak after full moon could make sense
A nightjar preparing for a long flight needs enough stored energy and a safe weather window. Brighter nights before and around full moon may provide more opportunities for activity, while a later departure may coincide with a combination of accumulated reserves, seasonal readiness, and suitable winds. This is an interpretation of how the factors can fit together, not a claim that one mechanism has been proven for every individual bird.

What the evidence says about reproduction and molt
Reproduction can be linked to lunar conditions through energy
The 2026 red-necked-nightjar study associated lunar conditions and the resulting energy balance with the timing of reproduction. Reproduction is energetically expensive, so a bird that has experienced poor feeding conditions during moonless periods may conserve resources or shift when it undertakes breeding-related activity.
A separate 2018 study of eastern whip-poor-wills (Antrostomus vociferus) in Ontario examined breeding timing as a possible balance among moonlight, prey abundance, weather, and life-history constraints. That work found evidence that food availability and other conditions matter. It did not establish a universal rule that a particular lunar mismatch always reduces reproductive success.
These findings should be kept species-specific. Eastern whip-poor-wills are not European or red-necked nightjars, and a breeding pattern in Ontario cannot be used as a direct measurement of a Spanish nightjar population.

Molt is not supported as a lunar-timed event in the recent study
The red-necked-nightjar study reported lunar associations with migration and reproduction, but not molt. That negative result matters: it prevents the “lunar clock” idea from being stretched to every annual event. The available evidence supports a selective influence on parts of the annual cycle rather than a complete lunar schedule for all physiology.
Three species, three kinds of evidence
| Species and setting | What was measured | Main lunar result | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| European nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus), migration between northern Europe and southern Africa | Flight and movement from GPS, geolocation, and multisensor tags on 39 birds | Presumed daily foraging activity was almost 2.5 times longer on the most moonlit nights than on dark nights; migratory flights peaked 11 days after full moon | Local flight was presumed foraging, not directly observed feeding; individual departures varied; feeding success and fuelling rates were not measured precisely against moon phase |
| Red-necked nightjar (Caprimulgus ruficollis), Doñana, southern Spain | Long-term field observations and tracking of activity, energy reserves, and annual timing | Moonless periods were associated with energy deficits and synchronized conservation responses; energy effects were associated with migration and reproduction, not molt | Results come from this species and study site and should not be generalized to all nightjars |
| Eastern whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus), Ontario | Breeding phenology in relation to moonlight, prey, weather, and life-history conditions | Food availability and other environmental conditions help shape breeding timing; lunar mismatch and reproductive success are not a settled universal relationship | This is a different species and region from the nightjar tracking studies |
Why moonlight is only one part of the system
Prey availability can override a simple moon rule
Nightjars hunt insects, so the number and accessibility of prey can matter as much as the amount of light. The Ontario whip-poor-will study explicitly frames breeding timing as a balance involving prey abundance. A bright night with few insects may be less useful than a darker night with abundant prey.
Wind and weather alter travel decisions
Migration requires more than a favorable light level. Wind can make a long flight cheaper, safer, or more dangerous, and the European-nightjar authors identify wind and other events as influences on departure. Cloud and other weather conditions can also change how much moonlight reaches the ground or how easily a bird can fly and hunt.
Season and life-history priorities change the payoff
The same moon phase can have different consequences during migration, breeding, or wintering. A bird building reserves for a journey has a different energy budget from one feeding a chick or replacing feathers. This helps explain why the red-necked-nightjar study found associations for migration and reproduction but not molt.

How scientists infer lunar effects
Researchers compare activity and timing with the lunar phase across many nights or seasons, then test whether the pattern is stronger than expected from ordinary variation. Long-term field data can reveal changes in energy reserves and annual timing. Tracking devices add movement records over large distances and across habitats.

Those methods are powerful but not identical to watching a bird catch and eat an insect. In the European-nightjar study, GPS, geolocation, and multisensor records were used to identify activity presumed to be foraging. The researchers could not distinguish every kind of local flight, so the almost-2.5-times comparison should be read as a movement-based estimate, not a direct count of prey captures.
Association also differs from exclusive causation. If activity rises on bright nights, that does not prove moonlight is the only reason. Prey, temperature, wind, cloud, predators, and seasonal state may change at the same time. The strongest interpretation is that lunar conditions contribute to a linked set of ecological decisions.
Do nightjars “follow” the Moon?
They follow lunar conditions in the sense that their behavior and energy management respond to changing night brightness. The tracked European nightjars were active for longer on the brightest nights, and their migratory flights showed a delayed population peak after full moon. Red-necked nightjars showed energy deficits and conservation responses during moonless periods, with associations to migration and reproduction.
They do not follow the Moon like a compass that dictates one exact departure date or guarantees a breeding outcome. Individual variation and local weather remain important, and results differ among species.
What “a nightjar’s whole life” gets right—and wrong
What the phrase gets right
- The lunar cycle repeats on a roughly 29.54-day period used in the European-nightjar analysis.
- Moonlight can change the amount of nightly activity presumed to be foraging.
- Periods without moonlight can be associated with an energy shortfall and conservation behavior.
- Migration and reproduction can show lunar-related timing in the studied species.
What the phrase gets wrong
- There is no evidence that one lunar rule applies identically to every nightjar.
- The Moon does not independently control all life events.
- The European-nightjar numbers do not directly measure feeding success or apply to every species.
- The recent red-necked-nightjar study did not find a reported lunar association with molt.
What to remember
A nightjar’s month is shaped by a repeating light environment, but its life is not run by the Moon alone. The clearest quantitative result is from 39 tracked European nightjars: presumed daily foraging activity was almost 2.5 times longer on the most moonlit nights than on moonless nights, and migratory flights peaked 11 days after full moon at the population level. In Doñana, red-necked nightjars showed moonless-period energy deficits and conservation responses linked with migration and reproduction, not molt. Eastern whip-poor-wills in Ontario add a reminder that prey and weather can alter the relationship between moonlight and breeding.
Taken together, the studies describe lunar phase as a recurring environmental cue that interacts with energy needs and local conditions. That is a more accurate—and more useful—description than a literal 29-day program controlling every nightjar from hatchling to adult.
