The triad of care is a partnership among you, your pet’s primary-care veterinarian, and a veterinary specialist, with your pet’s needs at the center. You bring day-to-day observations and make care decisions; your primary veterinarian provides continuity and helps guide referrals; and a specialist contributes advanced expertise in a defined area. A referral adds another clinician to the team—it does not automatically mean your regular veterinarian is stepping away.
What each member of the care team contributes
You, the pet owner
You see your pet at home and can describe changes in symptoms, behavior, appetite, mobility, or quality of life. Your history of what has changed and when, plus details about treatments and medications, can help the veterinary team understand the situation. You also take part in decisions about care.

Your primary-care veterinarian
Your primary veterinarian provides routine and preventive care, knows your pet’s medical history, and can help identify when a problem calls for further evaluation. ACVIM describes primary-care veterinarians as important partners in coordinating care with specialists: ACVIM’s overview of primary-care veterinarians.

A specialist has advanced training and expertise in a particular discipline. ACVIM lists specialty areas such as cardiology, neurology, nutrition, oncology, and internal medicine. The appropriate expertise depends on the clinical question, so discuss possible referrals with your primary veterinarian. See ACVIM’s guidance for animal owners.

What a referral changes—and what it doesn’t
A specialist may be considered when a diagnosis remains unclear, symptoms are not improving, advanced testing is needed, or a condition may benefit from specialized treatment or management. A referral is not, by itself, proof that a condition is severe. It is a way to bring relevant expertise into the decision-making process.
Who performs tests or treatment and who manages follow-up can vary by case. The specialist may take the lead on a particular question, your primary veterinarian may continue ongoing care, or both may share responsibility. Ask how the clinicians will communicate findings and recommendations, and who will coordinate the next steps. For more on referral relationships, see VetSpecialists’ explanation of referral relationships.

- Monitor and assess a wide range of patients and detect normal and abnormal sounds and rhythms
- Useful in non-critical care environments such as a medical office, general ward, OB/GYN, ambulatory clinic or urgent care
- More than twice as loud* as the next leading stethoscope. *Based on tests against globally-available comparable stethoscopes in an equivalent class using recorded heart sounds with diaphragm.
- Allows you to more reliably and consistently hear heart sounds at lower frequencies (below 120Hz*) like Korotkoff sounds, Mitral Stenosis and S3 and S4 Gallops when compared to other leading stethoscopes. *Based on tests against globally-available comparable stethoscopes in an equivalent class using recorded heart sounds with diaphragm.
- Weighs less** than other stethoscopes. ** Based on published weights of globally-available comparable stethoscopes in an equivalent class.
Prepare for the specialist appointment
Before the visit, ask your primary veterinarian what the referral is meant to clarify. Then contact the specialist’s clinic to confirm how records will be sent and what information would be useful. These are preparation prompts, not a required record format.
Recommended Free Tools
- Clarify the question. Ask why a referral is being considered and what the specialist is expected to help answer.
- Gather the history. Note when symptoms began, how they have changed, and any changes in behavior or quality of life.
- Bring treatment details. Prepare an accurate medication list and information about prior treatments. Ask whether the referring clinic will send test results and other records, or whether you should bring copies.
- Discuss the handoff. Ask how the specialist will share findings with you and your primary veterinarian, and who will coordinate ongoing care.
VetSpecialists also describes the value of sharing a pet’s history and information between clinicians in its guide to how owners, veterinarians, and specialists work together.

Talk about costs and payment before the visit
Ask the veterinary team what care options may be considered, what costs you might encounter, and what payment choices are available before the specialist visit. The likely costs depend on the evaluation and care proposed, so ask for an explanation of the expected steps rather than assuming a single fixed price. Early discussion can help you understand the choices and plan questions before decisions need to be made.

An American Animal Hospital Association article dated July 1, 2026, titled “The triad of care: Partnering for the life of the pet,” is labeled sponsored content by CareCredit. It reports that half of pet owners knew little to nothing about specialty care and had significant cost concerns; that cost was the number-one concern at a specialty/emergency veterinary hospital; that half of pet owners would be stressed by a specialty bill under $1,000; that 25% of specialty providers said owners had a realistic understanding of costs before the first visit; and that 86% of specialty practices wished referring veterinarians would do more to inform clients about specialty-care costs. The article’s result does not provide the underlying study’s date, sample, geography, or question wording, so these figures should be read as claims reported by that sponsored article—not as independently verified estimates for all owners or clinics, or as a guide to current prices.
