One of those regions includes Lop Nur, a former Chinese nuclear-testing site. That history does not show that living camels are radioactive or currently receiving harmful radiation. The species remains critically endangered, with poaching, habitat loss, disturbance and crossbreeding with domestic camels among its documented threats.
What animal drinks salt water in the desert?
It is the wild Bactrian camel, Camelus ferus. It is a distinct species—not simply a domestic Bactrian camel that has gone feral. In some areas where fresh water is absent, wild Bactrian camels have adapted to drink very saline water or salt-water slush that domestic camels will not drink, according to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS). The physiological mechanism behind this ability remains unknown, ZSL says.
This is a reported adaptation to particular harsh environments, not evidence that the animal can drink any seawater or that salt-water drinking explains its survival near Lop Nur.
Are wild camels radioactive from nuclear tests?
Lop Nur is both part of the wild camel’s habitat in China and a former nuclear-testing site. One Earth reports that nuclear testing there continued until 1996. That historical fact alone does not establish that today’s camels are radioactive, that they are currently exposed to harmful radiation, or that nuclear testing caused their ability to use saline water. The cited information does not document the animals’ radiation exposure.

Where do wild Bactrian camels live?
Their remaining range extends beyond Lop Nur. CMS lists locations in China’s Taklamakan and Lop Nur deserts and Mongolia’s Transaltai Gobi; ZSL describes the range more broadly as south-west Mongolia and north-west China. They live in arid landscapes with extreme seasonal temperatures. CMS notes that their shaggy coat changes seasonally.
These camels move across large areas to find scattered water and forage. CMS says satellite telemetry and GPS samples indicate very large home ranges, but movement patterns remain poorly understood because the animals are rare and sensitive to disturbance. A former test site is therefore one part of a wider, difficult-to-study range—not the whole habitat of the species.

How many wild Bactrian camels are left?
There is no reliable census, so published figures are estimates rather than a settled count. The figures below come from different sources and should not be combined as if they were one survey.

Why is the wild Bactrian camel endangered?
CMS identifies poaching, habitat loss and human disturbance as pressures, including impacts linked to mining and infrastructure development. Roads and other linear developments can disrupt movement across the open landscapes the camels depend on. Conservation efforts include reducing infrastructure impacts and maintaining landscape connectivity.
ZSL also identifies habitat degradation, climate-linked desertification and hybridisation with domestic Bactrian camels. Crossbreeding matters because it threatens the integrity of a distinct wild species. These pressures compound the challenge of protecting an animal that ranges widely in remote places and depends on intermittent water and forage.

What does the camel’s survival actually tell us?
The wild Bactrian camel is adapted to a severe desert environment, including the ability reported by CMS to drink very saline water where fresh water is unavailable. But that adaptation should not be confused with proof of immunity to contamination or radiation. Its continued survival is also not evidence that its population is secure: the species is critically endangered, estimates remain uncertain, and its habitat and movements face ongoing pressures.
