If your cat is slipping, struggling to turn, hesitating before jumps, avoiding stairs, or having trouble entering the litter tray, make the routes and everyday resources easier to reach—but arrange a veterinary assessment for new or worsening changes. Home adjustments can support comfort and access; they do not diagnose or treat the underlying cause.
Start by noting what has changed
Pain and other health problems can affect how a cat walks, balances, jumps, grooms, plays, and uses the litter tray. Changes may be subtle. The FDA lists reduced activity, changes in attitude or grooming, eliminating outside the litter pan, and difficulty jumping among possible signs of feline osteoarthritis. Those signs do not establish a diagnosis: ask your veterinarian to assess new or worsening mobility or balance problems.
Before the appointment, note the specific task that is difficult—such as slipping while turning, pausing at a step, or struggling to get into the tray—and when it happens. The FDA explains, “This is why your observations about your cat’s activity level and behavior at home are important, so your veterinarian has the best picture of your cat’s overall health.” FDA guidance on osteoarthritis in cats
Make walking routes less slippery
Start with the paths your cat uses most: between resting places and food or water, between the bed and litter tray, and toward favored rooms or perches. Rugs or non-slip gym mats can add traction on slick floors, as recommended by International Cat Care and the 2024 ISFM/AAFP consensus guidelines.

- Choose a surface that lies flat and stays in place when your cat walks or turns on it.
- Check that edges do not curl or create a trip point, and that the route remains wide enough for your cat to move comfortably.
- Clean traction aids as needed and check regularly that they have not shifted.
The goal is a stable, predictable route, not covering every floor. A loose mat that slides underfoot may create a new hazard, so watch how your cat uses each change.
Help your cat reach favorite places
If your cat still wants to reach a bed, couch, or favored viewing spot, offer a route that matches its ability and the available space. The FDA recommends ramps or steps to help cats reach high places; the ISFM/AAFP guideline also notes that steps, ramps, or furniture can help with access.

- Use a stable ramp or steps with secure footing and an approach your cat can manage.
- Intermediate furniture may help create a gradual route, provided it cannot tip or slide.
- Consider a lower resting or viewing place if your cat avoids the aid or cannot use it confidently.
There is no universally established ramp angle, ramp length, or step height for every cat. Let your cat’s comfort and observed use guide the setup rather than forcing a particular design.
Make the litter tray easier to enter and reach
Choose a tray with at least one low side or doorway and enough interior room for your cat to turn. Where space allows, the 2024 ISFM/AAFP guideline recommends a tray 1.5 times the cat’s length from nose to the base of the tail; International Cat Care also gives 1.5 times the cat’s length as a minimum.

- Put the tray in a safe, quiet, accessible place near the areas your cat uses most.
- If stairs are a barrier, provide a tray on each relevant floor rather than requiring an unnecessary climb.
- Where possible, keep familiar litter and observe whether your cat can enter, stand, turn, and leave comfortably.
Some cats with degenerative joint disease may find pellet litter painful to stand on, according to the ISFM/AAFP guideline, but preferences differ. Persistent house-soiling or straining calls for veterinary advice, not just a tray or litter change; a change in toileting can have medical, pain-related, or stress-related causes.
Keep food, water, and rest within easy reach
Place food and water where your cat can get to them without a difficult climb. If stairs limit access, consider stations on the floors the cat uses. A modestly raised bowl may help some cats avoid a painful crouch, but test whether your individual cat uses it comfortably rather than assuming a particular height is best. The FDA also lists raised food and water bowls and soft bedding among possible environmental changes for cats with osteoarthritis.

After making a change, observe whether your cat uses it, moves confidently, and can reach the resource without avoiding the route. Check that mats, furniture, steps, and ramps remain stable. If your cat avoids an adaptation or continues to struggle, try a simpler route or different location and discuss the difficulty with your veterinary team. Ask for advice specific to your cat’s mobility, exercise, grooming, nail care, and pain management. Environmental changes support access; they are not a substitute for veterinary care.
