A wobbly cat needs a veterinary assessment: wobbliness, or ataxia, is a sign of impaired coordination, not a diagnosis. While you contact your veterinarian, keep your cat quiet, block stairs and other fall hazards, and use a sturdy carrier for transport. The right treatment and longer-term home care depend on the cause.
What does “wobbly” mean in a cat?
Veterinarians use the term ataxia for incoordination affecting a cat’s limbs, head, or body. It can arise from problems involving the spinal cord or sensory pathways, the vestibular system that helps control balance, the cerebellum, or other conditions such as metabolic problems. Causes range from injury and inflammation to inner-ear disease and developmental conditions. A cat’s gait alone cannot tell you which one is responsible.
The pattern can help a veterinarian decide what to investigate. Head tilt or unusual eye movements may occur with vestibular problems; exaggerated limb movements or head tremors may occur with cerebellar problems. When should you contact a veterinarian?
Contact your veterinary practice for advice about new balance problems, particularly if they began suddenly, are getting worse, or occur alongside other concerning changes. Vestibular signs can sometimes reflect a serious underlying problem. Do not assume that a cat is safe to monitor at home simply because it is still eating or able to walk.
If your cat has had an accident or appears seriously unwell, call an emergency veterinary hospital for instructions. Keep movement to a minimum while arranging help, especially if trauma or neurologic signs may be involved. There is no single safe waiting period for every wobbly cat; the urgency depends on the cat’s overall condition and the cause.

How to make your home safer while arranging care
- Set up a quiet, confined space. Keep your cat in a calm area where you can supervise it and limit unnecessary movement.
- Block stairs and elevated spots. Prevent access to stairs, balconies, counters, and furniture the cat might try to climb or jump from.
- Reduce obstacles. Keep the immediate area clear so your cat is less likely to trip or collide with objects.
- Call before giving treatment. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions. Do not give medication unless the veterinarian directs you to; the appropriate treatment depends on the underlying cause.
Environmental safety is supportive care, not a treatment for the condition causing the wobbliness. How to transport a wobbly cat safely
Use a sturdy cat carrier or suitable sturdy box. A carrier with a removable top can make it easier to place the cat inside without forcing it through a small door. Keep the cat’s movement as limited as you can, and call the veterinary hospital for advice if you are unsure how to handle an injured, distressed, or very unsteady cat. What to expect at the veterinary visit
The veterinarian will use your cat’s history and examination to guide the next steps. For suspected vestibular dysfunction, an assessment may include a physical and neurologic examination and an examination of the ears with an otoscope. Further evaluation depends on the findings and the suspected cause.

Treatment is cause-specific. Some cats may need supportive care, including help with feeding or fluids, while other care may address pain or nausea when appropriate. What if the cat has been wobbly since kittenhood?
A lifelong, non-progressive wobble that became noticeable as a kitten begins moving can have a different explanation from a new or worsening balance problem. Cerebellar hypoplasia is one possible cause: disruption of cerebellar development can become apparent when kittens start moving, and the condition is described as non-progressive. It is not a general label for every wobbly cat, and only a veterinarian can assess an individual animal. A change in a previously stable cat should not be assumed to be cerebellar hypoplasia.
