To adopt a cat, start by checking the shelter’s current adoption instructions, then bring the items it requires—usually a photo ID and a secure carrier—and prepare a quiet room at home. The application, screening, fees, and timing vary by organization, so call or check its website before you go. ASPCA puts it plainly: “Every animal welfare organization will have their own unique adoption process, fees and parameters.”
Where to find a cat to adopt
Search local animal shelters and cat rescues, or use adoption listings such as Petfinder and Adopt a Pet to find cats in your area. Listings help you identify a possible match, but the organization caring for the cat is the authority on its availability and adoption rules. Review that organization’s current adoption page or call before making a trip.

What to bring to the shelter
- Government-issued photo ID. Some shelters require it. The ASPCA’s New York City Adoption Center, for example, requires valid government-issued photo identification; check the selected shelter’s rules.
- A secure cat carrier. Plan to transport the cat in a carrier, not loose in a vehicle or in your arms. ASPCA NYC requires a secure carrier for adopted cats and kittens. Petfinder’s cat checklist identifies a hard-sided carrier as a needed item; verify what your shelter accepts.
- Proof of address or housing permission, if relevant. ASPCA NYC says proof of current address may be requested in some cases. If you rent or live in housing with pet rules, check your lease and ask the shelter whether it needs any documentation.
- Anything else the shelter specifies. Ask whether household members should attend, whether records about current pets are useful, what payment methods are accepted, and whether an appointment is required. These are not universal requirements.
Before setting out, confirm the cat is still available, the shelter’s hours and appointment policy, and whether you can complete an adoption that day. Some organizations offer same-day adoptions; others need more time. At ASPCA NYC, same-day adoption is offered, but walk-in waits may exceed an hour. That is a local example, not a general expectation.

The exact order differs, but adoption commonly involves finding a cat, reviewing the organization’s requirements, submitting an application or inquiry if required, discussing whether the cat fits your household, completing any meeting or screening, signing paperwork, paying the fee, and taking the cat home in a secure carrier. Some organizations complete these steps in one visit; others take longer, and application response times depend on their procedures and workload.

Prepare for a conversation about fit
Think through who lives in your home, whether anyone has allergies, what your daily schedule is like, how often you travel, and whether your home can accommodate the cat’s needs. Consider how a cat might get along with children or resident pets, and who will be responsible for daily care. These questions help you and the shelter discuss a suitable match; they are not a list of screening rules used by every organization.
Ask about the cat’s needs and records
Ask what the shelter knows about the cat’s temperament, medical history, current food, and any follow-up care. Request the available records to share with your veterinarian. If you already have pets, ask how best to introduce them and whether the organization can advise on the particular cat.

Adoption fees and what they cover
Fees range from no fee to several hundred dollars, depending on the organization and the individual animal. They can help pay for the adopted cat’s care and support care for other animals. Do not assume all fees include the same veterinary procedures, supplies, or services: ask what is included for the specific cat and whether any costs remain.
Useful questions include whether the cat has been spayed or neutered, which vaccinations and parasite treatments it has received, whether it has been microchipped, and what medical records or follow-up recommendations are provided. Petfinder notes that this care is often included in adoption fees, but the exact inclusions depend on the organization.

For context only, Petfinder’s fee explainer, updated February 10, 2023, gave illustrative estimates of $50–$100 for a veterinary wellness visit and exam; $150–$300 for spay/neuter; $20–$30 per dose for distemper vaccination, listed as two doses; $15–$25 for rabies vaccination; $30–$50 for a feline leukemia/FIV test; $50–$200 for flea/tick treatment; $50 for a microchip; $20–$50 for deworming; and $5–$10 for a collar and identification tag. Its illustrative combined total was $425–$880, while noting few shelters or rescues would charge that full total as an adoption fee. These are dated estimates, not a current local price list or a prediction of your costs.
A local example: ASPCA NYC
The ASPCA New York City Adoption Center page lists a suggested $150 adoption fee and a $40 carrier purchase or rental charge. It also says adopters must be at least 18 and bring valid government-issued photo ID and a secure carrier; proof of address may be needed in some cases. These details apply to that center, not shelters nationwide, and fees or policies can change. Confirm them with the center before visiting.

Prepare your home before pickup
Set up a quiet room where the cat can settle without having to explore the whole home immediately. Have these basics ready:

- A litter box, litter, and scoop
- The food the cat is already eating
- A scratching post and a few toys
- A secure, calm place to rest
Petfinder recommends keeping the cat on its current food for a week or two before discussing a change with a veterinarian. Ask the shelter what food the cat has been eating so you can avoid an abrupt switch. Before the cat arrives, secure cords, doors, and windows, and remove or block access to hazardous plants and other household dangers.

What to expect in the first days
A newly adopted cat may hide, explore cautiously, or need time before approaching people. Keep the home calm and follow a steady routine. Let the cat observe and explore at its own pace; do not force contact or introductions with resident pets. Give resident animals and the newcomer separate space, and keep their toys apart while they adjust.
ASPCA’s 3-3-3 guidance describes the first three days as potentially overwhelming, the next three weeks as a settling period, and the first three months as continued adjustment. It is a broad guide, not a timetable every cat will follow. Some settle quickly; others need more time. Arrange a veterinary appointment shortly after adoption and bring the records supplied by the shelter so the veterinarian can advise on any follow-up care.
