How to Apply Flea and Tick Treatment to a Dog or Cat Safely

Use only a flea and tick treatment labeled for your pet’s species, age, and weight. Follow the label, prevent pets from licking treated areas, and contact a veterinarian if a reaction occurs.

Use only a flea and tick treatment labeled for your pet’s species, age, and weight, and follow that product’s label exactly. Never use a dog product on a cat or a cat product on a dog. For topical treatments, apply to one pet at a time and keep pets from licking or grooming each other until the product dries—or longer if its label says so.

Before applying any treatment

  • Check the species, age, and weight limits. Confirm the label explicitly allows use on this pet, at this age and size, and use only the stated dose. Do not use a product on a puppy or kitten unless its label permits it.
  • Read the full label and package insert. Check the application site, dosing interval, bathing restrictions, and any warnings. Read them again even if you have used the product before; directions vary by product and formulation.
  • Ask a veterinarian when the pet has added health risks. Get advice before treating a pet that is weak, old, ill, pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or has reacted to a similar product before. Discuss medical history when considering an isoxazoline product.
  • Use the product only as labeled. Do not split or adjust an applicator unless its instructions expressly say to do so. Do not put a household or yard pesticide on an animal unless its label specifically directs that use.

If directions are unclear, contact the veterinarian or product manufacturer before applying it.

Never use a dog treatment on a cat—or the reverse

Dog and cat products are not interchangeable. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that some pesticides are more toxic to one species than another and says never to apply dog products to cats or vice versa. A dog-only permethrin spot-on label accepted by EPA on March 28, 2024, warns, “DO NOT USE ON CATS – MAY BE FATAL.” That warning is specific to that product; follow the label for the product you have.

If a dog in a cat household receives a product with a cat warning, keep the cat away for the full period stated on that product’s label. For the cited permethrin label, that separation period is 24 hours. Do not treat 24 hours as a universal waiting period: other products may have different directions.

How to apply a topical treatment safely

  1. Prepare one pet at a time. Have the product and its instructions ready, and make sure the dose and application site match the animal’s label.
  2. Apply only as directed. Spot-on products, sprays, shampoos, and collars have different methods. Follow the specific label rather than assuming one product’s application instructions apply to another.
  3. Prevent licking and grooming. Keep the treated pet apart from other animals until the product is dry, and honor any longer separation period on the label. This prevents pets from licking the application site or ingesting product while grooming one another.
  4. Wash your hands. Wash with soap and water after application, or use protective gloves. Keep the product away from food, children, and objects that may go into a person’s mouth.

Oral products have different directions from topical products. Use the route, dose, and timing on the label; do not apply topical instructions to an oral treatment.

If a puppy or kitten is too young for treatment

Do not use a product outside its labeled age or weight limits. The FDA suggests using a flea comb to remove fleas and eggs from a puppy or kitten that is not yet eligible for a labeled treatment. Use a tick remover for an attached tick, and ask a veterinarian about an appropriate prevention plan.

Signs of a reaction and what to do

Possible signs include skin redness or irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, poor coordination, an unusually depressed appearance, or seizures. If you suspect a reaction, contact a veterinarian promptly. Do not give another dose or improvise another treatment.

  • If the product is a collar and the pet reacts, remove the collar immediately.
  • EPA advises bathing the pet with mild soap and rinsing with abundant water. The FDA notes that a veterinarian may recommend immediate bathing depending on the product, so call for advice promptly and follow the product-specific guidance.
  • Keep the packaging and applicator. They provide the product name, directions, and contact details that can help the veterinarian assess the exposure.

Isoxazoline flea and tick products are considered safe and effective by the FDA, but this drug class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions—including muscle tremors, poor coordination (ataxia), and seizures—in some dogs and cats. A seizure can occur even without a prior seizure history. Discuss the pet’s medical history with a veterinarian when choosing a treatment; these reported reactions do not mean most pets will experience them.

How to check whether a product is FDA-approved or EPA-registered

Check the package label rather than relying on a product name alone; the FDA warns that counterfeit pet pesticides are a problem. An FDA-approved animal drug label includes an FDA approval statement and a six-digit NADA or ANADA number. An EPA-registered pesticide label carries an EPA Registration Number. Keep the package after applying the product in case you need its instructions or contact information.
