To adopt a dog from an animal shelter, start by checking nearby shelters and rescue groups, then contact the organization about its application, meetings, fees, requirements, and timing. Before choosing, ask what is known about the dog’s health, behavior, and household fit. Prepare a safe place at home and a plan for daily care and veterinary follow-up.
1. Find nearby shelters, rescues, and adoptable dogs
Search the websites of local animal shelters and rescue groups, or visit in person. Pet-search sites can help you discover organizations and browse dogs: the ASPCA adoption tips point prospective adopters to Petfinder and Adopt a Pet. A dog may live at a shelter or in a foster home, depending on the organization.
Treat online listings as a starting point, not a guarantee that a dog is still available. Contact the organization directly to confirm availability and learn how it arranges meetings.
2. Decide what fits your household
Include everyone who will share responsibility for the dog. Think through your schedule, budget, home rules, and ability to provide exercise, supervision, training, and routine care. Consider resident pets, children, the home’s layout and security, and whether the dog’s known needs fit the time and resources you can offer.

When comparing dogs, weigh their known medical needs and likely care, activity level, behavior and social compatibility, and experience with children or other animals. A breed label or appearance alone cannot establish how an individual dog will behave or whether it is a good match.
3. Confirm the shelter or rescue’s process
Adoption procedures are set by each organization, not by one nationwide standard. The ASPCA explains that organizations have their own adoption process, fees, and parameters in its adoption guidance. Some may complete an adoption the same day; others take longer.

Ask the organization directly about:
- How to apply and what identification or other documents it requires.
- Whether you and the dog will meet before approval, and whether household members or resident pets should attend.
- Any home visit or other steps in its process.
- The current adoption fee and exactly what care or services it includes.
- Local licensing requirements, if applicable, and the expected timeline.
Requirements, fees, and timing can vary by organization and local rules. The sources do not establish a universal application form, minimum adopter age, document list, home-check policy, or fee range. Check current details with the shelter or rescue rather than relying on another organization’s rules.
4. Ask about the individual dog
Useful questions help you understand both what is known and what remains uncertain. Petfinder also offers a list of questions to ask when adopting a dog.

- What veterinary care has the dog received, and what care is due next?
- Are there known health needs or medications?
- What is known about the dog’s behavior, activity level, and comfort around children or other animals?
- Has the organization assessed the dog’s behavior? If so, what did it observe?
- Has the dog lived in a home or foster setting, and what routine is it used to?
- What food does the dog currently eat?
- What post-adoption help is available, and what is the organization’s return or relinquishment policy if the placement cannot continue?
Staff may not know a dog’s full history, especially if it has not lived in a foster home. A behavior assessment can offer useful information, but it cannot guarantee how the dog will respond in every home. Ask for clear answers without treating unknowns as proof of a problem or as information the organization is withholding.
5. Understand fees and included care before you commit
An adoption fee may help cover veterinary care, spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, food, and the organization’s ongoing work. Fees vary, and some organizations occasionally reduce or waive them through promotions. Ask for the current fee and a clear list of what is included for that particular dog.

Do not assume every adopted dog has already been sterilized, vaccinated, microchipped, licensed, or examined by a veterinarian. Confirm each item with the organization and check local licensing rules where you live. Plan for costs beyond the initial fee, including routine veterinary care, grooming, preventives, licensing where required, and possible emergencies.

Set up a quiet, safe resting place and dog-proof the areas the dog can access. Petfinder’s dog adoption checklist lists common basics including food and water bowls, a collar, leash, ID tag, crate, dog food, and toys; it specifies a four-to-six-foot leash. Choose items appropriate to the dog’s size and needs, and ask the organization what food the dog currently eats so you can keep the first days as familiar as possible.

Arrange veterinary care shortly after adoption and ask the shelter or rescue for guidance if you are unsure what follow-up is due.
7. Give the dog time to settle in
A new home brings unfamiliar sounds, smells, people, and animals. The ASPCA guidance on adapting to a new home recommends patience, a routine, calm direction, and giving an adopted pet time and space. Let the dog approach people at its own pace rather than forcing contact, and introduce resident animals thoughtfully.
You may encounter the “3-3-3 Guideline” as a general way to think about adjustment. It is not a scientific guarantee or a fixed schedule: individual dogs settle at different rates. Keep expectations flexible, and contact the organization or a veterinarian if health or behavior concerns arise.
