These steps support different life stages, but do not guarantee a sighting: host-tree use varies by region, and moths must already occur nearby.
Luna moths (Actias luna) have vestigial mouthparts and do not feed as adults. Focus on habitat for their caterpillars and cocoons rather than nectar plants or bait.
Choose a host tree suited to your region
Luna caterpillars eat leaves on living host plants. The best choice depends on which trees are documented as hosts locally, whether your site can support the tree as it matures, and whether you can preserve an existing tree. Check with a local extension office or native-plant nursery about planting suitability.

UF/IFAS and the Missouri Department of Conservation both describe host-tree use, with regional differences. Do not assume that every tree on a broad host list is equally suitable where you live. Preserving a suitable established host tree is a useful first step; planting a new one does not ensure moths will appear.

Protect host foliage
Caterpillars need access to leaves on their host tree. Avoid insecticide treatments on foliage you hope they will eat, including caterpillar-targeting products. University of Maryland Extension’s garden habitat guidance recommends maintaining plant resources for insects; UF/IFAS describes the luna moth’s host plants and life cycle.
Retain some leaf litter beneath host trees
Luna moth cocoons are associated with fallen leaves and the ground beneath host trees. UF/IFAS explains that cocoons spun among deciduous host leaves can fall to the ground as leaves drop; the Missouri Department of Conservation also describes cocoons among leaf litter.

Keep a manageable patch of leaves beneath suitable host trees where yard conditions allow. You do not need to leave every part of the yard unmanaged. Respect local fire and drainage needs while avoiding cleanup that removes all the leaf litter from this habitat area.
Reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting
Preserve a dark area near host trees by turning off unnecessary outdoor lights and limiting light spill. UF/IFAS reports that adult luna moths are strongly attracted to light, especially ultraviolet wavelengths, and notes concern that artificial light may interfere with mating. University of Maryland Extension’s luna moth life-cycle figure describes adult habitat as “dark habitat at night.” These sources support reducing excess light as a precaution, not as a quantified guarantee of more moths.

For lights you need, consider using a timer or motion sensor and directing light only where it is needed. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s guidance on nocturnal pollinators also discusses the importance of nighttime habitat.
Why flowers and bait are not the answer
Adult luna moths do not feed, so flowers cannot provide them with nectar. Flowers may support other nectar-feeding moths and nocturnal pollinators, but they are not a substitute for luna caterpillar host plants or cocoon habitat. Sugar water and fermented-fruit bait are not luna-specific attractants.

Will these steps bring luna moths to my garden?
No habitat change can guarantee a sighting. A suitable host tree and leaf-litter patch help provide habitat, but the species must occur nearby, and local conditions affect whether you see one. Check regional natural-history records or ask a local extension office whether luna moths occur in your area.

Should I leave leaf litter under trees?
Retaining some fallen leaves beneath appropriate host trees can help preserve cocoon habitat. Keep a manageable patch where yard conditions allow, rather than leaving every area unmanaged.
Do porch lights affect luna moths?
Luna moths are attracted to light, especially ultraviolet wavelengths. UF/IFAS notes concern that artificial light may interfere with mating, so reducing unnecessary light and preserving a dark area near host trees is a sensible precaution.
Will night-blooming flowers attract luna moths?
Not as a food source. Adult luna moths do not feed, though night-blooming flowers may benefit other nocturnal pollinators.
Does planting a host tree guarantee a luna moth sighting?
No. Host-tree choice and habitat needs vary by region, and the species must already occur nearby. Planting or preserving a suitable tree supports habitat but cannot promise a visit.
