1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo get rid of fleas, use a flea product labeled for your cat’s species, age, and weight, and follow its current label exactly. Treat every pet in the home with a product appropriate for that animal, vacuum and wash pet bedding, and continue prevention; an established infestation can take several months to control.
Ask a veterinarian to help choose a product, especially for kittens or cats that are sick, weak, pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or otherwise medically vulnerable. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat becomes ill or has a suspected reaction after treatment.
What to do first
- Look for fleas or flea dirt with a fine-toothed flea comb. A light surface beneath the cat can make dark specks easier to spot.
- Choose a flea product whose label specifically covers cats and your cat’s age and weight. Read and follow the full current label.
- Treat every pet in the household with a product labeled for that pet’s species and life stage. Do not use dog-product directions for a cat.
- Vacuum furniture, rugs, and carpeting, and wash pet bedding.
- Continue prevention as advised by your veterinarian and the product label. Do not give extra doses or combine products unless a veterinarian directs you to.
How to tell whether your cat has fleas
Look for live fleas or small dark specks of flea dirt in your cat’s coat. Fleas are not always easy to see, so not finding one does not rule out a problem. Itching and skin changes can also have causes other than fleas; ask your veterinarian if signs persist or you are unsure of the diagnosis.
How to check with a flea comb
- Place your cat over white paper or another light surface.
- Gently run a fine-toothed flea comb through the coat and check the teeth and surface for fleas or dark specks.
- Use the comb to remove what you find, but remember that combing alone does not control fleas in the home or replace an appropriate preventive.
- If you are uncertain whether your cat has fleas, consult your veterinarian.
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes flea combing as a way to look for fleas and flea dirt. A flea comb is also useful support for a kitten too young for a flea product, but ask a veterinarian what is safe for that kitten.

Why you need to treat the cat, other pets, and the home
Flea control requires attention both to the animals and to the places where they spend time. Cornell’s guidance explains that fleas must be removed from the cat and the environment. The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends treating every pet in the household to control an established infestation.
Vacuum furniture, rugs, and carpeting, and wash pet bedding. Follow veterinary advice about any product intended for the home or yard. Keep products intended for household or outdoor use off your cat unless the label explicitly permits use on cats.
How to choose a flea product for your cat
Products come in different forms, and there is no single choice that is right for every cat. Select a product based on its label and your cat’s individual circumstances, with veterinary guidance when needed.

| Health and other medicines | Ask a veterinarian about product selection for a sick, weak, older, pregnant, or nursing cat, or one taking medication. |

Use a product labeled for each animal’s own species and life stage. Treat every pet in the home as appropriate, including pets that do not appear itchy, and follow each product’s directions. Keep treated animals separated as directed so they do not groom product off one another.
Products are not interchangeable across species. If you have a kitten or another animal for which you are unsure about treatment, ask a veterinarian rather than adapting a product or dose yourself.

- Wash pet bedding. Clean bedding and other washable items where pets spend time.

How long flea control takes
An established infestation can take several months to control, according to CAPC. Seeing some fleas during that period does not automatically mean a product has failed. Continue the labeled prevention schedule and household cleaning, and ask your veterinarian to reassess the plan rather than applying an extra dose or mixing products on your own.
CAPC recommends year-round flea control for cats, tailored to the individual animal and geographic needs. Your veterinarian can help choose an approach suited to your cat and location.

Can I tell if my cat has fleas if I do not see any?
Not necessarily. Use a fine-toothed comb over a light surface to look for fleas or flea dirt. Fleas can be difficult to spot, and persistent itching or skin changes warrant veterinary assessment because other conditions can cause similar signs.
Can I use dog flea medicine on my cat?
No. Use only a product labeled for cats and follow its directions. Dog-product instructions are not a substitute for a cat product’s label.
