To bathe a puppy safely, make the room and empty tub familiar first, use comfortably lukewarm water and a gentle flow, clean with a pet-formulated product only when appropriate for the puppy’s age and skin, keep shampoo away from the face and ears, rinse until no residue remains, and dry gently. A very young puppy may need only a warm, damp washcloth rather than shampoo. The right timing and product depend on age, coat, lifestyle, health, and tolerance, so ask your veterinarian about skin disease, an incision, persistent irritation, or special shampoo needs.
Before you start: what a puppy bath should accomplish
A bath should remove dirt and odors without chilling, frightening, or stripping the skin. Puppies are still learning whether handling is safe, so the first sessions are as much about building trust as getting clean. Keep the process brief, use rewards for relaxed behavior, and stop before the puppy becomes overwhelmed. You can finish another day; forcing a long wash can make future grooming harder.

Bathing frequency is not universal. VCA says it depends on a puppy’s age, lifestyle, coat, and health. A puppy that rolls in mud needs different care from one with a clean, short coat, and a puppy with a skin problem may need a veterinarian-directed schedule. Do not assume that every puppy needs a monthly bath.
If the puppy has a rash, sores, intense itching, a recent surgery or other incision, or a diagnosed skin condition, contact the veterinarian before bathing. Some medicated shampoos are appropriate only for a particular diagnosis and should be used under veterinary direction.

Supplies and safety checks
- Pet-formulated puppy shampoo, if shampoo is appropriate for this puppy’s age and needs.
- A clean washcloth for the face and for very young puppies who need only spot cleaning.
- Several absorbent towels.
- Treats or a favorite calm reward.
- A nonslip mat or towel for a slippery tub or shower floor. This is optional, but VCA recommends considering a nonslip surface to help a puppy feel secure.
- A cup or handheld sprayer with a gentle setting, if you use one.
- A low-setting dryer only if the puppy tolerates its sound and airflow.
Place everything within reach before bringing the puppy into the bathroom. Never leave a puppy unattended in or near water, even for a moment. Keep electrical equipment away from standing water, and check that the room is warm enough for a wet puppy.
13 steps to giving your puppy a bath
1. Choose a calm time and gather supplies
Pick a moment when the puppy is not frantic, exhausted, or immediately due for a meal. Close the bathroom door or use another barrier so the puppy cannot dart away. Set out the shampoo, washcloth, towels, nonslip surface, treats, and any cup or gentle sprayer before you begin. Reading the shampoo label first prevents you from searching for directions with a wet puppy in your arms.
Use a product made for pets rather than human shampoo. Human formulas can be unsuitable for a dog’s skin. For routine care, look for a pet-formulated, soap-free product; VCA discusses dermatologist-formulated options and notes that moisturizing, antiseborrheic, antimicrobial, and antipruritic formulas serve different needs. A medicated formula should be chosen with veterinary advice, not by trial and error (VCA’s puppy-shampoo guide).
2. Let the puppy explore the dry bathing area
Before turning on water, place the puppy in the dry tub or shower area for a short exploration. Let the puppy sniff the surface and look around. Offer a treat or quiet praise when the puppy stands, sits, or investigates calmly. If the puppy tries to escape, step out, reset, and try a shorter visit later.
This introduction prevents the first encounter from being a surprise wash. Several brief, successful visits are more useful than one lengthy rehearsal.
3. Add a nonslip surface if the tub is slick
A smooth tub can make a puppy feel as though its feet are sliding away. Put down a nonslip mat or a securely placed towel before adding water. It should lie flat and remain stable; a loose, bunched towel can itself become a tripping hazard. Keep one hand available to steady the puppy, but do not grip tightly or pin the puppy down.
4. Brush the coat first when it needs it
If the coat has loose hair, dirt, or small tangles, brush before wetting it. The American Kennel Club recommends brushing before shampooing to remove loose hair, dirt, and debris (AKC’s shampoo guidance). Wetting a matted area can make it harder to work through and may pull at the skin.

5. Test comfortably warm, gentle-flowing water
Run the water before bringing the puppy into the stream. Test it with your wrist or hand: it should feel comfortably warm or lukewarm, never hot. A forceful spray can startle a puppy and make it difficult to keep water away from the ears and face.
If the sound of running water is frightening, fill a cup or basin first and use a quiet pour. Keep the pressure low and maintain a calm voice. The goal is steady wetting, not speed.
6. Wet the body gradually, starting at the torso
Support the puppy securely and wet the body a little at a time, beginning at the torso and moving over the back, sides, legs, and belly as tolerated. Keep the face dry for now. Do not spray directly into the ears, nose, or mouth. Watch the puppy’s body language: freezing, frantic scrambling, tucked posture, repeated lip licking, or attempts to climb out mean you should reduce the flow, pause, and reward calm behavior.
Do not hold the puppy under running water. A cup, a low-flow sprayer aimed at the body, or a wet washcloth gives you better control.
7. For a very young puppy, consider a warm damp cloth instead of shampoo
Not every young puppy needs a full shampoo bath. The AKC guide attributes this advice to international certified master groomer Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins: “Until the dog is 3 or 4 months old, all you really need to use is a warm wash rag.” Read that as a source-specific recommendation, not a universal veterinary rule. For a small dirty spot, a warm, damp cloth may be all that is needed.
The same AKC guide says shampoo and conditioner can wait until a puppy is at least three months old. Age, vaccination status, coat, medical history, and the reason for cleaning still matter, so ask your veterinarian if you are unsure. If the puppy is chilled, ill, unusually small, or has a skin problem, postpone a nonessential bath and get professional advice. Source: AKC beginner’s guide to bathing a puppy.
8. Apply pet-formulated shampoo only when appropriate
Once the body is thoroughly wet and shampoo is appropriate, use the amount and dilution specified on the label. Work it into the coat with your fingertips using slow, gentle motions. Avoid the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. Never substitute dish detergent or human shampoo.

| Situation | Product approach | Who should guide the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary dirt on a healthy puppy | A pet-formulated puppy shampoo, used according to its label, or a warm damp cloth for limited spot cleaning | The label and your veterinarian if the puppy has sensitive skin |
| Dryness or a coat needing extra moisture | A pet product formulated for moisturizing care | Veterinarian advice if dryness persists or the skin is inflamed |
| Itching, odor, redness, scaling, infection, or another diagnosed problem | A specific medicated or therapeutic product only if recommended | Your veterinarian; some medicated products should not be used without that direction |
VCA’s guidance on choosing puppy shampoo explains why the diagnosis matters: antimicrobial, antipruritic, antiseborrheic, and moisturizing products are not interchangeable. Stop and rinse if the product causes obvious discomfort, then contact the veterinarian.
9. Wash gently while protecting every opening
Massage the shampoo through the torso, legs, and tail with your fingertips. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, nails, and twisting the skin. Keep suds away from the eyes, nostrils, mouth, and ear canals. If a collar is on, remove it before washing so shampoo cannot collect underneath; keep the collar nearby for after the bath.
Never insert cotton swabs, fingers, or a stream of water into the ear canal. The outer ear can be wiped later with a damp cloth if needed, but a puppy with head shaking, discharge, pain, or a bad smell needs veterinary evaluation.

10. Clean the face with a damp cloth
Do not pour shampoo over the head. Instead, wet a clean washcloth with lukewarm water, wring it out, and wipe the cheeks, chin, and forehead carefully. Use a fresh part of the cloth for each area and keep the cloth away from the eyes, nose, mouth, and ear openings. For tear or food residue, soften the material with the damp cloth rather than picking at it.
Hold the muzzle gently only as needed; do not force the head back. If the puppy resists, leave the face for a later, shorter session and clean only what is necessary.
11. Rinse until no suds remain
Rinsing is as important as washing. Use a cup or gentle flow and repeatedly run clean lukewarm water through the coat until you can find no slippery residue or visible suds. Work from the back and sides toward the legs, keeping the face and ears protected. Leftover product can irritate the skin.
Feel through dense areas such as the chest, armpits, belly, and between the toes. These spots can hold shampoo even when the surface looks clear. If the puppy becomes distressed, pause with the water off, reward a calm breath, and resume at a slower pace.

Lift the puppy carefully, supporting the body, and wrap it in a towel. Blot and squeeze water from the coat instead of rough-rubbing, which can tangle hair and irritate skin. Replace a soaked towel with a dry one and keep the puppy in a warm, draft-free area until the coat is dry.

- Light Scent – Gentle coconut scent eliminates unwanted odors trapped deep in the coat

A dryer is optional, not required. If the puppy tolerates one, use the lowest comfortable setting, keep the airflow moving, and hold the dryer well away from the skin. Introduce the sound before aiming it at the coat. Stop if the puppy shows fear, overheating, or distress; finish with towels instead. The available veterinary and grooming guidance does not establish one universally correct drying method, so the puppy’s safety and tolerance take priority.
13. Finish with praise and a reward
Give the puppy a treat, praise, and a calm activity as soon as the bath ends. Keep the reward associated with cooperation, not frantic escape. Record what went well and what caused stress so the next session can be shorter or arranged differently.
Future practice can be as small as standing on the dry mat, hearing water run in another room, touching a paw, or feeling a damp cloth on the shoulder. Gradually combine these pieces. A puppy that learns bathing predicts safety and rewards is more likely to accept necessary hygiene later.

How to keep water out of a puppy’s ears
- Keep the head out of the water stream and wash the body first.
- Use a cup or low-flow sprayer aimed below the neck rather than a forceful spray.
- Clean the face with a wrung-out cloth instead of pouring water over the head.
- Do not put cotton swabs or other objects into the ear canal.
- After the bath, gently dry only the outer ear flap with a towel if it is damp.
If water or shampoo seems to have entered an ear and the puppy repeatedly shakes its head, scratches, cries, develops redness, or has discharge, call the veterinarian rather than using a human ear product.
When to postpone the bath or call a veterinarian
Skip a nonessential bath and seek advice when the puppy is ill, chilled, unusually lethargic, or too distressed to handle safely. Ask before bathing if there is a rash, open sore, persistent itching, strong odor, hair loss, suspected infection, or a recent incision. A veterinarian can determine whether bathing is safe and whether a specific therapeutic product is needed.
Contact the veterinarian promptly after a bath if the puppy develops facial swelling, hives, breathing trouble, severe redness, vomiting, or marked discomfort. Rinse any suspected irritating product from the coat with clean lukewarm water while arranging care, unless a veterinary professional tells you otherwise.

The puppy panics when the water starts
Turn the water off, support the puppy, and reward any calm behavior. At the next attempt, practice beside a dry tub, then with an empty tub, then with a damp cloth. Use a cup instead of a sprayer if the motor or spray sound is the trigger. Do not continue a full bath while the puppy is scrambling or trying to climb out.
The coat still feels greasy after rinsing
There may be product residue. Rinse again with lukewarm water, concentrating on the chest, belly, legs, and other dense areas. Next time, use the label’s amount and dilution rather than adding extra shampoo.

The puppy is shivering afterward
Wrap the puppy in a dry towel, move to a warm, draft-free room, and blot until dry. Avoid hot air or a hot heating source. If shivering does not settle as the puppy warms, or if the puppy seems weak or unwell, contact the veterinarian.
The puppy’s skin is red or itchy after the bath
Rinse thoroughly with clean lukewarm water if residue may remain and stop using that product. Persistent, spreading, painful, or severe signs require veterinary advice. Do not switch among medicated shampoos without a diagnosis.
The puppy has mats or a painful tangle
Do not yank or cut close to the skin while the puppy is wet and moving. Ask a veterinarian or experienced groomer to assess the coat, especially if the skin underneath is sore.

How do I bathe my puppy without making it afraid?
Make the dry area familiar, use a stable nonslip surface, keep water lukewarm and gentle, protect the face and ears, reward calm behavior, and end before the puppy is overwhelmed. Several short practice sessions are better than forcing one long bath.
When can I use shampoo on my puppy?
The AKC guide says shampoo and conditioner can wait until at least three months and quotes groomer Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins as recommending a warm wash rag for puppies younger than three or four months. That is attributed guidance, not a substitute for your veterinarian’s advice. Use a pet-formulated product only when it is appropriate for the individual puppy.
What shampoo should I use?
For routine cleaning, choose a shampoo formulated for pets and follow its label. If the puppy has itching, redness, scaling, odor, infection, or another skin concern, ask the veterinarian whether a moisturizing, antimicrobial, antipruritic, antiseborrheic, or other therapeutic product is suitable. Do not use human shampoo.
How often should a puppy have a bath?
There is no single schedule for every puppy. Age, lifestyle, coat, and health determine the need. Bathe when the puppy is dirty or when a veterinarian recommends a therapeutic schedule, rather than imposing a monthly rule.
Can I use a hair dryer?
Only if the puppy tolerates it. Use a low, gentle setting, keep the airflow moving and away from the skin, and stop at the first sign of fear or overheating. Gentle towel drying is sufficient when a dryer is upsetting.
