How to Be a Better Veterinary Client: 8 Practical Tips

Good veterinary care is a partnership: share specific observations, be open about concerns and limits, ask about options, and confirm the follow-up plan.

A good veterinary client helps the care team understand the pet, asks questions, and speaks honestly about concerns and practical limits. That does not mean agreeing without question or being able to follow every plan exactly. You know your pet’s daily life; the veterinarian brings clinical expertise and responsibility for medical judgment. Clear, two-way communication helps the team make recommendations that fit the case and your circumstances.

1. Start with the main reason for the visit

Tell the team what prompted the appointment and what you most want addressed. If there are several concerns, name the most urgent one first, then mention the others so the team can help set priorities. You might begin: “I’m here because she has stopped eating normally, and I’m also concerned about her drinking more.”

AAHA guidance encourages teams to ask about concerns early and use open-ended questions. It also notes that clients can feel overwhelmed during visits, so it is reasonable to ask for a moment to organize your thoughts. AAHA’s feline life-stage guidance and its canine collaboration guidance support this kind of two-way conversation.

2. Bring specific observations, not just impressions

Instead of saying only that your pet “seems off,” describe what changed and when. Useful details include how often something happens, how long it lasts, whether it is getting better or worse, and what was happening around the time it began.

  • When did you first notice the change?
  • How often does it happen, and for how long?
  • What has changed in eating, drinking, toileting, sleep, movement, or behavior?
  • Is there a pattern—for example, after meals, during walks, or at a particular time of day?

AAHA’s guidance gives specific questions about water intake and diet as examples of how focused details can be more useful than asking whether things are “normal.” A short written note or a safely recorded video of an unusual behavior may help you describe it accurately; ask the practice whether it would be useful to share one.

3. Share relevant history and context

Tell the team about past health problems, current medicines and supplements, diet, changes at home, and possible exposures when they may matter. If you do not know a dose or date, say so rather than guessing. Bring packaging or a current medication list if that is easier.

Your observations provide a view of the pet’s everyday life that a clinic examination cannot capture on its own. AAHA’s guidance on endocrine conditions specifically recognizes the value of an owner’s history alongside examination and testing: The Team Approach.

4. Be candid about what is difficult

Say if a medicine is hard to give, instructions are confusing, cost is a concern, or your household cannot manage a proposed schedule. These are relevant facts for planning care, not reasons to hide information or feel judged. If you have already missed doses or tried something different, explain what happened so the veterinarian can advise you safely.

Care options need to be considered in light of a client’s needs and abilities, as AAHA discusses in its 2026 oncology communication guidance. The same practical principle is useful in a conversation about any care plan: a plan the household cannot carry out needs to be discussed, not silently abandoned.

5. Ask for a recommendation and the tradeoffs

It is appropriate to ask what the veterinarian recommends and why, what alternatives are available, and what each option may mean for your pet. Depending on the case, you can ask about expected benefits, risks or burdens, likely outcomes, quality of life, costs, and what could happen if you wait or choose a different path. The answer will depend on your pet’s condition; there is no single decision rule that fits every case.

You can ask: “What do you recommend for my pet, and what are the main reasons?”

6. Listen, clarify, and check your understanding

Let the team finish explaining, then ask follow-up questions about anything that is unclear. If several instructions come at once, ask for them to be written down or explained one step at a time. Before leaving, it can help to repeat the plan in your own words: “So I give this medicine twice a day, call if the vomiting returns, and book a recheck next week—is that right?”

AAHA communication materials describe veterinary visits as two-way conversations and encourage reflective listening. A clear recommendation and an opportunity to ask questions make it easier to understand what the next step is; they do not remove your role in discussing whether that plan is workable.

7. Tell the team if your pet is fearful or stressed

Let the practice know ahead of time if your pet is frightened by travel, waiting rooms, handling, or other parts of a visit. Ask whether an appointment time, arrival arrangement, or other stress-reduction step may help. Follow the veterinary team’s advice about handling and preparation rather than trying an unfamiliar strategy on your own.

AAHA’s wellness-visit guidance recommends planning for anxious animals and using stress-reduction strategies under the team’s direction: Tips for Efficient Wellness Visits.

8. Agree on follow-up and report problems

Before the visit ends, confirm the next step, when reassessment is expected, and whom to contact if your pet changes or the plan is not working. If you are waiting for results or a referral, ask how and when the practice expects to update you. Contact the veterinary team if you cannot carry out the instructions or notice a change; they need that information to advise on what happens next.

AAHA’s referral guidance recommends discussing goals, reassessment points, and follow-up conversations when planning care: Section 2: Client Conversations Before a Referral.

What a good veterinary-client relationship means

Being a good client is not a character test or a promise to accept every recommendation. It means sharing what you know, raising concerns, and working with the veterinary team to understand a plan for your pet. The veterinarian remains responsible for medical judgments, while you contribute essential knowledge of the animal and make decisions in conversation with the team. AAHA describes the veterinarian-client-patient relationship as the basis for that interaction: AAHA’s VCPR overview.
