A good cat foster parent follows the rescue’s individual care plan, gives the cat a quiet and secure place to settle, and reports health or behavior changes promptly. Before pickup, agree on food, medication, veterinary care, emergency contacts, and introductions with resident pets. Foster care is temporary: the rescue and its veterinarian set the plan, and you carry it out rather than changing treatment or diet on your own.

What to arrange with the rescue before pickup

Foster programs differ in what they provide and what they expect from volunteers. Get the plan for this particular cat in writing or in a form you can refer to easily. Ask:

  • What is the cat’s age, known health history, and current veterinary status? Are there known exposure concerns?
  • What food and litter is the cat using, and should either change?
  • Is medication prescribed? Confirm the exact schedule and what to do if a dose is missed, refused, or vomited.
  • Who is the veterinary contact, and what is the approved process for routine concerns and after-hours emergencies?
  • Which costs and veterinary visits are authorized, and who supplies or pays for food, litter, a carrier, and other equipment?
  • What are your responsibilities for updates, adoption inquiries, and returning or transferring the cat?
  • What separation and resident-pet introduction rules apply to this cat?

Some organizations provide most supplies and arrange authorized medical care; others ask foster parents to provide food or litter. Confirm the details with your own program rather than assuming another rescue’s policy applies. See SPCA of Northern Virginia’s foster information and West Valley City’s foster-care guide for examples of organization-specific arrangements.

How to prepare a safe room

Start the cat in a quiet, secure indoor room, such as a spare room or bathroom. A smaller territory can make it easier to settle in and lets you monitor eating, litter use, and energy. Set up bedding, food and water dishes, a litter box, a scratching surface, and simple enrichment. Keep food and water away from the litter box where the room allows.

Before the cat arrives, secure cords, remove toxic or unfamiliar plants and breakables, and check windows, screens, doors, and other possible escape routes. Keep the cat indoors unless the organization explicitly approves a specific outdoor arrangement. Ask before buying supplies: the rescue may have equipment to lend or may require a particular food or litter. Cornell’s guide to choosing and caring for a new cat covers basic home setup and care.

How to help a foster cat settle in

Give the cat time to explore the room without pressure. Sit quietly nearby, speak gently, and let the cat approach rather than pulling it from a hiding place or insisting on being handled. Offer calm interaction and play at the cat’s pace, following any handling guidance from the organization—especially if the cat is fearful, recovering from illness, or caring for kittens.

Keep the initial routine predictable: offer the assigned food and fresh water, clean the litter regularly, and give medications exactly as instructed. Cornell advises making a food transition gradually and continuing some of the previous food during the change. Do not switch the foster’s diet or make other care changes without the rescue’s or veterinarian’s guidance; kittens and cats with medical needs may need a specific plan.

How long should I keep a foster cat separate?

Begin with separation from resident pets. A cat with an incomplete health history may carry germs even if it appears well, and a new arrival also needs time to settle. Cornell advises separating a cat of unknown health history from resident cats until a veterinarian has examined it. The veterinarian and foster organization should determine the plan for your cat.

There is no single quarantine period that applies to every foster cat. For example, SPCA of Northern Virginia describes a 10-day separation precaution for a new cat it has not already quarantined in its care. West Valley City advises 7–14 days before introductions in certain cases. Those are local program protocols, not a universal veterinary standard. Follow your organization’s timeline, and ask whether examination, testing, or other conditions must be met before contact.

How do I introduce a foster cat to my pets?

Do not move straight from arrival to face-to-face contact. Wait until the organization agrees the cat is ready and your resident animals can be kept safe under the plan. Introductions should be gradual and supervised; if either animal seems distressed or the interaction is unsafe, stop and ask the organization how to proceed.

  1. Maintain separate spaces. Keep the foster in its prepared room while health-history and settling-in requirements are addressed.
  2. Ask before starting introductions. Confirm that the foster’s health status, the resident pets’ health and vaccination status, and your rescue’s policy allow it.
  3. Use scent exchange first if approved. Follow the organization’s directions for letting pets become familiar with one another’s scent without direct contact.
  4. Move to controlled, supervised contact only when ready. Keep the contact manageable and follow the rescue’s guidance on pace and setup.

The right plan can differ for a shy adult cat, a nursing mother with kittens, a bottle-fed neonate, or a cat receiving medical rehabilitation. The AAHA/AAFP 2020 feline vaccination guidelines identify foster cats as a population with infectious-disease exposure considerations; vaccination decisions for an individual animal belong to its veterinarian and organization.

How to monitor health and when to contact the rescue

Notice and report changes rather than trying to diagnose them. A simple daily record can help you give the organization clear information:

  • Appetite and water intake
  • Urination and stool, including diarrhea or straining
  • Breathing, energy, and ability to stand and respond
  • Eye or nose discharge, injuries, or bleeding
  • Medication given and any difficulty administering it
  • Behavior changes, including hiding or unusual distress

The CDC lists sluggishness, diarrhea, abnormal breathing, and fluid from the eyes or nose among signs of illness in cats. Contact the foster organization promptly when you notice concerning changes, and use its approved veterinary pathway. Do not independently change medication or delay a recommended assessment.

If you see a sign that appears urgent, use the emergency contact and veterinary process your organization gave you; its instructions govern where to go and what care is authorized.

How to protect people and other animals

Use basic hygiene when caring for the cat and cleaning its space. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises: “Plan to change the litterbox daily and always wash your hands after.” Remove urine, feces, or vomit before cleaning and disinfecting the soiled area. Read the CDC’s guidance on cats and health for hygiene and illness-prevention advice.

If someone in your household is pregnant, immunocompromised, or a young child, ask a healthcare provider and the foster organization what precautions are appropriate for your household.

Why foster plans differ

A foster plan depends on the animal and the home, not just the fact that the cat is in foster care. Before agreeing to a placement, consider whether you can meet the cat’s needs while following the rescue’s instructions. Relevant differences include:

  • The cat’s age and whether it needs specialized care, such as bottle-feeding or support for a nursing litter
  • Known or unknown health and exposure history
  • The health and vaccination status of resident pets
  • The rescue’s separation, introduction, and veterinary policies
  • Whether your home can maintain separate spaces
  • Which supplies and authorized veterinary care the organization provides

Shelter protocols for vaccination and parasite control account for factors such as age and local risk; they are not a prescription for an individual foster cat. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s shelter-medicine guidance describes that broader shelter context. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions for the specific animal.
