Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCats may hide or carry toys because play taps into hunting behavior, because they want to keep a favorite object somewhere that feels safe, or because moving and stashing it provides stimulation. These are plausible explanations, not a proven motive for any particular cat. Toy stashing on its own is generally different from a cat hiding itself; a new increase in hiding, especially with other changes, is a reason to contact a veterinarian.
Why might a cat hide or carry toys?
Cats may bat, carry, or stash toys as part of ordinary play. A toy can invite stalking, chasing, catching, and carrying—behaviors related to hunting. A cat may also move a favored object to a place that seems secure, or stash and retrieve it for extra stimulation. No single explanation is established for every cat, and the behavior does not prove that a cat is saving “prey” for later. Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed guidance describes toy stashing as common play-related behavior and discusses several possible reasons.

Is it normal for cats to stash toys?
In many cases, yes. Merck Veterinary Manual identifies hunting, play, security, and exploration as normal feline behavioral needs. Its guidance is to make sure cats can engage in normal behaviors when preventing or addressing behavior problems. If your cat carries a toy to another room, tucks it under furniture, or returns to a hidden toy, and otherwise seems well, there is not necessarily a problem to correct.

Pay attention to the whole pattern rather than interpreting one toy’s location as a diagnosis. A change in how often your cat stashes toys may simply reflect a change in play or interest; the available guidance does not establish a specific cause from that change alone.

How to encourage safe play and enrichment
You do not need to stop toy hiding just because it looks unusual. If you want to offer more outlets for play and exploration, try options your cat actually enjoys and supervise play when a toy could be damaged or swallowed. Enrichment may meet some behavioral needs, but it is not proven to stop toy stashing.
- Offer chase-and-catch play. Use a toy that lets your cat stalk, chase, and pounce, and give the cat opportunities to catch it. Keep play supervised.
- Try foraging activities. Food-dispensing toys or puzzle feeders can provide an outlet for hunting and food-seeking behaviors. Choose a design that is appropriate for your cat and monitor its use.
- Use simple household items carefully. Cornell’s Feline Health Center notes that cardboard boxes, paper bags, and ping-pong balls can entertain cats without costly toys. Check items for hazards and supervise play.
For toy selection, avoid items with small pieces or string-like parts that could come loose and be swallowed. Monitor your cat so it does not consume non-food toys. Cornell’s cat-toy guidance covers toy safety and enrichment; Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA’s play guidance discuss play and food toys as ways to support feline behavioral needs.

When a cat hiding itself needs attention
Hiding a toy is not the same as withdrawing to hide. If your cat is hiding itself more than usual, particularly if the change is sudden or comes with other changes, contact a veterinarian for advice. Signs worth mentioning include eating or drinking less, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, or house-soiling. Hiding alone cannot identify the cause, so avoid diagnosing from the behavior.
