To befriend a nervous cat, make it feel safe and let it choose when to approach. Start by checking for health or recent changes, provide a quiet refuge, and build trust through calm, predictable, low-pressure contact. Do not pull a cat from hiding or force petting; progress may take days, weeks or months, and some cats may never enjoy cuddling or being handled.

1. Check whether fear is new or getting worse

If a cat has suddenly become fearful, is hiding more than usual, or has changed how it behaves, contact a veterinarian before assuming it needs socialization. Pain or illness can affect behavior, and hiding can also be a response to stress or anxiety. A recent move, frightening experience or change at home may provide context, but it does not establish the cause.

Possible signs of fear include running away, retreating to a hiding place, dilated pupils, flattened ears, cringing and cowering. These are clues to give the cat space, not a diagnosis. Cats Protection explains more about signs of cat stress.

2. Give a new cat a quiet place to settle

If the cat has just arrived, begin in a quiet room where it can explore without being overwhelmed. Keep food, water and a litter tray accessible, but do not place them directly beside its hiding spot. Keep the room calm and give the cat time to investigate at its own pace. See Cats Protection’s guidance on bringing a cat home.

DO NOT spray directly on your cat
  • CALMS YOUR CAT AT HOME: When sprayed directly on areas marked by your cat, FELIWAY Classic Spray helps promote calm and reduce spraying and scratching of those areas

3. Let the cat hide in a safe refuge

Hiding is a normal way for cats to cope. Offer a quiet, covered refuge—ideally somewhere elevated and stable—and leave the cat undisturbed there. A cardboard box can work; a purchased covered hideaway is optional, not essential. Choose a spot the cat can reach and leave freely, away from its food, water and litter.

Do not reach into the refuge, pull the cat out or repeatedly coax it to emerge. If constant checking or placing food directly at the hiding place seems to increase pressure, step back while keeping essentials available. If the cat is too shy to eat, Cats Protection advises moving the food bowl nearer and leaving the room. Its guidance on cats hiding covers settling-in and when to seek advice.

4. Keep daily life predictable

Feed and interact at roughly consistent times, and keep the environment calm. A steady routine helps the cat learn what to expect, while sudden approaches or repeated attempts to engage can make the room feel less safe. Let everyday care happen without making each visit a demand for contact.

5. Be present without asking for attention

Sit nearby and read, work quietly or speak softly. Avoid looming over the cat, approaching directly or staring. Let it watch you from its chosen refuge; being in the same room without trying to touch it is a useful step in itself.

6. Create positive associations without trapping the cat

When appropriate, offer a small treat or try gentle play with a wand toy that lets the cat keep its distance. Keep a clear retreat available. Do not use food or play to draw the cat into a situation where it cannot get away, and stop if it seems uncomfortable. Cats Protection recommends low-pressure approaches such as treats and play in its advice for shy cats.

7. Let the cat initiate contact and advance gradually

Wait for voluntary approaches. If the cat comes near, allow it to sniff before offering a hand. Try a brief stroke only if it remains comfortable, and pause rather than extending contact to see how much it will tolerate. If it retreats or shows fear, stop and return to an easier step, such as quietly sitting nearby.

Call a veterinarian if hiding increases, behavior changes, or you are concerned about eating, drinking or toileting. If medical causes have been ruled out and fear persists, consider seeking help from a qualified cat behaviourist.

How do I get a scared cat to trust me?

Give it control over distance and contact. A cat that can observe you, retreat when it wants, and approach without being grabbed has more reason to feel safe. Trust may show as staying in the room, eating while you are nearby or choosing to approach; it does not have to mean accepting a lap, cuddles or handling.

Should I try to coax my cat out of hiding?

No. Do not reach in, pull the cat out or keep coaxing it. Keep essentials accessible, reduce disturbance and allow it to emerge by choice. If it is too shy to eat, move the bowl nearer and leave the room; seek veterinary advice if eating, drinking or toileting worries you.

How long does it take for a shy cat to warm up to you?

There is no universal timetable. Cats Protection says building confidence may take days, weeks or months. Move at the cat’s pace rather than using a deadline or measuring success by how affectionate it becomes.
