After a dog gives birth, keep her and the puppies in a clean, dry, quiet whelping area, make food and fresh water easy for her to reach, and check the mother and litter every day. Watch her appetite, behavior, vaginal discharge and mammary glands; weigh each puppy daily, especially during the first week. Contact a veterinarian promptly about abnormal discharge, painful or swollen glands, poor puppy weight gain, or a mother who seems ill. Suspected eclampsia—with signs such as tremors, stiffness or seizures—is an emergency.

Set up a clean, calm recovery space

For the first days after whelping, the mother may be reluctant to leave her puppies. Keep fresh water and appropriate food close enough that she can reach them, and give her a clean, dry place to rest with the litter. Check the bedding regularly and remove wet or soiled material. Wash your hands before handling puppies or changing bedding, and keep the area clean without disrupting the litter more than necessary.

Keeping the nest dry is part of the daily routine, not a one-time task. Check for wet or dirty bedding and replace it when needed so the mother and puppies are resting on a clean surface. Make sure the mother can get to food and water without having to leave the litter for long. Her reluctance to leave the puppies may be normal for her situation, but it makes accessible food and water especially useful.

Observe the mother and puppies as a group and individually. Notice whether the mother is eating, drinking, resting and behaving as usual for her. Check that the puppies are nursing and are not persistently crying, cold, weak or unable to feed. These observations are not a substitute for a veterinary examination; they help you recognize a change and describe it clearly when you call.

A practical daily check

  • Replace bedding that is wet or soiled and keep the nest dry.
  • Refresh the mother’s water and make her food accessible.
  • Note her appetite, behavior and vaginal discharge.
  • Look at each mammary gland for changes in swelling, firmness, heat, color, pain or secretion.
  • Weigh each puppy and record the result so you can see the trend.
  • Check that every puppy is nursing and is not cold, weak or persistently crying.

A written record makes changes easier to spot than relying on memory. Note the date, the mother’s eating and behavior, any discharge or gland changes, and each puppy’s weight. Keep puppy weights associated with the individual puppy rather than recording only a litter total. If something concerns you, give the veterinarian the observations and when they began.

When you look over the litter, notice whether each puppy is nursing, not just whether some puppies appear to be feeding. A puppy that is not nursing, seems weak or cold, cries persistently, or fails to gain weight needs veterinary guidance. Recording which puppy is affected and when you first noticed the change can help make your call more useful.

Feed the nursing mother for lactation

Producing milk takes energy, and a nursing dog’s needs vary with factors including litter size and stage of lactation. VCA Animal Hospitals says a nursing dog can continue food formulated for gestation and lactation or eat an all-life-stages diet. Choose an appropriate complete diet and discuss the individual plan with your veterinarian; the right amount cannot be set reliably from a general rule alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At three to five weeks after whelping, a mother may need two to four times the calories of a normal, healthy adult dog, according to VCA. That is a possible need at peak lactation, not a fixed ration for every dog. VCA says energy needs decline toward normal by about eight weeks after delivery as puppies wean. A small or large litter, the mother’s condition and how well she can eat all affect what is appropriate.

These figures describe how needs can change over time; they are not an instruction to multiply every dog’s current serving by a set number. Ask the veterinarian who knows the mother about the right amount for her, especially if she is not eating well or you are unsure how much to offer. Keep fresh water available, since the mother should be able to drink while nursing and caring for the litter.

Choosing a feeding format

Option What to consider
Food formulated for gestation and lactation VCA identifies this as an option for a nursing dog. Follow a veterinarian’s advice on the amount and feeding schedule.
An all-life-stages diet VCA also identifies this as an option. Confirm that the food is appropriate and that the mother can eat enough to meet her needs.
Small, frequent meals or measured free-choice food Either format may be appropriate. Choose with veterinary guidance, taking the dog’s appetite and circumstances into account.

The important comparison is not a particular brand: it is whether the food is complete and appropriate for the life stage, whether its energy density and the dog’s appetite allow her to eat enough, and how much energy she needs given her litter and lactation stage. A feeding format that works for one mother may not suit another. Your veterinarian can help select the diet and amount rather than relying on a universal serving recommendation.

Small, frequent meals may be one reasonable format; measured free-choice feeding may be another. Consider the mother’s appetite and circumstances, and ask the veterinarian which approach fits her. Do not assume one method is best for every dog, and do not use a general calorie figure as a substitute for an individual feeding plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep water available. If the mother is not eating, cannot keep food down, seems unwell or is not caring for the litter, contact a veterinarian rather than trying to correct the problem by changing foods or adding supplements on your own. A mother who has not resumed eating within 24 hours after the last puppy should be discussed promptly with a veterinarian.

Do not add calcium without veterinary direction

Do not give calcium supplements on your own during pregnancy or nursing. VCA warns that excessive calcium intake can increase the risk of eclampsia, a potentially life-threatening condition. If you suspect eclampsia, treat it as an emergency rather than trying calcium or another home remedy.

In particular, do not treat signs such as panting, tremors or stiffness by guessing that calcium is needed. Suspected eclampsia requires veterinary assessment and treatment. Contact the veterinarian immediately if these signs develop, and follow the emergency advice rather than attempting to manage the condition at home.

Monitor the mother’s recovery

Check the mother’s appetite, behavior, mammary glands and vaginal discharge each day. She may be focused on the puppies and reluctant to leave them, but a change in her condition deserves attention. A mother who has not resumed eating within 24 hours after the last puppy, becomes ill, will not allow nursing, or develops painful or abnormal mammary glands should be discussed promptly with a veterinarian.

Pay attention to the whole picture, not just one observation. A change in appetite or behavior together with concerning discharge, or a mother who seems ill while her puppies are not nursing well, is worth describing to the veterinarian. Do not wait for a problem to become severe before asking for advice if you are concerned.

Understand postpartum discharge

The American Kennel Club describes postpartum lochia as discharge that may last three to eight weeks and vary in color from green to red or brown. That is the range given by the AKC, not a guarantee about what is normal for every dog. Pay attention to changes and to the mother’s overall condition, not color alone.

Foul-smelling discharge or discharge that is increasing is concerning and calls for veterinary attention. If you notice either, contact a veterinarian promptly and describe its appearance, odor and whether the amount is changing. Do not wait for the possible duration described by the AKC to pass if the discharge is worsening or the mother seems ill.

When describing discharge, be as specific as you can: its color, whether it has a foul odor, whether the amount is increasing, and when you first noticed the change. Color by itself is not enough to decide that the mother is fine, and the possible three-to-eight-week duration is not a reason to delay a call about worsening discharge or illness.

Check mammary glands once or twice a day

The AKC recommends checking the glands once or twice daily for changes in firmness or swelling, temperature, color, pain or secretion. Red or purple discoloration, heat, swelling, pain or abnormal milk warrants veterinary evaluation; these signs can indicate mastitis. Do not assume a painful or changed gland will resolve on its own. Contact the veterinarian and explain which gland is affected and what you have observed.

During each check, look for changes from what you have seen before. Note whether a gland feels firmer or more swollen, seems hot, has changed color, appears painful, or has abnormal secretion. Red or purple discoloration, swelling, heat and pain are reasons to seek veterinary evaluation, rather than signs to watch indefinitely without advice. If milk looks abnormal, mention that too.

The daily check is useful because you can tell the veterinarian when a change began and whether it has progressed. You do not need to diagnose mastitis yourself. Report what you see and ask how promptly the mother should be examined, especially if she seems ill or the puppies are not nursing.

Track puppy nursing and growth

Weigh each puppy daily, especially during the first week. Use the same scale and record each puppy separately so that you can follow individual trends rather than relying on the litter’s overall appearance. A scale is a practical tool for keeping those records; no particular model is required. Ask your veterinarian what weight gain is appropriate for the breed and litter. There is no single gain figure in the cited guidance that can safely be applied to every puppy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inadequate gain can be an early sign that a puppy is not receiving enough milk. A puppy that is weak, not nursing, cold, persistently crying or failing to gain weight needs veterinary guidance. Call the veterinarian with the puppy’s recorded weights and the timing of any signs. Do not wait for several days of poor growth before asking for advice.

Daily weights are more informative when each result is recorded against the same puppy and compared with that puppy’s earlier measurements. This makes it easier to notice a concerning trend even if the litter looks well as a group. Ask the veterinarian what gain is appropriate; breed and litter differences mean that a single number should not be used as a pass-or-fail rule for every puppy.

Look at weight records together with nursing and behavior. A low or concerning trend, a puppy that is not nursing, or one that becomes cold, weak or persistently vocal should prompt a call. Tell the veterinarian the puppy’s weight history and what else has changed, rather than waiting to see whether the puppy catches up without help.

If a puppy needs supplemental feeding, use a veterinary-directed plan and an appropriate puppy milk replacer and feeding equipment. Do not improvise a product or feeding method. Ask the veterinarian what to use, how to prepare it and how to feed that particular puppy; the right approach depends on the puppy’s condition and the reason supplementation is needed.

Do not choose an unverified product or change how you feed a puppy based on guesswork. A veterinarian can advise whether supplementation is needed and, if so, provide direction on the appropriate replacer and equipment. If a puppy is weak or not nursing, call for guidance rather than delaying while trying different feeding methods.

Recognize eclampsia and act immediately

Eclampsia can become life-threatening. Watch for restlessness, excessive panting, stiffness, tremors, weakness, muscle spasms, difficulty standing or seizures. If you see these signs, contact a veterinarian immediately. VCA’s instruction is: “If you suspect eclampsia is developing, prevent the pups from suckling and contact your veterinarian immediately.” Follow that emergency direction; do not attempt to diagnose or treat the condition at home with calcium.

When you call, say that the dog has recently whelped and describe the signs and when they started. If you suspect eclampsia, do not delay the call while waiting to see whether the signs settle. The veterinarian must assess and treat the mother.

Restlessness, excessive panting, stiffness, tremors, weakness, muscle spasms, difficulty standing and seizures are not reasons to wait for the next routine check. Contact a veterinarian immediately if you see them. Follow the instruction to prevent the puppies from suckling when eclampsia is suspected, and do not substitute a home calcium treatment for veterinary care.

When to call the veterinarian

Prompt veterinary guidance is appropriate when the mother’s recovery or a puppy’s feeding and growth concern you. Contact a veterinarian about the following signs:

  • The mother has not resumed eating within 24 hours after the last puppy.
  • Her discharge smells foul or is increasing.
  • She becomes ill, will not allow nursing, or has painful or abnormal mammary glands.
  • A gland is hot, swollen, red or purple, painful, or producing abnormal milk.
  • A puppy is cold, persistently crying, weak, not nursing or failing to gain weight.

Restlessness, excessive panting, stiffness, tremors, weakness, muscle spasms, difficulty standing or seizures in the mother are more urgent: contact a veterinarian immediately because they can indicate eclampsia. If you are unsure whether a sign is an emergency, call and describe it rather than relying on an online checklist to rule out a serious problem.

For a useful call, tell the clinic that the dog has recently given birth, identify the sign that concerns you, and say when it began. For discharge, describe its color, odor and whether it is increasing. For a mammary change, report the affected gland and whether it is hot, swollen, discolored, painful or producing abnormal milk. For a puppy concern, give the puppy’s recorded weights and explain whether it is nursing, weak, cold or crying persistently.

These details do not replace a veterinary examination; they help the veterinarian understand what is happening and advise you on the next step. If the mother has signs of possible eclampsia, make clear that this is an immediate concern. If she or a puppy seems ill and you are uncertain how urgent it is, call rather than trying to rule out a serious problem at home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the care plan individualized

The timing and calorie figures here are general guidance from VCA and the AKC, not individualized instructions or a diagnosis. The mother’s litter size, condition and symptoms matter, and puppies can differ from one another. Ask the veterinarian who knows the dog what diet and feeding amount to use, what weight gain to expect, and what changes should prompt a call for this mother and litter.

The routine is straightforward: keep the nest clean and dry, make the mother’s food and water accessible, observe her recovery, and track each puppy’s nursing and daily weight. Then act on changes rather than assuming they are part of normal recovery. A veterinarian can tailor advice on feeding, expected puppy gain and concerning symptoms to the specific mother and litter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I feed a dog after she has puppies?

VCA Animal Hospitals says a nursing dog can continue food formulated for gestation and lactation or eat an all-life-stages diet. Ask your veterinarian which diet, amount and feeding format—small frequent meals or measured free-choice food—suit her appetite, condition, litter size and stage of lactation.

How much more should a nursing dog eat?

At three to five weeks after whelping, a mother may need two to four times the calories of a normal healthy adult dog. This is a possible peak-lactation need, not a fixed ration for every dog. Needs decline toward normal by about eight weeks as puppies wean; get an individual feeding plan from your veterinarian.

How long can postpartum discharge last, and when should I call?

The American Kennel Club describes lochia as possibly lasting three to eight weeks and varying from green to red or brown. That range is not a guarantee for every dog. Contact a veterinarian promptly if discharge has a foul odor or is increasing, or if the mother seems ill.

How often should I check the mother’s mammary glands and weigh the puppies?

Check the mother’s glands once or twice daily for changes in firmness, swelling, temperature, color, pain or secretion. Weigh each puppy daily, especially during the first week, and ask your veterinarian what gain is appropriate for that breed and litter.

Can I give my nursing dog calcium to prevent eclampsia?

Do not give calcium supplements without veterinary direction. VCA warns that excessive calcium intake during pregnancy or nursing can increase eclampsia risk. Restlessness, excessive panting, stiffness, tremors, weakness, muscle spasms, difficulty standing or seizures warrant immediate veterinary attention; do not try to treat suspected eclampsia at home.

What if a puppy is not nursing or needs extra feeding?

A puppy that is cold, weak, persistently crying, not nursing or failing to gain weight needs veterinary guidance. If supplementation is needed, ask the veterinarian for a plan using an appropriate puppy milk replacer and feeding equipment rather than improvising a product or method.

The Bottom Line

Keep the nest clean and dry, make food and water accessible to the mother, check her appetite, discharge and mammary glands, and weigh each puppy daily. Contact a veterinarian promptly about abnormal discharge, painful or changed glands, a mother who seems ill, or a puppy that is cold, weak, not nursing or not gaining weight. Suspected eclampsia is an emergency: prevent the puppies from suckling and call a veterinarian immediately.
