How to Care for a Dragon Fish Goby (Violet Goby) in a Home Aquarium

Dragon fish gobies are large, peaceful estuarine bottom feeders. This guide explains their adult size, brackish-water setup, sand, diet, compatibility and practical care limits.

A dragon fish goby can thrive in a carefully planned brackish aquarium, but it is not a small community fish that can be kept successfully in any freshwater tank. The species, Gobioides broussonnetii, grows into a long, eel-shaped bottom feeder from muddy estuaries and river mouths. Its apparently predatory mouth is misleading: it normally sifts or feeds from the substrate, eats small foods, and is generally non-aggressive. The main challenges are providing enough adult swimming room, stable mineralized water, a burrow-friendly substrate, and reliable access to food.

The exact aquarium figures below are identified by source. Natural-history records document where the species occurs; a March 2026 specialist care guide supplies the specific home-aquarium targets. Those are useful starting points, not proven universal standards for every specimen.

What is a dragon fish goby?

The violet goby, dragon goby, and dragon fish are common names for Gobioides broussonnetii (Lacepède, 1800). The double-i spelling in broussonnetii is the form used by the Florida Museum profile and FishBase. Some aquarium pages omit the final i, but that spelling is not the one used in those species references.

It has a gray to purple dorsal surface, a paler underside, dark chevron-like markings, a large upturned mouth, and pelvic fins joined together. The body is unusually long and narrow, giving it an eel-like outline even though it is a goby. The Florida Museum describes the fish as capable of burying in mud, an important clue to why a soft bottom matters more than decorative gravel.

Adult size and measurement terms

Plan for a fish measured in tens of centimeters, not a typical 10-centimeter goby. The available sources use different measurement conventions, so their figures should not be treated as identical.

Source Reported figure What the measurement means
Gobioids of the Americas account 470 mm Maximum standard length; the measurement excludes the caudal-fin extension.
FishBase 55.3 cm Maximum total length reported on its field guide page.
Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine, copyright 2020 60 cm Total length.
March 2026 Fish Collection care guide Up to about 60 cm A care-planning figure, not an independent size record.

Because standard length and total length are different measurements, a 470 mm standard-length record cannot be compared directly with a 55.3 or 60 cm total-length figure. Use the largest published total-length estimates when deciding whether your aquarium can accommodate an adult.

Where it lives in nature—and what that means in a tank

The species is associated with muddy bays, estuaries, lagoons, inlets, coastal creeks, large river mouths, and nearby freshwater reaches. FishBase records it from freshwater, brackish, and marine environments, with a cited occurrence salinity range of 0.0 to 25.5 parts per thousand (ppt). The Western Atlantic range extends from South Carolina along the Gulf coast and through the Caribbean to Brazil.

These records describe places where the fish has been found; they do not establish one ideal salinity for every aquarium. A fish may enter low-salinity water near a river mouth while still relying on the chemistry, food supply, and substrate of an estuary for long-term condition. Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine takes the more cautious aquarium position: it says the fish tolerates tropical freshwater, brackish, and marine conditions, identifies a specific gravity of 1.008 as good, and warns that it fares poorly in a freshwater aquarium.

The practical decision is therefore to design around an estuarine, mildly brackish environment unless you have a species-specific reason and reliable monitoring plan to do otherwise. Do not use the 0.0–25.5 ppt occurrence range as a license to make abrupt changes or to assume that permanent freshwater is equally suitable.

Tank size and equipment

The March 2026 Fish Collection guide recommends a minimum of 75 gallons (285 liters). Since the fish may reach roughly 55–60 cm total length, treat that number as a floor rather than a promise that every 75-gallon aquarium will be comfortable. A long aquarium with adequate turning room is more useful than a tall, narrow display. Leave an unobstructed area along the bottom and make sure the fish cannot wedge itself behind equipment.

Core equipment checklist

  • An aquarium of at least 75 gallons/285 liters, with more space preferred for a full-grown specimen or multiple large fish.
  • Filtration sized for the actual aquarium volume and bioload, with intakes guarded so a long-bodied fish cannot be pulled against them.
  • A refractometer or digital salinity meter for repeatable specific-gravity checks.
  • Marine salt mix for preparing replacement water.
  • Fine aquarium sand and at least one secure cave or smooth plastic pipe section.
  • A reliable heater and thermometer capable of maintaining a tropical temperature without rapid swings.
  • Test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and salinity.

Keep cords, heaters, and filter outlets arranged so the goby has shaded resting places but cannot burrow underneath unstable décor. The species is a bottom feeder, so floor area and safe substrate are welfare equipment, not merely decoration.

Water conditions: choose stability over a single magic number

The Fish Collection guide recommends specific gravity 1.005–1.015, temperature 24–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite 0 ppm, and nitrate below 20 ppm. These values come from that dated specialist guide; the natural-history sources do not independently validate every target. Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine separately cites specific gravity 1.008 as a good level.

Parameter March 2026 care-guide recommendation How to interpret it
Specific gravity 1.005–1.015 Brackish target range from the guide; TFH names 1.008 as good.
Temperature 24–28 °C Keep stable within the tropical range rather than chasing daily fluctuations.
pH 7.5–8.5 Measure the aquarium and replacement water before changes.
Ammonia 0 ppm Any detectable result calls for investigation before feeding heavily.
Nitrite 0 ppm Maintain biological filtration and avoid adding livestock to an uncycled system.
Nitrate Below 20 ppm Use water changes and sensible feeding to keep accumulation low.

How to prepare replacement water

  1. Measure the aquarium’s specific gravity before planning a water change.
  2. In a separate, clean container, dissolve the required marine salt mix completely in the replacement water. The care guide specifically says to mix salt before adding the water to the aquarium.
  3. Check the prepared water with a refractometer or digital salinity meter and adjust it before it enters the tank.
  4. Match the replacement water’s salinity and temperature to the aquarium as closely as practical; a sudden change is more stressful than a slow, controlled correction.
  5. Perform the guide’s recommended 25–30% weekly water change, then retest ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and salinity.

Never estimate salinity from the amount of salt alone. Salt concentration depends on the water volume, the product’s formulation, evaporation, and previous water changes. Measure the finished water every time.

Substrate and hiding places

Use 5–8 cm of fine sand, with a grain size of approximately 0.5–2 mm, following the March 2026 guide. Fine sand lets the goby sift and partially bury without the sharp edges or large gaps associated with coarse materials. Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine also recommends soft substrate and lists caves or sections of plastic pipe as hiding options.

Avoid gravel, coarse crushed coral, and a bare bottom. Gravel can interfere with burying and food-sifting behavior; coarse pieces may abrade the mouth or trap uneaten food. Rinse sand until the rinse water is mostly clear, add it before filling the aquarium, and check that caves cannot collapse when the fish digs around them.

What dragon fish gobies eat

Natural diet summaries describe filamentous algae, detritus, and small invertebrates. A cited Amazon study summary also reported phytoplankton genera in stomach contents, although the source does not establish exactly how those items were obtained. The species should therefore not be labeled a strict herbivore or a dedicated predator.

In aquaria, Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine describes it as a sand sifter or filter feeder that needs small foods. The March 2026 guide suggests small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, algae wafers, and gel foods.

Food type Use in a feeding plan Important precaution
Small sinking pellets Convenient staple-sized food that reaches the bottom. Choose pieces the goby can swallow; its large mouth does not prove it needs large food.
Frozen bloodworms Animal-protein option used by aquarists and listed by the care guide. Feed measured portions and remove uneaten food.
Frozen brine shrimp Small frozen food that can be placed near the fish. Do not let faster tankmates take the entire portion first.
Algae wafers Provides a sinking, plant-associated food option. Observe whether the individual actually consumes it.
Gel foods Can be positioned directly on the substrate. Use only enough to avoid fouling the sand.

Target feeding and monitoring

  1. Dim the aquarium or feed at a calm time when the goby is active.
  2. Place small portions on the substrate near the fish rather than dropping everything at the surface.
  3. Watch until you confirm swallowing, not merely investigation. A slow bottom feeder can appear interested while receiving little food.
  4. If other fish arrive first, use a feeding tube, feeding dish, or separated feeding area to deliver food close to the goby.
  5. Remove leftovers and record body condition over time. A hollow abdomen, reduced activity, or consistently untouched food warrants checking competition, water quality, and food size.

Feeding access is a compatibility issue. A peaceful tankmate that eats rapidly can still compromise the goby’s welfare by taking every sinking portion.

Temperament and tankmates

The threatening head shape and upturned mouth do not make this an aggressive fish. Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine states: "Despite its fierce appearance, this is not an aggressive fish, and even very small fish are generally safe with it." The wording matters: “generally safe” is not a guarantee for every individual or mixed aquarium.

The same profile reports conflicting outcomes when conspecifics are kept together. Do not assume that two dragon gobies will automatically share a tank peacefully. If you attempt a group, provide substantial floor area, several separate shelters, and a way to isolate a fish that is being displaced. A single specimen is the more predictable social plan when your aquarium is near the minimum size.

Evaluate tankmates by behavior rather than by appearance. Avoid fish that are highly territorial, habitually nip long fins, or consume all food before it reaches the bottom. Even a non-aggressive goby can be injured or starved in an unsuitable community.

A practical maintenance routine

Every feeding

  • Confirm that the goby takes food from the substrate.
  • Check that no tankmate monopolizes the feeding area.
  • Remove obvious leftovers before they decay.

Weekly

  • Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature, and specific gravity.
  • Change 25–30% of the water with replacement water mixed and measured outside the aquarium.
  • Inspect sand for compacted waste and gently remove debris without stripping away the entire biological surface.
  • Check caves, pipe sections, heater guards, and filter intakes for shifting or blockage.

When a reading is wrong

  • Ammonia or nitrite above zero: pause stocking additions, test the source water, verify filtration, and make carefully matched water changes.
  • Nitrate above the guide’s target: review feeding quantity, detritus accumulation, and the consistency of water changes.
  • Specific gravity drifting: measure evaporation and replacement water separately; do not correct a large difference in one abrupt dose.
  • The goby is not eating: first check whether food reaches it, whether pieces are too large, and whether another fish is taking the portion.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing freshwater because the species has been found there

Freshwater occurrences are real, but they do not prove that a freshwater aquarium is the best lifelong environment. The aquarium guidance cited here recommends brackish water, and TFH specifically warns about poor performance in freshwater aquaria.

Buying for the juvenile body size

A slender young fish can look suitable for a much smaller tank. Plan from the published adult range instead, and remember that a 75-gallon recommendation is a minimum from one care guide, not a guarantee that an adult will be comfortable in every footprint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using coarse substrate or no shelter

Mud-associated, burying behavior is incompatible with treating the bottom as an afterthought. Fine sand and secure hiding places support the behaviors described by museum and aquarium sources.

Assuming the big mouth means large prey

The documented diet and captive recommendations center on small foods. Offer appropriately sized sinking items and verify intake rather than judging food size from head shape.

Quoting a lifespan as settled fact

The March 2026 care guide gives an 8–10 year estimate, but no independently corroborated lifespan statistic was established in the available species sources. Treat that figure as an unverified care-guide claim, not a promise.

Do Dragon Gobies need salt water?

The care-guide answer is yes for long-term keeping: brackish water is recommended, and temporary survival in freshwater should not be confused with thriving indefinitely in freshwater. At the same time, FishBase records the species from 0.0 to 25.5 ppt and from freshwater, brackish, and marine settings. The responsible interpretation is to provide stable, measured brackish conditions rather than making an abrupt switch based on a single number. The March 2026 guide’s 1.005–1.015 specific-gravity range, with TFH’s 1.008 example, gives a practical starting framework.

Is a dragon fish goby right for your aquarium?

Choose this species only if you can support a very large adult bottom fish, maintain measured brackish chemistry, provide deep fine sand, and deliver food directly when necessary. Its calm temperament makes it appealing, but calm does not mean easy: the fish’s unusual size, specialized feeding position, and disputed social outcomes require more planning than its common name suggests.

If your aquarium is already established, has room beyond a juvenile’s needs, and can maintain the guide’s water-quality targets without abrupt fluctuations, a violet goby can be a distinctive centerpiece. If you can provide only a small freshwater community tank, select a different fish rather than trying to force this estuarine species into an unsuitable setup.
