Care for a hairless Xoloitzcuintle’s skin with occasional gentle baths, simple wipe-downs between baths, and sensible protection from strong sun, lawn chemicals, and cold. There is no single bathing schedule or sunscreen rule established for every Xolo; adjust care to your dog’s skin, exposure, and comfort, and contact a veterinarian about changes that persist, worsen, or seem painful.
Why a hairless Xolo’s skin needs thoughtful care
The FCI breed standard describes the hairless variety’s skin as smooth and sensitive, with less natural protection from the sun and elements than a coated dog. It also notes that a Xolo may feel warm to the touch because heat is emitted directly through the skin—not because the dog has a higher body temperature. That sensitivity calls for protection, not constant washing or a complicated product routine. Individual needs vary with the dog and its environment.
How often should you bathe a hairless Xolo?
Bathe your dog occasionally, when it is dirty or needs a wash, rather than scrubbing on a rigid weekly or monthly schedule. The American Kennel Club describes occasional bathing as enough to keep Xolos clean; VCA cautions that over-bathing can strip natural oils and contribute to skin infections. At bath time
- Use a gentle dog shampoo and rinse it off thoroughly.
- Dry the skin gently; avoid abrasive rubbing or scrubbing.
- If you want to moisturize after bathing, choose a dog-appropriate lotion. VCA recommends gentle lotion after a bath, and the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America also mentions moisturizing lotions. Ask your veterinarian before applying a product to irritated or abnormal skin. (Xoloitzcuintli Club of America)
What to do between baths
For ordinary dirt, wipe the skin with a clean, damp washcloth. PetMD also advises keeping the face clean and dry, especially after eating, drinking, or digging in dirt. (PetMD)
A specialty wipe is optional; a washcloth is a simple option supported by that guidance. Avoid turning routine cleaning into repeated full-body washing.

How to handle sun exposure
Favor shade and limit prolonged exposure to strong, direct sun. Guidance on sunscreen for Xolos is not unanimous: AKC says sunscreen is needed with prolonged direct sun, and VCA and PetMD also support sun protection. The Xoloitzcuintli Club of America takes the opposing position, saying a “correct Xoloitzcuintli does NOT need sunscreen, or clothing for protection.” The available guidance does not establish a universal exposure threshold or settle the disagreement with a controlled comparison. Exposure, pigmentation, location, and your individual dog matter. If you are considering sunscreen, ask your veterinarian which dog-specific product is appropriate. Do not use human sunscreen: PetMD warns that some ingredients can be toxic to dogs.

Protect skin from chemicals and cold
VCA notes sensitivity to lawn chemicals, so reduce contact with treated areas and follow product directions before allowing your dog onto a lawn. Avoid abrupt temperature extremes. VCA says Xolos are best suited to warm climates and may need a sweater in cooler temperatures; judge by your dog’s comfort rather than assuming one clothing rule fits every Xolo. Managing adolescent acne
Some young Xolos develop acne as they mature. It may look like bumps, pimples, or blackheads. Keep your dog and its surroundings clean, but do not pick or squeeze the eruptions; the breed club specifically advises against picking them. (Xoloitzcuintli Club of America; PetMD)

Contact a veterinarian if bumps persist, worsen, spread, become painful or scabbed, or look infected. PetMD notes that veterinary treatment may include topical or oral medication. Do not try human acne products or home remedies as treatment.

Seek veterinary advice for persistent, painful, spreading, or otherwise concerning changes rather than trying to diagnose or treat them with more washing or new products. Bring up any moisturizer or sunscreen you are considering, especially if the skin is already irritated. A veterinarian can assess the individual dog and advise whether a product or treatment is suitable.
