How to Care for a Stray Dog With a Matted or Dull Coat

A safe first approach matters more than a quick brush-out. Learn how to assess mats, avoid risky grooming, and recognize when a dull coat needs veterinary attention.

First make sure the dog can be approached and handled safely; grooming can wait. If it is frightened, hurt, or too difficult to contain safely, contact a local animal-control service, shelter, rescue, or veterinarian for help. A few loose tangles may be brushed gently if the dog stays calm, but tight or extensive mats need professional attention. A dull coat may also signal a health problem, so brushing and shampoo are not always the answer.

Start with safety, not grooming

A stray may be frightened or in pain, and a grooming attempt can make a difficult situation worse. Keep your movements calm and do not try to restrain or brush a dog that resists handling, seems injured, or cannot be safely contained. Contact local animal control, a shelter, rescue, or veterinarian for location-specific help. Procedures and available services vary by area.

If the dog is calm enough to assess from a safe distance, look at its general condition before touching its coat. Notice whether it seems alert and able to move normally, and whether you can see wounds, swelling, or other obvious distress. If its condition is concerning, seek veterinary or animal-welfare assistance rather than trying to solve the problem with a bath or brush.

Decide whether the tangles are safe to handle at home

Without pulling on the coat, check whether there are just a few loose tangles or dense clumps close to the skin. Mats can conceal irritated skin, pests, moisture, and wounds. In its 2015 matting guidance, the ASPCA quoted veterinarian Dr. Julie Horton: “Matted hair can lead to severe medical problems for pets:” The ASPCA has also described severe cases in which wounds and moisture-associated skin inflammation were found beneath mats.

What you see What to do When to stop or escalate
A small, loose tangle; the dog is calm; no visible skin problem Try a gentle brush or comb, working without pulling. Stop if the tool catches, the dog reacts, or the skin looks irritated.
Dense, close-to-skin, widespread, painful, or debris-packed mats Have a veterinarian or experienced groomer assess and remove them; clipping may be needed. Seek veterinary care promptly for wounds, swelling, odor, signs of infection, or suspected restriction of circulation.
Dull coat without severe matting Check the dog’s overall condition and seek veterinary advice if the dullness persists. Escalate for itching, hair loss, greasiness, dandruff, odor, pain, or other signs of illness.

For a minor tangle, use a light touch

If the dog remains comfortable and the tangle is genuinely loose, gently brush or comb it out. Do not tug repeatedly or force a comb through resistance. Stop at the first sign of pain, fear, redness, sores, swelling, odor, parasites, or a mat that proves tight or extensive. A slicker brush can be useful for gentle maintenance on a suitable coat, and a metal-tooth comb can help check small tangles; neither is a safe substitute for professional de-matting.

For serious mats, VCA Animal Hospitals’ instruction is direct: “Only use clippers to remove mats — never scissors.” Mats can sit close to the skin, making it easy to cut a dog accidentally. Severe cases may need professional clipping and, sometimes, veterinary sedation.

Do not bathe a dog while mats remain

Address the mats before bathing. VCA warns that tangles can become impossible to remove after a bath. Once matting has been removed and a bath is appropriate, use shampoo formulated for dogs, rinse thoroughly, and keep shampoo and water away from the eyes, ears, and nose. Dog skin differs from human skin, so human shampoo is not a suitable substitute.

A bath should not be used to cover up a persistent odor, itching, or an abnormal-looking coat. Those signs may need a veterinary assessment rather than more washing.

A dull coat can be a health clue

Coat appearance alone cannot diagnose a cause. VCA lists inadequate nutrition or difficulty digesting nutrients among possible reasons for a dry or dull coat. Coat changes or grooming difficulty can also be associated with parasites, allergies, hormone or metabolic problems, digestive disturbances, stress, arthritis, or obesity. These possibilities call for an assessment of the dog, not guesswork based on fur alone.

Arrange veterinary advice if dullness persists or returns quickly after grooming, particularly if it comes with excessive shedding, itching, odor, greasiness, dandruff, patchy hair loss, wounds, or lethargy. The ASPCA’s general dog-care and grooming guidance also emphasizes routine attention to a dog’s health and coat.

The ASPCA reported that “Over 13%” of cruelty cases in the ASPCA-NYPD Partnership involved general hair-matting concerns and/or strangulating hair-mat wounds. That figure comes from data collected by five ASPCA programs in New York City and was reported September 22, 2026; it describes those programs’ cases, not the prevalence of matting among stray dogs or dogs generally.

Set a gentle coat routine after the dog is settled

Once the dog is safe and its health and coat have been assessed, match brushing to its coat type. Long, silky, or curly coats can need daily brushing, while short coats often need less. Ask a veterinarian or groomer to recommend an appropriate brush, especially if you are unsure how the coat should be maintained.
