They sit in moving water and use feathery setae on their feeding appendages to capture fine particles drifting through the water column. A successful aquarium therefore needs a secure, current-facing perch and a reliable way to keep suitably fine food suspended long enough for the shrimp to catch it. Settled food on the substrate cannot, by itself, reproduce their documented feeding mode.
The species is associated with fast-flowing freshwater streams, but exact aquarium tank sizes, flow rates, feeding doses, and water-parameter limits remain insufficiently established in the sources reviewed here. The practical recommendations below distinguish documented biology from reasonable aquarium inferences, so you can design a feeding system without treating unverified numbers as hard rules.

What are bamboo shrimp?
Bamboo shrimp are freshwater fan shrimp identified scientifically as Atyopsis moluccensis. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) ecological review records that taxonomic name as accepted. In the aquarium trade, the same species may be sold as wood shrimp or Singapore flower shrimp. Because common names vary between sellers, the scientific name is the safest way to check an identification.
The FWS review cites records from Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, while also noting that one taxonomic and range assessment placed the reliably established distribution more narrowly in the Greater Sunda Islands. Those accounts are not fully identical, so it is more accurate to describe the range as tropical Southeast Asian freshwater habitats with some published-location uncertainty.

Natural habitat
Reports place the shrimp in fast-flowing hill and mountain streams and similar riparian freshwater systems. They have been described living on rocks or among submerged roots. A field study quoted by the FWS recorded selected water velocities of 20–60 cm/s, water depths of 20–40 cm, and boulder substrate. These are observations of natural habitat, not a pump setting or depth target for a home aquarium.
The stream setting explains why a bare, still aquarium can be a poor match even when its test results look acceptable. In nature, the shrimp can choose a rock or root, face the flow, and shift a short distance to a slower pocket. Recreating that choice is more useful than trying to reproduce a field velocity throughout the entire tank.
How their anatomy works
The first and second pairs of feeding appendages end in long setae, forming the fans that trap suspended particles. In the FWS summary’s wording of an underlying study, “A. moluccensis was regarded as a detritivore, which feeds mainly on drifting detrital particles by filtering from the water column with the cheliped setae.” That description explains why the species behaves differently from shrimp that search the bottom for algae, biofilm, or scraps.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The fans are not simply decorative “hands.” They are the collection surface, so the shrimp often faces into a current with its appendages spread. A shrimp may climb onto a rock, wood, intake guard, or other rough surface that gives it leverage. The useful question is not whether water moves somewhere in the aquarium, but whether edible particles pass through the space occupied by those fans.
What do bamboo shrimp eat?
Bamboo shrimp eat fine material carried through the water column. Their documented feeding mode is filtering drifting detrital particles from moving water, so food that drops quickly to the floor is poorly matched to their anatomy. A current is useful only when it transports edible particles past the shrimp’s fans; strong flow without suspended food is not a feeding plan.
A secondary aquarium profile lists finely powdered shrimp food, baby brine shrimp, phytoplankton, and rotifers as possible suspended foods. Treat these as examples of particle types rather than a guaranteed complete diet or a tested schedule. No authoritative dose, feeding frequency, brand comparison, or complete formulated diet is established by the reviewed material.
Comparing possible food types
| Food example | What to evaluate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Fine powdered shrimp food | Whether it disperses into very small particles and remains in the current long enough to cross the perch. | A product category, not proof of a complete diet or species-specific performance. |
| Baby brine shrimp | Whether the live or prepared particles stay suspended and are carried past the fans. | The profile lists it as an option but supplies no preparation, dose, or schedule. |
| Phytoplankton | Whether circulation distributes the suspension rather than leaving it in a dead spot. | There is no tested concentration or feeding frequency in the reviewed material. |
| Rotifers | Particle size and persistence in the water column. | Again, treat this as an example, not a validated complete diet. |
Compare foods by physical behavior rather than by marketing language. A useful food is fine enough for the fans, stays suspended, reaches the current-facing perch, and can be offered without routinely fouling the aquarium. The shrimp’s actual feeding opportunity matters more than whether a label says “shrimp food.”

How do you feed a filter-feeding shrimp?
- Choose a fine particle source. A fine powdered shrimp food for filter feeders is a relevant category. Other examples reported in the profile include baby brine shrimp, phytoplankton, and rotifers.
- Keep circulation running. Add the food where the aquarium’s directional flow will carry it toward the shrimp’s feeding perch, rather than dropping it into a quiet corner.
- Watch the fans. The shrimp should have an opportunity to extend its feeding appendages into the current. Visible fan-feeding is useful evidence that particles are reaching the animal, but it is not independently validated as a standalone health test.
- Use observation to prevent waste. If particles settle immediately, disperse outside the feeding path, or accumulate on the substrate, the delivery point or particle size is not serving the intended purpose. Adjust the delivery method instead of automatically adding more food.
- Protect water quality. Because no tested dose is available, avoid treating a package instruction or a guessed quantity as species-specific proof. Increase food only when you can observe that the shrimp are not receiving suspended particles and the aquarium remains stable.
There is no evidence here for a universal daily or weekly amount. Aquarium volume, circulation, the number of shrimp, background plankton, and the food’s particle size all change how much remains available in suspension. A measured feeding routine should be developed from observation and water-quality results, not copied as a fixed number.
Do not confuse a shrimp that grabs a sinking pellet with proof that pellets alone meet its needs. An opportunistic bite can occur, but the documented specialization is filtering drifting material. Likewise, a cloudy tank is not automatically a well-fed tank: suspended waste can damage water quality without providing suitably sized nutrition.
Do bamboo shrimp need a strong current?
They need access to moving water, but “strong” is not a useful aquarium specification by itself. In streams, bamboo shrimp hold position on coarse surfaces while drifting food passes by. The FWS review describes a balance between food availability and the energetic cost of maintaining position in current. Coarse rocks can also create lower-velocity refuges beside faster water.
The aquarium implication is a directional feeding lane: place a stable perch in a current path, with nearby shelter where the shrimp can rest. This is an inference from field ecology, not a layout tested in an aquarium experiment. Avoid blasting every part of the tank uniformly. A shrimp that cannot hold its position, is repeatedly swept away, or has no calm refuge is not benefiting from the design.

A practical flow layout
- Use a rock, branch, or other stable structure that gives the shrimp a firm foothold.
- Position that structure where circulation carries fine particles across the fans.
- Leave a slower area immediately beside or behind the feeding perch for recovery and shelter.
- Check the actual path of suspended particles; the outlet’s direction matters more than a pump’s advertised maximum flow.
- Do not interpret a visible current as proof that food is available. Food must remain suspended and pass within reach of the fans.
- Secure lightweight decor so the shrimp cannot be dislodged by the outlet or trapped against an intake.
A useful test is to add a harmless, easily removed fine suspension and watch where it travels. If it drops before reaching the perch, redirect the outlet or move the perch. If it races past too quickly for the shrimp to hold position, create a rough obstruction or lower-velocity edge rather than eliminating circulation altogether.
What tank conditions does a bamboo shrimp need?
Exact aquarium thresholds are not firmly established by the strongest source reviewed. The FWS ecological assessment describes habitat and feeding biology but does not provide a complete aquarium parameter range. A secondary profile suggests the values below, but its listed references are Wikipedia and Seriously Fish, so use them as provisional starting points rather than definitive limits.
| Parameter | Provisional figure from the secondary profile | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum aquarium volume | 80 L | A suggested minimum, not an independently verified species threshold. |
| Temperature | 23–28 °C | A suggested range requiring stronger specialist confirmation before being treated as a hard limit. |
| pH | 6.8–7.8 | A provisional range, not a documented tolerance boundary in the FWS review. |
| General hardness (GH) | 6–14 °dGH | A provisional profile value; stability and suitable mineral balance still matter. |
| Carbonate hardness (KH) | 3–8 °dKH | A provisional profile value rather than a proven requirement. |
The most defensible approach is to provide stable, mature freshwater conditions, avoid abrupt changes, and verify any exact target against a specialist husbandry reference before treating it as mandatory. The reviewed evidence does not establish a current, independently verified tank-size minimum or water-parameter threshold.

Build the aquarium around feeding access
- Establish stable freshwater first. Confirm that temperature, pH, hardness, and alkalinity remain steady rather than chasing a single number.
- Add coarse structure. Rocks, wood, or roots can provide the attachment points and nearby shelter suggested by the species’ stream habitat.
- Create one observable current path. Arrange circulation so that suspended particles cross a perch, while another area offers lower flow.
- Test with harmless suspended material. Observe whether the flow carries particles to the perch or drops them before they reach it. This checks the layout without assuming that pump specifications predict the real path.
- Introduce food conservatively. Add fine particles into the feeding lane and monitor both fan-feeding and water quality before refining the routine.
An 80-liter figure from the secondary profile should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every smaller or larger aquarium will succeed. In any proposed setup, leave room for the adult shrimp to reach a perch, retreat from the flow, and feed without constant competition. A larger volume can also dilute feeding mistakes, but it does not compensate for absent suspended food or unstable conditions.

Behavior is most useful when interpreted alongside the physical setup. A shrimp repeatedly positioned on a perch with its fans extended has access to the behavior’s required feeding posture. A shrimp that cannot hold position, is always hiding outside the current, or is exposed to particles that settle before reaching it may need a better flow path or perch.
Fan extension alone does not prove that the animal is receiving enough nutrition. Check whether food actually passes the fans, whether the shrimp can move between current and refuge, and whether uneaten material is accumulating. The source material does not provide a validated visual health score, growth schedule, or body-condition test.
Common setup problems
- Food settles immediately: use a finer particle or deliver it closer to the current that crosses the perch.
- The shrimp is swept from the structure: reduce the force at the perch or provide a more secure, rough surface while retaining a nearby feeding lane.
- There is flow but no feeding: inspect whether particles actually travel through the shrimp’s reach; circulation elsewhere in the tank does not solve a misplaced feeding path.
- Food accumulates on the bottom: reduce the amount, improve suspension, and remove excess before it degrades water quality.
- The tank has no refuge: add a sheltered area beside the faster flow so the shrimp can leave the feeding lane without being exposed in open water.
- A filter intake creates a hazard: guard the intake and confirm that the shrimp can approach the current without being pulled against equipment.
- Tankmates intercept the food: observe the feeding lane after stocking changes and reposition delivery if other animals consume the suspension first.
Can bamboo shrimp live with other aquarium animals?
The reviewed official source does not provide a detailed compatibility matrix. The secondary profile calls the species peaceful and advises avoiding aggressive animals, but that advice is not independently substantiated in the material available here. Treat compatibility as a risk assessment rather than a list of guaranteed combinations.
Before adding tankmates, consider three practical questions:
- Could the animal prey on, injure, or continually harass a slow-moving shrimp?
- Will tankmates consume suspended food before it reaches the bamboo shrimp?
- Can the shrimp still reach its current-facing perch and retreat to shelter?
These questions are more useful than labeling an entire fish or invertebrate group universally safe. Observe feeding access after every stocking change, because competition can arise even when direct aggression is absent. A peaceful animal can still make the setup unsuitable if it occupies the perch, strips suspended food from the water, or prevents the shrimp from moving between flow and refuge.
Can bamboo shrimp breed in freshwater?
Adults live in freshwater, but their larvae require brackish water for successful development according to the FWS synthesis. That difference is fundamental: maintaining adult shrimp in freshwater is not the same as completing the larval life cycle there.

The reviewed source does not provide the salinity, larval duration, food, water movement, or freshwater-transition steps needed for a home breeding protocol. Do not assume that adding aquarium salt to an adult community tank will produce viable young. A serious breeding attempt requires a separate, documented larval method supported by specialist evidence.
In practical terms, an adult carrying eggs is not proof that the aquarium can raise juveniles. The larvae’s different water requirement makes breeding a specialized project rather than an incidental outcome of ordinary freshwater care. Keep adult conditions stable and do not alter salinity experimentally without a complete, species-specific protocol.

How large do bamboo shrimp get?
Published size figures conflict. The FWS review quotes an Aquatic Arts source giving an average adult size of 2–3 inches (5–7.6 cm), while another trade source reproduced in the same review gives 8–12 cm. Because these figures come from different trade references and may reflect identification or measurement differences, they should not be used as a precise maximum. Plan for a substantial adult shrimp rather than assuming the smallest juvenile size will remain permanent.
Size uncertainty is another reason to use the scientific name when buying and to leave adequate access to a perch. A seller’s juvenile measurement does not settle the adult-size question, and common names may cover more than one trade presentation.
Trade and conservation context
The 2017 FWS assessment reported A. moluccensis in the United States aquarium trade and found no documented history of introduction outside its native range as of that review. Its overall risk to the contiguous United States was classified as uncertain, with a low climate match and low certainty of assessment. The climate-matching analysis reported a Climate 6 score of 0.0 for the contiguous United States.
Those are dated ecological-risk findings, not a statement of current legal status, current market availability, or present-day collection practices. They do not establish that the species is legal everywhere or that contemporary specimens are necessarily wild-caught. Check local rules and seller information separately when acquiring shrimp, and never release aquarium animals or water into natural waterways.
Evidence-based takeaways
- Atyopsis moluccensis is a filter-feeding freshwater shrimp, and scientific-name identification avoids confusion among trade names.
- Its fans capture drifting particles from the water column; food that simply settles cannot be the sole feeding strategy.
- A current-facing perch plus a nearby refuge reflects the species’ stream ecology, but the exact aquarium layout is an informed inference rather than a tested formula.
- Fine powdered foods, baby brine shrimp, phytoplankton, and rotifers are possible suspended-food examples, not a proven complete diet or dose.
- Adults are freshwater animals, while successful larval development requires brackish water.
- Exact tank, water, flow, and sourcing recommendations need stronger or newer species-specific evidence before they are presented as universal rules.

Do bamboo shrimp need a strong current?
They need access to moving water that carries food past their fans, but a uniform blast is not the goal. Provide a directional current over a secure perch and a nearby lower-flow refuge. Field velocities of 20–60 cm/s describe natural streams, not a home-aquarium pump setting.
How do you feed a filter-feeding shrimp?
Use fine particles, add them where circulation carries them across the shrimp’s perch, and observe whether the fans encounter the suspension. If food settles immediately or accumulates on the substrate, adjust particle size or delivery rather than simply adding more.
What tank conditions does a bamboo shrimp need?
Stable freshwater, coarse attachment surfaces, a current-facing feeding lane, and nearby shelter are the best-supported design principles. A secondary profile lists 80 L, 23–28 °C, pH 6.8–7.8, GH 6–14 dGH, and KH 3–8 dKH, but these figures remain provisional rather than proven species thresholds.

Can bamboo shrimp breed in freshwater?
Adults live in freshwater, but the FWS synthesis states that free-living larvae require brackish water for successful development. The reviewed material does not provide the salinity, duration, feeding, or transition steps for a home breeding protocol.
Are bamboo shrimp peaceful with tankmates?
A secondary profile describes them as peaceful, but the official review does not provide a compatibility matrix. Assess every tankmate for predation, harassment, competition for suspended food, and blocked access to the feeding perch.
How big do bamboo shrimp become?
Published figures conflict: one trade source quoted by the FWS gives an average of 2–3 inches (5–7.6 cm), while another gives 8–12 cm. Treat them as substantial adult shrimp and do not rely on a juvenile measurement as a precise adult maximum.
The Bottom Line
Bamboo shrimp succeed when the aquarium treats them as stream-dwelling filter feeders: provide stable freshwater, a rough current-facing perch, a nearby refuge, and fine food that truly remains suspended across their fans. Do not mistake visible flow, sinking food, or fan extension alone for proof of adequate nutrition. Adult care is freshwater, but larval development requires brackish water, and exact numerical tank and water targets remain provisional until supported by stronger species-specific husbandry evidence.
