If a chip is found, use its number in the American Animal Hospital Association’s (AAHA) Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool to identify registries that may have the owner’s details. The number itself does not reveal who owns the dog, and the lookup tool does not disclose private contact information.
What to do first when you find a dog
Keep the dog safe and contact a nearby veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or animal-control office for help scanning it. These are the organizations the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends contacting to scan a found animal. Call first when possible: availability, hours, fees, and appointment requirements depend on the location.

Ask whether the facility can perform a complete scan with a universal scanner. AVMA recommends a complete scan using a universal scanner to help ensure a chip is found. A phone, visual inspection, or the dog’s appearance cannot provide the registry-linked chip number. You need a scanner and a person or organization able to perform the scan.

Why a complete scan matters
The goal is to find a microchip and obtain its number, not to identify the owner from the dog’s appearance or from a partial number. Scanner access and the process for a found dog vary locally, so a clinic, shelter, or animal-control office can explain what it can do and what local steps apply.

How to look up the microchip number
- Get the number from the person or organization that scanned the dog. Ask them to write it down clearly. AAHA’s lookup instructions accept 9-, 10-, or 15-digit numbers.
- Enter the number in the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool. Type the digits without spaces or punctuation. Check the number against the scanner’s readout before submitting it.
- Review the registry results. The tool checks participating recovery registries and identifies registries to contact. It may return more than one potential registry, ordered by the most recent registration update.
- Contact the registry the tool identifies. The registry—not the public lookup—is the next route to the registrant’s contact information. If the tool lists multiple potential registries, AAHA advises working through them as needed.
The AAHA lookup is primarily for microchips distributed in the United States. AAHA says a 15-digit pet microchip is the international standard, but U.S. readers may encounter chips from multiple companies, scanner frequencies, and registration databases. If you are outside the United States, use the local recovery registry and animal-care authorities rather than assuming the AAHA tool covers the relevant registry.
What the lookup does—and does not—tell you
A microchip number is an identifier, not an owner’s phone number. The AAHA tool searches participating registries to indicate where a record may be held; it does not display the private contact details stored in those registries. As the American Animal Hospital Association’s FAQ explains: “While the tool will not return the pet owner information contained in the registries’ databases, it will identify which registries should be contacted when a lost pet is scanned and a microchip is found.”

That separation is why the lookup is a routing step rather than a way to contact the owner directly. Once you know which registry may have a record, follow that registry’s contact process. The cited guidance does not establish a single response time or contact method that applies to every registry.
What to do if the tool finds no registry record
If the lookup does not find a participating registry record, its result may default to the chip’s manufacturer or distributor. Follow the result and ask the manufacturer or distributor what next step is available. A manufacturer result is not the same as an owner record, and it does not guarantee that the owner’s contact details will be available there.

Also involve local animal-control or shelter services. There is no single fallback procedure established for every registry or locality. Ask the local authority what found-animal process applies, including any stray-hold requirements. Those requirements depend on where the dog was found, so do not assume one area’s procedure applies elsewhere.

The dog has no chip, or the scan finds nothing
A scan that finds no chip does not provide a number to look up. Ask the clinic, shelter, or animal-control office what local options are available for a found dog. The cited guidance recommends a complete scan with a universal scanner to help ensure the chip is found; if you are unsure whether a complete scan was performed, ask the facility.

The number is rejected
Check that the number contains only digits, with no spaces or punctuation, and that it is 9, 10, or 15 digits long. If the entry still does not work, verify the number from the scan readout with the person or organization that scanned the dog before trying again.
The tool lists more than one registry
Contact the potential registries identified by the lookup as needed. The results are ordered by the most recent registration update, but a result is not confirmation that a registry currently has usable owner contact information.

The tool points to a manufacturer or distributor
Use the manufacturer or distributor named in the result as the next contact, and ask local animal-control or shelter services for help with the found-dog process. The available guidance does not define one universal procedure after a manufacturer result.
You cannot find a place to scan the dog
Call a nearby veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or animal-control office to ask about scanning access and any local requirements. Hours, fees, and appointment policies are local details, so confirm them directly rather than relying on a general assumption.
What to expect from local services
Clinics, shelters, and animal-control offices are the practical starting points for scanning, but their access rules are not the same everywhere. Before going, ask whether they can scan a found dog, when scanning is available, whether an appointment is needed, and whether a fee applies. If a chip is found, ask for the number and confirm which registry or animal-control steps they recommend next.

Local found-animal rules are separate from the chip lookup. The AAHA tool identifies potential registries; it does not determine what a finder must do under local requirements. Animal control or a shelter can direct you to the appropriate local process, including any applicable stray-hold rules.
Quick Recap
Key facts to keep straight
- A scanner is required to obtain the chip number; a phone or visual check cannot retrieve it.
- The chip number identifies a record route, not the owner’s identity or phone number.
- AAHA’s lookup identifies participating registries that may hold a record, but does not reveal private contact details.
- Enter a 9-, 10-, or 15-digit number without spaces or punctuation.
- If there is no participating registry record, the tool may point to the chip’s manufacturer or distributor.
- AAHA’s tool primarily serves chips distributed in the United States; readers elsewhere should use local registries and animal-care authorities.
