Why Dogs Carry, Cuddle, or “Nurse” Their Toys

Dogs may carry, cuddle, or suckle toys for different reasons. Learn how to distinguish ordinary toy use from possible pseudopregnancy, guarding, or distress.

A dog that carries a toy from room to room, curls up beside a stuffed animal, or suckles on a plush toy is not necessarily showing a problem. These behaviors can be ordinary ways of using a toy, but toy mothering can also occur with pseudopregnancy (false pregnancy), especially when it follows a heat cycle and comes with other changes. The toy behavior alone cannot tell you which explanation applies. What the dog does, when it started, and whether there are signs such as guarding, distress, or physical changes matter more than the toy itself.

What does it mean when a dog carries or cuddles a toy?

Start with what you can see: a dog may pick up a toy and carry it around, sleep beside it, curl around it, lick or mouth it, or seek it out during quiet periods. Those are different actions, even if people describe all of them as “mothering” or “nursing.” A carrying toy or comfort toy is a useful way to describe a toy’s role; it does not, by itself, reveal a dog’s motive.

There is no established single explanation for why every dog carries or cuddles a toy. For one dog, carrying may simply be part of play or how that dog chooses to use an object. Another may settle near a familiar toy. Calling that self-soothing, affection, maternal instinct, or anxiety as a certainty goes beyond what the behavior alone can show. A Humane Society of Boulder Valley behavior handout recognizes carrying and comfort toys as categories, but it is practical guidance rather than a clinical study of why an individual dog chooses a particular toy.

So if you ask, “Why does my dog carry her toy everywhere?” the most accurate answer is that the carrying is observable, but its cause cannot be read from that action alone. Consider the setting: does it happen during play, at rest, after a change in routine, or alongside other new behaviors? Those details help you decide whether it is simply a familiar toy habit or part of a wider change worth discussing with a veterinarian.

Why is my dog nursing or suckling a toy?

“Nursing” is an owner’s description, not a veterinary diagnosis. Describe the action as precisely as you can: is the dog suckling, licking, chewing, mouthing, carrying the toy, or curling up with it? Note whether the behavior is new, how often it happens, whether your dog can be redirected without distress, and whether there are physical changes or guarding. These observations are more useful than assuming that suckling has one universal emotional or medical cause.

The sources available do not establish one explanation for toy-suckling behavior in all dogs. A dog may use a toy in a way that looks like suckling without that action alone proving false pregnancy, distress, or a compulsive problem. At the same time, a new pattern deserves more attention if it occurs with a recent heat cycle, other behavioral or physical changes, or a strong reaction when someone approaches the toy.

Try not to turn one behavior into a diagnosis. Instead, record what happens and what else has changed. If you contact your veterinarian, a short description of the action, when it began, its frequency, and any reproductive or physical context will help explain the concern.

When can toy mothering point to pseudopregnancy?

Pseudopregnancy, also called false pregnancy, can occur after estrus (a heat cycle) in an unspayed dog that is not pregnant. Veterinary sources describe both behavioral and physical signs. Possible behaviors include nesting, mothering toys or other small objects, and guarding those objects; protective aggression can occur in some cases. Toy mothering is therefore relevant when it appears after heat, but it is not enough on its own to establish pseudopregnancy.

VCA Animal Hospitals describes maternal behavior and physical signs following heat, including possible guarding of toys. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine lists mothering toys, nesting, and possible aggression among signs of canine pseudopregnancy. The Merck Veterinary Manual also discusses nesting and protective aggression toward objects such as toys in this context. A 2019 peer-reviewed review, “Maternal behaviour in domestic dogs,” covers maternal behavior and pseudopregnancy-related mothering of inanimate objects; it also notes that some potential links involving nesting have not been studied. Taken together, these sources support treating toy mothering as one possible part of a wider pattern—not proof of a particular instinct or emotional cause.

Look at reproductive context and the whole picture rather than focusing on the plush toy:

  • Toy use without other changes: Carrying, cuddling, or suckling without distress, guarding, or other notable changes does not by itself indicate pseudopregnancy.
  • Toy mothering after heat: If an unspayed dog begins treating a toy like a puppy after estrus, particularly alongside other behavioral or physical changes, contact a veterinarian to discuss whether pseudopregnancy or another issue should be assessed.
  • Possible mating: If mating may have occurred, VCA advises veterinary assessment. Do not assume that apparent mothering means the dog is or is not pregnant.
  • Guarding or a safety concern: If your dog protects the object or the behavior puts a person or another pet at risk, avoid provoking the situation and seek individualized professional advice.

A veterinarian can assess the dog’s health and consider possible pregnancy; the toy behavior is only one piece of that assessment. The reviewed sources do not establish a prevalence figure that would tell an owner how likely pseudopregnancy is based on toy behavior alone.

How should you respond to guarding or distress?

A dog guarding a toy is a practical safety concern, not evidence that the dog has a “bad temperament.” Do not test the dog by reaching for the toy, cornering the dog, or provoking a reaction. Avoid having children or other pets approach the object, and give the dog space while you arrange appropriate advice. Veterinary Partner (VIN), in its guidance on resource guarding, recommends professional help for guarding concerns.

If the guarding creates a risk, ask your veterinarian for guidance or seek help from a qualified behavior professional. The veterinary sources cited here do not provide a complete step-by-step behavior treatment plan, so a generic online exercise is not a substitute for advice tailored to the dog and the situation. If the behavior appeared after heat or alongside physical changes, mention that context when you contact the veterinarian.

For a dog that uses a toy without distress or guarding, there is no need to remove a harmless comfort or carrying toy just because its role looks unusual. You can offer a variety of toys, including one suited to carrying or quiet comfort, as category-level behavior guidance suggests. Match the toy’s size and construction to your dog’s chewing habits, and supervise as appropriate. Those are common-sense safety considerations, not evidence that any plush toy prevents anxiety, treats pseudopregnancy, or resolves guarding.

How can you tell which situation fits?

What you observe What it may mean Useful next step
Your dog carries or cuddles a toy, with no obvious distress, guarding, or other changes. This may be an ordinary way of using a carrying or comfort toy. The behavior alone does not establish a particular motive. Observe the pattern. Offer suitable toys if your dog enjoys them, and use ordinary supervision appropriate to the dog’s chewing habits.
An unspayed dog begins mothering or nesting around toys after estrus, especially with other behavioral or physical changes. Pseudopregnancy is one possibility, but the toy behavior cannot confirm it. Contact a veterinarian to discuss the timing and other signs. Seek assessment if mating may have occurred.
Your dog protects the toy, becomes distressed, or the behavior creates a safety concern. Guarding or distress changes how safely people and pets can respond, regardless of the cause. Do not provoke or snatch the toy. Keep others from approaching and consult a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.

It may help to keep a brief record: the action you see; when it began; how often it happens; whether the dog settles or becomes upset; whether anyone can safely approach; and whether the dog is unspayed, recently had a heat cycle, may have mated, or has other physical changes. A veterinarian can use those details to determine what needs assessment. This record is not a diagnostic checklist, and no single item on it proves pseudopregnancy.

What not to assume about a comfort toy

A toy can be part of a dog’s ordinary play or comfort routine without having a medically established effect. The behavior handout’s recognition of carrying and comfort toys does not demonstrate that a particular plush toy treats distress, pseudopregnancy, or compulsive behavior. No specific product or toy model has been established as clinically effective for these concerns.

Likewise, the fact that toy mothering is listed among possible pseudopregnancy signs does not mean every dog with a “baby” toy is experiencing a false pregnancy. The connection matters most when the behavior fits the dog’s reproductive context and appears with other changes. If you are unsure whether the pattern is harmless or part of a health or safety concern, a veterinarian is the appropriate person to assess it.

When to contact a veterinarian

Arrange veterinary advice when toy mothering follows heat and is accompanied by other behavioral or physical changes, when mating may have occurred, or when you are concerned about your dog’s health. Ask for help with guarding if it puts people or other animals at risk. You do not need to wait until a dog has a dramatic reaction to raise a new or worrying pattern with a professional.

When describing the concern, distinguish what you saw from what you suspect. For example: “She has been carrying and suckling one toy since her heat cycle, and she now guards it when another dog comes close.” That gives a professional the behavior, timing, and safety context without treating “nursing” as a diagnosis.
