Tiny orange-red dots on your dog may be chiggers, also called harvest mites, but their appearance and the itching they cause are not enough to confirm the diagnosis. Gently wipe away visible mites, avoid rubbing alcohol and other unapproved remedies, and contact your veterinarian if the itching is intense or persistent, the skin is damaged, or you are unsure what is causing it.
What could the orange mites on your dog be?
Chiggers are the larval stage of Trombiculidae mites. They can look like tiny orange-red specks that stay in place, often clustered around a dog’s ears, head, feet, or belly. Merck Veterinary Manual describes the larvae as approximately 0.25 mm long and attached, engorged orange-red mites as approximately 0.7 mm; these are reference measurements, not a way to diagnose an individual dog. Chiggers attach at the skin surface, feed for a few days, then detach. As Merck puts it, “The larvae attach to the host, feed for a few days, and leave when engorged.” The skin may continue to itch after the mites have gone, so lingering irritation does not necessarily mean mites are still present. Orange specks and itching do not prove that chiggers are the cause. Allergies and other skin disorders can also make a dog itch. A veterinarian can examine the affected skin and may use a superficial skin scraping to help identify the problem.

What to do right now
- Look without scrubbing. Check the visible skin, especially around the head, ears, feet, and belly. Do not rub the eyes or put anything into the ear canal.
- Gently remove visible specks. Use a soft cloth or a veterinarian-recommended skin wipe, particularly around sensitive areas. This may remove visible mites; it is not established as a cure or as a way to stop the skin reaction. PetMD: Chiggers on Dogs
- Do not use rubbing alcohol. It does not kill chiggers and can cause burning, pain, and discomfort. Ask your veterinarian before applying home remedies or medication. VCA Animal Hospitals: Harvest Mite Infestations in Dogs
- Contact your veterinarian if symptoms warrant it. Get advice if the itching is severe or persistent, the cause is uncertain, or you see sores, bleeding, hair loss, crusts, or signs of a skin infection.
How a veterinarian may diagnose and treat chiggers
Because several conditions can cause similar itching, treatment should follow an examination rather than the color of the specks alone. Your veterinarian may inspect the skin and take a superficial scraping. Explain when the itching started, where your dog has been outdoors, and whether the problem has happened before.
Veterinary management may include an appropriate acaricidal or insecticidal treatment and, when needed, care for severe itch or a secondary infection. Merck names fipronil and permethrin as medications that may be used in dogs, but that does not mean every product containing either ingredient is suitable for every dog. The right product, use, and safety precautions depend on veterinary advice and the product label; treatments for chiggers may differ from those used for other mites. Can your dog give chiggers to people or other pets?
VCA explains that people acquire harvest mites from infested outdoor environments, not by catching them from a dog. That distinction applies to harvest mites; it should not be generalized to other mites. Merck describes canine trombiculosis as noncontagious. If your dog has itchy orange specks, avoid assuming that every itchy household member or pet has caught the same condition; an appropriate diagnosis matters.

How to reduce the chance of another exposure
Chiggers are picked up outdoors. When possible, keep your dog away from areas known to be infested, including tall grass, weeds, wooded areas, leaf litter, and mulch during local risk periods.
