Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a dog bike trailer by checking your dog’s standing length, seated height, and weight against the manufacturer’s pet limits and the trailer’s interior dimensions. Then confirm that its coupler fits your bicycle and that the entry, restraint, ventilation, weather protection, wheels, and folded size suit your rides. A high weight limit alone does not mean your dog will fit comfortably.
How do I measure my dog for a bike trailer?
- Measure length while your dog is standing. Burley’s method is to measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail.
- Measure height while your dog is sitting. Measure from the ground to the top of the head.
- Compare both measurements with the model’s limits and interior dimensions. Check the manufacturer’s stated maximum pet length and height as well as the usable cabin space.
- Check your dog’s weight against the capacity. Treat weight as one requirement, not a substitute for checking room to sit and settle.
These measurement instructions come from Burley’s pet trailer comparison. Its figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent fit tests.
Will my dog fit in a bike trailer?
Use all three checks—length, height, and weight—rather than choosing by weight rating alone. The following Burley specifications were retrieved October 4, 2026; check the current model page and manual before buying, as specifications can change.
| Model | Maximum pet weight | Maximum pet length | Maximum pet height | Interior dimensions | Folded dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tail Wagon | 75 lb | 29 in | 23 in | 32.5 × 17.3 × 21.1 in | 35.5 × 25.8 × 11 in |
| Bark Ranger | 75 lb | 29 in | 23 in | 36.2 × 16.7 × 24.2 in | 36.5 × 23.8 × 11.5 in |
| Bark Ranger XL | 100 lb | 33 in | 34 in | 36.2 × 22.4 × 29.9 in | 36.5 × 28 × 12.8 in |
Burley does not state in this comparison that meeting the maximum measurements guarantees a comfortable fit for every dog. Consider your dog’s posture and ability to settle, and use the stated limits and cabin dimensions together.

What else should I compare?
Bike-only riding or stroller conversion
Burley describes the Tail Wagon as bike-only, while the Bark Ranger models are dog stroller and bike trailers. If you plan to walk your dog after riding, verify that the exact model includes or supports the stroller hardware you need; Burley lists a two-wheel stroller kit among Bark Ranger XL accessories.
Entry, ventilation, and cleaning
Burley lists a 9-inch step-up for the models in its comparison. Schwinn’s Rascal Plus has a rear entry door and a removable, washable non-slip liner, features that may matter if your dog struggles with a higher opening or you expect muddy rides. Schwinn also lists a bug screen for airflow. A bug screen is not a rain cover, so check what weather protection is included and which accessories fit the model.

Restraint design
Do not assume a trailer has an internal leash attachment. Burley says it does not include internal leash attachment points in its pet trailers; Schwinn lists an adjustable interior leash on the Rascal Plus. Check the exact model’s manual for its restraint instructions and use the trailer only as directed.
Weather, terrain, and wheels
Burley says the Tail Wagon has no integrated rain cover and no rain-cover accessory available; its comparison lists a rain cover among Bark Ranger accessories. Burley also lists a 16+ wheel kit for sand, snow, and gravel for the current Tail Wagon, and 20-inch wheels for the Bark Ranger models. This is manufacturer accessory guidance, not a guarantee that every surface or trail is suitable.

Folded storage and carrying weight
Compare folded dimensions with your vehicle’s cargo area and storage space. Trailer weight also matters if you will need to lift it. Burley publishes folded dimensions and trailer weights for the compared models. Schwinn lists the Rascal Plus at 32.2 lb and 31.8 × 26.4 × 32.2 in on its product page.
Will the trailer fit my bicycle?
Check the trailer manual and confirm that the supplied coupler—or a manufacturer-approved adapter—works with your bicycle’s rear axle and dropout. Give particular attention to e-bikes and thru-axle configurations. Schwinn describes the Rascal Plus coupler as fitting “most adult bicycles,” but that wording is not a compatibility guarantee for every bike. The manufacturer information cited here does not provide a complete bicycle and axle compatibility matrix.

How should I introduce my dog to riding?
Schwinn recommends starting with shorter trips so a dog can adjust. Its guide suggests gradually adding 5–10 minutes, bringing water and a bowl, adding a familiar blanket, and using treats to make the experience positive. It notes that a dog’s behavior in a car can be a rough indication of how it may respond in a trailer, but dogs differ. These are manufacturer suggestions, not veterinary advice or a guarantee that a dog will adapt.
Schwinn also recommends a maximum speed of 10 mph or less when using a trailer or child carrier. This is Schwinn’s guidance, not a universal legal limit. Follow the trailer and bicycle manuals and local rules.
