Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWash a dog bite promptly with soap and running water, then cover a minor wound with a clean bandage. Apply firm pressure with a clean, dry cloth if it is bleeding. Get emergency help for bleeding that will not stop, a large or deep wound, severe injury, or feeling faint or weak. Any bite that may have exposed you to rabies needs urgent professional advice, even if the dog is reportedly vaccinated.
What should I do immediately after a dog bite?
- Move to safety. Separate yourself from the dog without risking another injury. If the person is seriously hurt, call your local emergency number.
- Control bleeding. Press a clean, dry cloth firmly over the wound. Seek emergency care if bleeding will not stop.
- Wash the wound. Rinse thoroughly with soap and running water as soon as possible. If the animal may have rabies, the World Health Organization advises washing for at least 15 minutes and seeking medical attention without delay (WHO rabies guidance).
- Cover a minor wound. After washing, apply antibiotic cream if appropriate and cover it with a clean bandage. A basic first-aid kit can provide clean dressings, but it is not a substitute for assessment of a deep or serious bite.
- Arrange medical advice when indicated. Do not wait for symptoms if the wound is deep, the bite may pose a rabies risk, or another warning sign below applies.
When is a dog bite an emergency?
Call your local emergency services or go to emergency care for uncontrolled bleeding, a large or deep wound, a severe injury, or if the injured person feels faint or weak. In the United States, CDC advises calling 911 or local emergency services in these circumstances; in the UK, NHS guidance is to go to A&E for a large or deep wound or bleeding that cannot be stopped. Use the emergency pathway for your location.
When should I get prompt medical advice?
Seek prompt clinical advice for a deep puncture, torn or crushed skin, a bite to the hand, foot, face, or head, material that may be lodged in the wound, or concern about tetanus vaccination. Also contact a clinician if the dog’s rabies vaccination status is unknown or you are unsure whether the exposure could transmit rabies. These factors may need assessment even when the wound does not look severe.
Get medical review if infection may be developing. Warning signs include increasing redness or other skin-color change, warmth, swelling, worsening pain, fluid or pus, a bad smell, or fever. NHS and Mayo Clinic also advise clinical assessment for concerning bite wounds (NHS animal and human bites; Mayo Clinic first aid guidance).

Do I need a rabies shot after a dog bite?
Not every dog bite requires rabies post-exposure treatment. The decision depends on the animal, the nature of the exposure, and rabies risk where the bite occurred. Wash the wound immediately and contact a clinician or local public-health authority urgently if rabies exposure is possible. Public-health officials can conduct or support the risk assessment; a reported vaccination status by itself should not be treated as a decision about whether you need care.
WHO describes post-exposure prophylaxis as wound washing and a course of human rabies vaccine, with rabies immunoglobulin or monoclonal antibodies when indicated. The exact regimen and whether treatment is needed require professional assessment. See the CDC post-exposure prophylaxis guidance and CDC clinical overview of rabies. Rabies protocols and care pathways vary by location, so follow local public-health advice.

WHO’s 17 September 2026 rabies fact sheet says dog bites and scratches cause 99% of human rabies cases globally and that 40% of rabies cases are in children under 15. Those global figures describe rabies worldwide; they do not estimate the chance that a particular dog bite will cause infection.
Could I need a tetanus shot or antibiotics?
Tetanus vaccination needs depend on wound type and your vaccination history. CDC’s dog-bite guidance says to seek care if more than five years have passed since your last tetanus shot. WHO says vaccination is indicated when a person is not adequately vaccinated. A clinician can assess the wound and your vaccination record; see WHO animal-bite guidance.

Do not start antibiotics as a one-size-fits-all home treatment. A clinician may prescribe them; WHO identifies high-risk wounds and people with immune deficiency as situations where preventive antibiotics may be considered. Whether a wound should be closed also depends on clinical assessment.

Keep the wound clean and watch for the infection signs described above. Seek medical review if they appear or worsen. If rabies exposure is a possibility, do not wait to see whether symptoms develop: contact a clinician or public-health authority urgently after washing the wound.
