Can cats have bone broth?
Some cats can have a cat-appropriate broth as a small supplement. A broth’s name alone does not establish that it is safe or nutritionally complete. Read the full ingredient list and the feeding directions, and keep fresh water and a complete, balanced diet as the foundation of feeding. Cornell’s feeding guidance says cats should have access to clean, fresh water at all times.

Broth may add flavor and moisture, and could encourage some cats to eat, but evidence about bone broth specifically in cats is limited. It is unclear whether the small amounts cats consume provide a substantial nutritional boost; it should not be presented as a treatment for dehydration, kidney disease, poor appetite, or another illness. Jennifer Coates, DVM, discusses these limits in her veterinarian-authored guide, updated June 29, 2026.
What to check before choosing a cat bone broth
- Made for cats: Prefer a product with explicit feline feeding directions. Do not assume a broth made for people or another animal is suitable.
- Full ingredient list: Reject products containing onion or garlic, and avoid unsafe seasonings. “Bone broth” on the front label does not tell you everything in the recipe.
- Sodium and calories: Review both on the package, especially if your cat has a health condition or a prescribed diet. The sources do not establish one sodium limit that applies to every cat.
- Supplement or complete food: Many broth products are toppers or complements, not meals. If you intend to use a product as food, look for a complete-and-balanced nutritional statement.
- Serving directions: Use the current package’s directions for that product and your cat’s life stage. Serving amounts are not interchangeable between products.
- Medical fit: Ask your veterinarian before adding broth if your cat has kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, food sensitivities, or other dietary restrictions.
Cornell notes that cats eating a complete and balanced diet generally do not need supplements, and supplements can be harmful if given without veterinary approval. It also advises that treats remain within 10–15% of a cat’s daily caloric intake; that is general treat guidance, not a broth-specific allowance. See Cornell’s nutrition guidance.

How to serve broth safely
- Check the package. Confirm the product is intended for cats, read the ingredient list, and identify whether it is supplemental or complete and balanced.
- Follow its feline directions. Use the serving limit on that product’s current package; do not transfer a suggested amount from a different broth or species.
- Offer it as a topper if it is supplemental. Pour it over your cat’s usual balanced wet or dry food only as directed. Do not replace meals or fresh water with broth.
- Watch your cat’s response. If your cat seems unwell or has a persistent appetite or hydration concern, contact a veterinarian rather than relying on broth.
A cat-specific product example, not a “best” winner
Purina’s product sheet describes Purina Beyond Mixers+ Chicken Bone Broth for Cats with Immune Support as a food complement with chicken bone broth and added vitamins, intended to be poured over balanced dry or wet cat food. The undated manufacturer sheet says it is for supplemental feeding only, lists 1.45 kcal per pouch, and gives a suggested maximum of one pouch daily for an adult cat. These details apply to that product, not to broth generally; check the current package for directions. The sheet does not establish a clinical immune benefit or show that this product is better than alternatives: manufacturer product sheet.
Broth toppers, powders, and wet foods containing broth are different formats, not evidence-backed rankings. For any of them, verify the current label, intended species, feeding directions, and nutritional-completeness statement. A wet food containing bone broth may serve as a meal only if its label says it is complete and balanced.

Why there is no universal best
The available guidance does not establish a universally best cat bone broth or a clinical benefit demonstrated by head-to-head product trials. The practical choice is therefore the product whose ingredients, feline directions, calories, and supplemental or complete-food status fit your cat. For a cat with a medical condition or special diet, make that choice with your veterinarian.
