Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a charity run based on what you can do now, how much time you have to prepare, and whether the event’s route and fundraising terms work for you—not its prestige. If you’re new to running, a shorter family event or 5K is a sensible place to start. Build up gradually, and check the organizer’s rules and the charity’s terms before you register.
Which distance is a realistic starting point?
Start with your current activity level and the time available before the event. Ask whether you can comfortably walk or run for roughly the time you expect to be on the course, and whether you can follow a gradual training plan with rest days.
- New to running: Consider a shorter family run or a 5K. The Christie Charity identifies both as options for people starting out, while JustGiving describes 5K and 10K as beginner distances.
- Already running regularly: A 10K may be worth considering if its date and route fit your current routine.
- Considering a half marathon or marathon: Look at these only if you already have a running base and enough time for a longer training plan. The existence of a training plan does not establish that you are personally ready for the distance.
Distance alone does not determine difficulty. A short, hilly trail can feel very different from a flat road event of the same length, so compare the actual route as well as the kilometre total.
How much training time should you allow?
The free NHS Couch to 5K plan is one gradual starting framework for beginners. It schedules three runs a week with rest days, begins with one-minute running intervals alternating with 90-second walks, and increases the running over time. The NHS says the plan can take nine weeks or longer, depending on your pace; its 5K endpoint is a programme goal, not a guarantee that every runner will be ready for every event or route.

- Is your entry a general place or a charity place?
- Is there a minimum fundraising target, and when must you meet it?
- What happens if you fall short of the target?
- What are the entry fee, cancellation, and transfer terms?
- Can you fundraise for the charity if you already secured your own place?
For example, Help for Heroes says it has no charity places available for the listed marathon fundraising option, but runners with their own ballot place can register to fundraise. That is an example of event-specific terms, not a rule that applies to other charities or races. Check the organizer’s current registration information and the charity’s current guidance before committing.
JustGiving describes a common fundraising sequence: find and register for an event, create a fundraising page for a charity, train, share the page, and collect donations. The event organizer’s registration process and fees are separate, so verify them on the event’s own page. If a fixed race date, travel, or fundraising target does not suit you, JustGiving says you can create a challenge and choose its distance, date, location, target, and charity.

What do you need to prepare and stay safe?
The NHS recommends comfortable clothing and running shoes that support your feet. You do not need special accessories to begin; a phone armband is optional if you use audio guidance and your clothing has no pocket.
For route planning, check a map and stay aware of traffic and other people using the route. If you listen to audio, remain aware of your surroundings. When running in darkness, make sure you can see and be seen. The NHS also notes that running with a friend or group can make runs safer and more enjoyable.
