Start by assessing how your dog behaves around other dogs, then ask a rescue for specific information about a candidate and arrange a planned meet-and-greet when possible. Compatibility is individual, and a promising first meeting cannot guarantee that two dogs will live well together.
First decide whether your dog is ready for a housemate
Notice how your dog behaves around other dogs in ordinary settings. Does your dog approach voluntarily, stay relatively relaxed, and disengage when ready? Or do you see fear, persistent tension, or aggression? A second dog is not a reliable treatment for those problems and may increase pressure or create a safety risk. The American Kennel Club advises against getting another dog to solve the resident dog’s fearfulness or aggression (AKC guidance on getting a second dog).
Also consider what daily life would require: separate attention, care, training, and, at least initially, safe separation. The added costs and practical responsibilities matter as much as whether your dog seems sociable. If you cannot manage the dogs separately when needed, wait rather than relying on them to work things out.
Ask the rescue about the individual dog
A label such as “good with dogs” does not tell you how a candidate will behave with your dog, in your home, or around valued items. Ask staff for concrete observations and what is known versus unknown. The AKC’s questions for rescue and shelter staff can help guide the conversation.

- Has the dog lived with other dogs? What do staff observe around dogs of different sizes or play styles?
- Are there known concerns such as guarding food, toys, or people; separation anxiety; or a bite history?
- What training or cues does the dog know? What health or care needs should you plan for?
- What support is available after adoption, and what happens if the placement is not working?
Rescue records and observations may be incomplete. Ask staff to distinguish direct observations from reports or unknown history, and consider their knowledge of the candidate rather than treating a short meeting as a definitive test.
Compare candidates against your dog and household
If you are considering more than one dog, ask the same questions about each. Compare the actual dogs rather than relying on breed or sex as a shortcut.

| What to compare | Why it matters | What to ask or observe |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort around dogs | A candidate’s behavior with other dogs is relevant, but does not guarantee a fit with yours. | Ask what staff have observed, including the setting and the other dogs involved. |
| Energy and play style | A mismatch can make ordinary activity and shared space harder to manage. | Compare exercise needs, intensity of play, and whether each dog can settle or disengage. |
| Age and tolerance | A dog that wants frequent energetic play may overwhelm a dog that prefers rest or space. | Ask how each dog responds to activity and to another dog ending an interaction. |
| Size and physical safety | A large size difference can make rough play or accidental collisions riskier. | Consider the dogs’ size, play style, and ability to interact safely under supervision. |
| Guarding and other behavior concerns | Food, toys, or people can become sources of tension. | Ask about known guarding, bite history, and management needs. |
| Health, care, and household routine | Different care needs and schedules affect what your household can sustain. | Ask about health needs and assess whether you can provide separate care, training, and downtime. |
Similar energy levels can make companionship easier, as dog trainer Kathy Santo told the AKC: “Dogs with similar energy levels make the best companions.” That is a useful consideration, not a guarantee. The available guidance does not establish a universally best breed or sex pairing; observed behavior and the fit with your household are more useful than stereotypes.
Arrange a controlled meet-and-greet
If the rescue permits it, ask staff how to conduct a meeting and whether your resident dog should come. Treat the meeting as one piece of information: behavior in a shelter or other unfamiliar setting may not predict behavior at home, and stress can affect what a dog shows.

- Choose neutral ground. Meet outdoors in a place neither dog treats as home or territory, with two capable adult handlers.
- Begin at a comfortable distance. Keep both dogs on controlled, loose leashes and walk in the same direction. Give them enough room to remain calm.
- Watch before allowing an approach. Let the dogs move closer only while both remain relaxed. Avoid tight leash pressure and prolonged, intense face-to-face greetings; redirect their attention periodically.
- Pause if either dog shows discomfort. Stiff posture, hard staring, lip lifting, growling, snapping, or attempts to retreat are reasons to create distance. Allow a dog that wants space to have it.
- End safely or seek help. Try again later only if both dogs can settle. If there is a serious aggression history or the handlers cannot manage the meeting safely, ask the rescue and a qualified behavior professional for an individualized plan instead of attempting an uncontrolled introduction. See the AKC’s guide to introducing dogs to new roommates and guide to introducing a new dog to your current dog.
Set up the home for gradual adjustment
Before the new dog arrives, put away bowls, chews, toys, and other items that could prompt guarding. Prepare a crate, exercise pen, gate, or separate rooms so each dog can take a break without being approached. Feed them separately, supervise early interactions, and protect the resident dog’s one-on-one time and routine.
- Keep interactions supervised. Do not leave the dogs together unattended until their behavior has been consistently safe and relaxed.
- Use barriers or separate rooms to provide space and breaks; a barrier or leash supports management but does not replace supervision.
- Do not force proximity or punish warning signals. Separate the dogs calmly if tension appears.
Let behavior set the pace. Adjustment may take days, weeks, or months; there is no universal deadline. If tension repeats, escalates, or is difficult to interpret, consult a qualified professional. If the dogs remain a poor fit, use the rescue’s support or return policy. Best Friends Animal Society also offers practical guidance on what to know about getting a second dog.

What the survey figure does—and does not—show
The AKC reports that, in the American Pet Products Association’s 2021–2022 survey, 56 percent of respondents gave having a companion for their dog as a reason for getting a second dog. This is a reported reason among surveyed respondents, not evidence that every resident dog benefits from another dog. The AKC also discusses the practical costs in its guide to whether you can afford a second dog.
