To keep a white dog’s coat clean and tangle-free, brush with a tool suited to its coat, bathe with dog-specific products only as needed, and dry it thoroughly after bathing or getting wet. White fur can show discoloration caused by moisture and naturally occurring pigments, so grooming can help manage surface buildup—but it cannot guarantee permanently white fur. The right routine depends on whether your dog has a short smooth, dense double, or long silky coat.
Why white fur turns pink, brown, or yellow
Light-colored fur makes stains easier to see. The American Kennel Club explains that porphyrins—compounds associated with the breakdown of red blood cells—are present in tears, saliva, urine, and feces. They contain iron and can discolor fur, particularly where it stays damp, such as around the eyes and mouth, on the paws, or near the rear. As AKC Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Jerry Klein puts it, “Porphyrins are naturally excreted in tears, saliva, urine, and feces, and they contain iron.” AKC: Why Does My Dog’s Fur Turn Pink or Brown?
Moisture and residue can contribute to visible buildup, but the color alone does not reveal its cause. Allergies, eye or skin irritation, anatomy, infection, and other issues may be involved. Don’t respond to new or heavy staining by scrubbing harder or applying stronger products; look for other symptoms and seek veterinary advice when they are present.
Adjust brushing to your dog’s coat
Brush before bathing so you can find and work through loose hair and tangles while the coat is dry. Choose a brush or comb that reaches through the coat without scraping the skin, and use gentle strokes down to the skin rather than smoothing only the surface. A slicker brush can help remove mats, but no one brush is right for every coat. Check behind the ears and under the legs regularly, along with other friction points and places that collect moisture or debris. AKC: Dog Grooming Tips

Short, smooth coat
Use a gentle brush suited to short hair and check the skin as you go. This coat is less likely to form dense tangles than a long coat, but dirt and dampness can still collect around the face, paws, and other contact areas. Pay attention to your dog’s comfort; repeated hard strokes do not make a coat cleaner.
Dense double coat
Choose a tool that can work through the dense coat without scratching the skin. Separate the hair in sections and check that you are reaching beneath the topcoat, especially in areas where friction or moisture encourages tangles. Be patient rather than forcing a brush through resistance.

Long, silky coat
Long hair can tangle where it rubs or stays damp. Work in small sections with a coat-appropriate brush or comb, checking behind the ears and under the legs. If a tight mat will not loosen gently, stop: pulling can hurt, and extensive matting is better handled by a professional groomer.
Bathe as needed, not to chase a whiter color
Use dog-specific grooming products selected for your dog’s coat and skin, and bathe according to the individual dog’s needs and lifestyle. There is no single bathing interval that fits every white dog. Frequent bathing can strip natural oils and leave the skin and coat dry or brittle, while a whitening label is not proof that a shampoo will prevent yellowing or stop stains from returning. The available guidance does not establish a universal whitening product or schedule. Rinse thoroughly so residue does not remain in the coat. Dry the coat completely
After a bath, swimming, rain, or a damp walk, towel-dry carefully and make sure the coat is thoroughly dry. A damp coat can tangle and mat; AKC also notes that drying helps limit bacterial growth. If you use a dryer, choose one made for a dog’s sensitive skin and coat. Keep hot air away from the skin and stop if your dog shows distress. AKC: How to Dry a Dog
Clean the face and paws gently
For routine eye-area hygiene, wipe gently with a soft, clean, damp cloth and keep hair from irritating the eye. Don’t put unapproved cleaners, powders, peroxide, or stain removers in or near the eye. Keep paws clean and dry after wet walks, and check the hair between and around the toes for dampness or debris. A veterinarian quoted in AKC grooming guidance, Lori Stephens, DVM, notes: “Porphyrins contain iron and are excreted in tears, saliva, urine, and feces.” AKC: Expert Tips on Grooming Feet, Eyes, and Ears

Tear stains that keep returning may reflect an underlying issue rather than a need for a stronger cosmetic cleaner. Don’t use antibiotic or medicated eye products as stain removers; AKC warns that some tear-stain products contain antibiotics not indicated for dogs or cats and notes FDA action concerning products containing tylosin tartrate. Ask your veterinarian before using products intended to treat the eye area.

Arrange veterinary advice for sudden or heavy staining, especially if it comes with redness, swelling, unusual discharge, odor, squinting, rubbing, itching, or signs of discomfort. Persistent licking or a marked change in color also deserves attention. These signs can point to a cause that grooming alone will not address; appearance cannot diagnose it. Avoid trying increasingly aggressive cleaning while waiting for an assessment. AKC: Why Does My Dog’s Fur Turn Pink or Brown? and AKC: How to Prevent Tear Stains on Dogs
